Abstract (data abstract)
CERN-LHC. Measurement of the leptonic and inclusive hadronic branching fractions of the W boson based on proton-proton collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb^-1. Events characterized by the production of one or two W bosons are selected and categorized based on the multiplicity and flavor of reconstructed leptons, the number of jets, and the number of jets identified as originating from the hadronization of b quarks. A binned maximum likelihood estimate of the W boson branching fractions is performed simultaneously in each event category. Based on the hadronic branching fraction, several other standard model quantities are derived including the value of the strong coupling constant at the W boson mass, the sum over elements in the first two rows of the CKM matrix , and the value of |V_cs|. Analysis categories defined by the leptonic composition, jet multiplicity, and number of b tags are defined as: - Include one electron with pt > 30 GeV or one muon with pt > 25 GeV that has fired the trigger used to collect the data - Lepton categories are defined as having (Table 1 of preprint): - one additional electron with pt > 20 GeV (ee or emu) - one additional muon with pt > 10 GeV (emu or mumu) - one hadronic tau with pt > 20 GeV (etau_h or mutau_h) - at least four hadronic jets with pt > 30 GeV (eh or muh) - For ee and mumu categories, veto events where the dilepton invariant mass is within 15 GeV of the Z boson mass - Leptonic categories are split according to the number of hadronic jets and the number of b tags (Table 1 of preprint): - ee and mumu categories require at least two jets and number of b tags (=1, >=2) - emu categories require the number of jets (=0, =1, >=2) and the number of b tags (=0, =1, >=2) - etau_h and mutau_h categories require the number of jets (=0, =1, =2, >=3) and the number of b tags (=0, =1, >=2) - eh and muh categories require the number of jets be at least 4 and the number of b tags (=1, >=2)
