Multi - Hadronic Events at E(c.m.) = 29-GeV and Predictions of QCD Models from E(c.m.) = 29-GeV to E(c.m.) = 93-GeV

Phys.Rev. D37 (1988) 1, 1988

Abstract (data abstract)
SLAC-PEP. Multihadronic e+ e- annihilation events studied by Mark-II Collaboration. Data in this part are the average of the (PEP5) Mark-II and the Upgrade Mark-II detectors. The second and third lists for each table the data for the individual experiments respectively. Properties of the events are studied in both global event shape and inclusive charged particle distributions. For calculating event shapes and axes all changed and neutral particles are used. Comparisons are made in the paper with predictions of QCD models. SLAC-PEP. Multihadrinic e+ e- annihilation events studied by Mark-II Collaboration. Data given in this part are from the Upgrade Mark-II experiment. Properties of the events are studied in both global event shape and inclusive charged particle distributions. For calculating event shapes and axes all charged and neutral particles are used. Comparisons are made in the paper with predictions of QCD models. VARIOUS COLLECTIVE VARIABLES ARE USED IN PAPER. ALL CHARGED AND NEUTRALS PARTICLES WERE USED FOR CALCULATING THEM.Q1, Q2, Q3 ARE EIGENVALUES OF THE SPHERICITY TENSOR (Q1<Q2<Q3, Q1+Q2+Q3=1). THE SPHERICITY AXIS IS THE DIRECTION OF THIRD PRINCIPAL AXIS OF MOMENTUM ELLIPSOID. EVENT PLANE IS DEFINED BY FIRST AND SECOND PRINCIPAL AXES. APLANARITY IS DEFINED AS 3/2*Q1, SPHERICITY AS 3/2(Q1+Q2), QX VARIABLE AS (Q3-Q2)/SQRT(3). THRUST IS DEFINED AS MAX((SUM OF ABS(PL))/(SUM OF ABS(P))), WHERE SUM IS MADE OVER ALL PARTICLES INVOLVED AND PL IS THE LONGITUDINAL MOMENTUM OF PARTICLE RELATIVE TO THE THRUST AXIS,, WHICH IS CHOSEN SUCH AS TO MAXIMIZE SUM OF ABS(PL). THE AXIS WITH THE GREATEST THRUST VALUE PERPENDICULAR TO THE THRUST AXIS IS DEFINED TO BE THE MAJOR AXIS, AND THE THRUST ALONG THIS AXIS IS THE MAJOR VALUE. THE MINOR AXIS APPEND THRUST AND MAJOR AXIS TO ORTHOGONAL SYSTEM AND MINOR VALUE CORRESPONDS TO THIS AXIS. THE OBLATNESS IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MAJOR AND MINOR VALUES. TO DEFINE JET MASS AUTHORS USED DEFINITION BY CLAVELI AND WYLER (PL 103B, 383). THE EVENT IS DIVIDED INTO TWO HEMISPHERES BY THE PLANE PERPENDICULAR TO SPHERICITY AXIS AND THE INVARIANT MASS OF PARTICLES IN EACH HEMISPHERES IS CALCULATED. THE SMALLER MASS IS DEFINED AS MSL, THE MASS OF SLIM JET, AND THE OTHER MBR, THE MASS OF BROAD JET. THE QUANTITIES OF INTEREST ARE MBR**2/S, MSL**2/S AND (MBR**2-MSL**2)/S. MEASUREMENTS OF THE INCLUSIVE DISTRIBUTIONS OF CHARGED PARTICLES ARE GIVEN IN XL=2*P/SQRT(S) AND PT(WITH RESPECT TO SPHERICITY AXIS), PTIN AND PTOUT( THE TRANSVERSE MOMENTA IN AND OUT EVENT PLANE), THE RAPIDITY Y WITH RESPECT TO THRUST AXIS, THE CHARGED PARTICLE FLOW, D(N)/D(THETA), WHERE THETA IS THE ANGLE BETWEEN THE PARTICLE AND THE SPHERICITY AXIS. THE ENERGY FLOW D(E)/D(THETA) IS DEFINED AS D(N)/D(THETA), WEIGHTED BY THE ENERGIES OF CHARGED AND NEUTRAL PARTICLES. CR.=DATA OBTAINED USING MARK-II (PEP 5) AND MARK-II UPGRADED FOR SLC. RESULTS QUOTED ARE AVERAGES OVER BOTH DETECTORS.
