Inclusive production of D*+- mesons in photon photon collisions at s**(1/2)(ee) = 183-GeV and 189-GeV and a first measurement of F2(c)(gamma).

Abstract (data abstract)
CERN-LEP. Measurement of the inclusive production of D*+- mesons in photon-photon collisions measured using E+ E- interactions at centre-of-mass energies 183 and 189 GeV. The 183 (189) GeV data were collected during the 1997 (1998) running period and have an integrated luminosity of 55 (165) pb-1. The differentialdistributions in PT and ETARAP are presented in the PT range 2 to 12 GeV and ET ARAP range -1.5 to 1.5. The total cross section for charm quark pair production is given together with the first measurement of the charm structure function F2(C=CHARM) of the photon in the kinematic range in X from 0.0014 to 0.87 and Q**2 from 5 to 100 GeV**2.
