Abstract (data abstract)
THE FOLLOWING COMMENTS ARE TAKEN FROM THE PI N COMPILATION OF R.L. KELLY. THEY ARE THAT COMPILATION& apos;S COMPLETE SET OF COMMENTS FOR PAPERS RELATED TO THE SAME EXPERIMENT (DESIGNATED BUSSEY73) AS THE CURRENT PAPER. (THE IDENTIFIER PRECEDING THE REFERENCE AND COMMENT FOR EACH PAPER IS FOR CROSS-REFERENCING WITHIN THESE COMMENTS ONLY AND DOES NOT NECESSARILY AGREE WITH THE SHORT CODE USED ELSEWHERE IN THE PRESENT COMPILATION.) /// CARTER71 [A. BUSSEY,NP B58,363(1973)] -- PI+/- P DCS AT 9/10 MOMENTA BETWEEN 180/188 AND 408 MEV/C. DONE AT CERN SC USING MAINLY PION AND PROTON COUNTER ARRAYS IN COINCIDENCE AND ALSO A SINGLE ARM PION SPECTROMETER AT SEVERAL ANGLES AT EACH ENERGY. THE DATA ARE GIVEN IN COULOMB-CORRECTED FORM,AND WE HAVE ADDED BACK COULOMB CORRECTIONS CALCULATED IN THE SAME WAY AS THOSE OF BUSSEY73 IN ORDER TO RECONSTRUCT THE PHYSICAL CROSS SECTIONS. WE USED THE COULOMB AMPLITUDES OF ROPER,WRIGHT, AND FELD,PR 138,B190(1965) WITH DIPOLE FORM FACTORS, (1-T/(.77 GEV)**2)**(-2), FOR BOTH THE PION AND PROTON. THE NUCLEAR AMPLITUDES USED FOR THE COULOMB-NUCLEAR INTERFERENCE TERM WERE CALCULATED FROM THE PHASE SHIFTS OF CARTER73. THE ACTUAL COULOMB CORRECTIONS USED BY BUSSEY73 ARE TABULATED WITH THE CROSS SECTIONS IN THAT PAPER,AND IT IS STATED THAT SINCE THE CORRECTIONS ARE AVERAGES OVER FINITE ANGULAR ACCEPTANCES THE PHYSICAL CROSS SECTIONS CAN NOT BE RECONSTRUCTED BY ADDING THE CORRECTIONS TO THE CORRECTED CROSS SECTIONS. THIS IS MISLEADING BECAUSE,FIRST,THE SIGN IS SUCH THAT ONE WOULD SUBTRACT THE TABULATED CORRECTIONS FROM THE TABULATED CROSS SECTIONS TO ESTIMATE THE PHYSICAL CROSS SECTIONS, AND,SECOND,THESE ESTIMATES DIFFER LITTLE FROM OUR MORE ELABORATE RECONSTRUCTION. AT WIDE ANGLES THERE IS ESSENTIALLY NO DIFFERENCE,AND EVEN AT THE MOST FORWARD ANGLES THE DIFFERENCE IS NOWHERE STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT. /// CARTER73A [J. R.
