The analysis uses a data sample of proton-proton collisions accumulated by the CMS experiment in 2011, 2012, and 2016, with center-of-mass energies (integrated luminosities) of 7 TeV (5 fb$^{-1}$), 8 TeV (20 fb$^{-1}$), and 13 TeV (36 fb$^{-1}$). The branching fractions are determined by measuring efficiency-corrected event yields relative to ${\\rm B^+}\\to{\\rm J}/\\psi {\\rm K^+}$ decays (with ${\\rm J}/\\psi\\to\\mu^+\\mu^-$), which results in the cancellation of many of the systematic uncertainties. The decay ${\\rm B_s^0}\\to\\mu^+\\mu^-$ is observed with a branching fraction of ${\\cal B}({\\rm B_s^0}\\to\\mu^+\\mu^-) = {[2.9^{+0.7}_{-0.6}\\,(\\text{exp})\\pm{0.2}\\,(\\text{frag})]\\times10^{-9}}$, where frag refers to the uncertainty in the ratio $f_s/f_u$ of the ${\\rm B_s^0}$ and the ${\\rm B^+}$ fragmentation functions, corresponding to a significance of 5.6 standard deviations. No significant excess is observed for the decay ${\\rm B^0}\\to\\mu^+\\mu^-$, and the upper limit ${\\cal B}({\\rm B^0}\\to\\mu^+\\mu^-) < {3.6\\times10^{-10}}$ is obtained at $95\\%$ confidence level. These measured branching fractions are consistent with standard model predictions, and they supersede previous results from CMS based on the 2011 and 2012 data only. Finally, the ${\\rm B_s^0}\\to\\mu^+\\mu^-$ effective lifetime is measured, for the first time in CMS, and is found to be $\\tau_{\\mu^+\\mu^-} = {1.70^{+0.61}_{-0.44}}$ ps.","hasPart":[{"@id":"https://doi.org/10.17182/hepdata.92349.v1/t1","@type":"Dataset","description":"Branching fraction upper limit for $B^{0}\\rightarrow \\mu^{+}\\mu^{-}$","name":"Table 1"},{"@id":"https://doi.org/10.17182/hepdata.92349.v1/t2","@type":"Dataset","description":"Summary of the systematic uncertainty sources.","name":"Table 2"},{"@id":"https://doi.org/10.17182/hepdata.92349.v1/t3","@type":"Dataset","description":"Summary of the fitted yields for $B_{s}^{0}\\rightarrow \\mu^{+}\\mu^{-}$ for all 14 categories of the 3D UML branching fraction fit.","name":"Table 3A"},{"@id":"https://doi.org/10.17182/hepdata.92349.v1/t4","@type":"Dataset","description":"Summary of the fitted yields for $B^{0}\\rightarrow \\mu^{+}\\mu^{-}$ for all 14 categories of the 3D UML branching fraction fit.","name":"Table 3B"},{"@id":"https://doi.org/10.17182/hepdata.92349.v1/t5","@type":"Dataset","description":"Summary of the fitted yields for the combinatorial background for 5.2$<$$m_{\\mu^{+}\\mu^{-}}$$<$5.45 GeV for all 14 categories of the 3D UML...","name":"Table 3C"},{"@id":"https://doi.org/10.17182/hepdata.92349.v1/t6","@type":"Dataset","description":"Summary of the fitted yields for the $B^{+}\\rightarrow J/\\psi K^{+}$ normalization for all 14 categories of the 3D UML branching...","name":"Table 3D"},{"@id":"https://doi.org/10.17182/hepdata.92349.v1/t7","@type":"Dataset","description":"Summary of the average $p_{T}$ of the $B_{s}^{0}\\rightarrow \\mu^{+}\\mu^{-}$ signal for all 14 categories of the 3D UML branching fraction...","name":"Table 3E"},{"@id":"https://doi.org/10.17182/hepdata.92349.v1/t8","@type":"Dataset","description":"Summary of the ratio of efficiencies between the normalization and the signal for all 14 categories of the 3D UML...","name":"Table 3F"},{"@id":"https://doi.org/10.17182/hepdata.92349.v1/t9","@type":"Dataset","description":"Result of the branching fraction for $B_{s}^{0}\\rightarrow \\mu^{+}\\mu^{-}$, $B^{0}\\rightarrow \\mu^{+}\\mu^{-}$.","name":"Table 4"},{"@id":"https://doi.org/10.17182/hepdata.92349.v1/t10","@type":"Dataset","description":"Summary of the effective lifetime of $B_{s}^{0}$ meson for $B_{s}^{0}\\rightarrow \\mu^{+}\\mu^{-}$.","name":"Table 5"},{"@id":"https://doi.org/10.17182/hepdata.92349.v1/t11","@type":"Dataset","description":"1 sigma contour from figure 6 (left)","name":"Table 6A"},{"@id":"https://doi.org/10.17182/hepdata.92349.v1/t12","@type":"Dataset","description":"2 sigma contour from figure 6 (left)","name":"Table 6B"}],"identifier":[{"@type":"PropertyValue","propertyID":"HEPDataRecord","value":"https://www.hepdata.net/record/ins1748024?version=1"},{"@type":"PropertyValue","propertyID":"HEPDataRecordAlt","value":"https://www.hepdata.net/record/92349"}],"inLanguage":"en","name":"Measurement of properties of Bs0 to mu+mu- decays and search for\nB0 to mu+mu- with the CMS experiment","provider":{"@type":"Organization","name":"HEPData"},"publisher":{"@type":"Organization","name":"HEPData"},"url":"https://www.hepdata.net/record/ins1748024?version=1","version":1}
