We have measured the differential cross sections and Λ polarizations in the reactions π−p→ΛK0 and π−p→ΛK*0 (890) near the backward direction, at 3, 4, 5, and 6 GeV/c. Data equal to several times the world's total sample above 2 GeV/c were recorded. Both reactions are characterized by cross sections falling rapidly with beam momentum, and by large positive Λ polarizations for u′ between 0.0 and 0.6 GeV2. Analysis of π−p→ΛK0 yields an effective Regge trajectory consistent with antishrinkage of the backward peak. Separation into amplitudes of definite-parity-naturality exchange shows the reaction to be dominated by unnatural-parity exchange. The energy behavior of this exchange is, however, not consistent with a single linear baryon Regge trajectory or exchange-degenerate pair of trajectories. An apparent normalization discrepancy between data on π−p→ΛK0 of a CERN-ETH group and other high-statistics data including that of this experiment is discussed.

Evidence is presented for production of Ξ* resonances, decaying into Ξπ, Ξ(1530)π, ΛK¯, and ΣK¯, in K−p interactions at 2.87 Gev/c. The data represent final combined results from a 30-events/μb hydrogen exposure and an 18-events/μb exposure in deuterium designed to study Ξ* production in the mass interval 1.46-2.07 GeV/c2. In addition to Ξ(1820) and Ξ(1940), signals have been observed at masses of 1630 MeV/c2 and 1860 MeV/c2 decaying into Ξ−π+ and YK¯, respectively. Reaction cross sections have been measured for all final states containing two visible signs of strangeness, and for the final states ΛK−K+ and Σ0K−K+.

We have measured the polarization parameter for proton-proton elastic scattering at p0 = 6 GeV/c for |t|<0.5 (GeV/c)2 using the polarized proton beam at the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron. These data, together with all previous measurements in this t region, are well fitted by the empirical relation P = (0.481±0.010)(−t)12exp(2.291±0.085)t.

Cross sections are presented for all final states without strange-particle production. Contributions to single-pion production are found from (i) Δ(1238)π, (ii) ρ+p, (iii) nucleon diffractive dissociation into Nπ, (iv) N*(1688)π+, and (v) "phase space." The angular distribution of the inclusive reaction 4 He + p → 3 He + X was measured with 6.85 GeV/ c incident alphas. At large angles, the observed kinematics corresponds to the elastic scattering on the target proton of an 3 He present in the incoming 4 He, the remaining neutron being a spectator. This shows the presence of an important component of 3 He in 4 He. The integrated cross section for 3 He production is σ 3He = 24.1 ± 1.9 mb.

The results on total channel cross-sections obtained in the 2 m HBC exposed to a separated K− beam at the CERN PS are presented here. The total cross-sections for each channel are given at seven incident K− momenta between 1.934 and 2.516 GeV/c.

Differential cross sections for elastic K + p scattering have been measured at nineteen momenta between 0.7 and 1.9 GeV/ c . The data represent between 10 thousand and 20 thousand elastic events at each momentum and cover a wide range of scattering angles ( −0.98 ≲ cos θ ∗ ≲ 0.95 ). A computer controlled system of scintillation counters and acoustic spark chambers was used to detect the elastic events. Various internal consistency checks indicate that the absolute normalization of the data is accurate to within 2–3%. The cross sections show a smooth transition from an isotropic angular distribution to a dominant forward peak over the range covered by the experiment. Phase-shift analyses including these results show little evidence for a direct-channel resonance, and fitting the results by t - and u -channel exchange processes alone gives a good fit.

The ratios of K+, K−, p, and p¯ yields to pion yields at transverse momenta (p⊥) ranging from 0.77 to 6.91 GeV/c arepresented for 200-, 300-, and 400-GeV p−p and 400-GeV p−d collisions. The dependences of the particle ratios on p⊥ and the scaling variable x⊥=2p⊥s are discussed.
