First results from the magnetic detector PLUTO at the new e + e − storage ring PETRA are shown. The ratio R of the cross section for hadron production to that for μ-pair production has been measured to be R = 5.0 ± 0.5 at 13 GeV and 4.3 ±0.5 at 17 GeV. Both values have an additional systematic error of 20%. The events show a typical 2-jet structure. The mean transverse momentum approaches a constant value with increasing energy implying a shrinkage of the jet opening angle.

We have studied inclusive KS0, Λ, and Λ¯ production and strange-resonance production in the reactions pp→(KS0, Λ, or Λ¯)+π±+anything at 405 GeV/c. The observed cross sections are 7.43 ± 0.45 mb for KS0, 4.01 ± 0.35 mb for Λ, and 0.63 ± 0.12 mb for Λ¯. From the analyses of the effective-mass distributions for the (KS0π±), (Λπ±), and (Λ¯π±) systems, the resonance production cross sections are determined as 4.1 ± 1.0 mb for K*+(890), 3.6 ± 1.0 mb for K*−(890), 3.4 ± 1.7 mb for K*±(1420), 0.67 ± 0.12 mb for Σ+(1385), 0.45 ± 0.09 mb for Σ−(1385), and 0.25 ± 0.08 mb for Σ¯±(1385). The inclusive total and differential cross sections are discussed in comparison with data at lower energies. The direct production cross sections for pseudoscalar, vector, and tensor K mesons are estimated to be 2.3 ± 1.2, 3.4 ± 1.0, and 1.7 ± 0.8 mb, respectively. Direct pseudoscalar-K-meson production accounts for less than one-third of the total inclusive kaon production. Evidence of vector-meson dominance in inclusive meson production at high energy is indicated.

We have performed a high-statistics experiment on the reaction π−p→K+K¯0π−n at 8.0 GeV/c. A Dalitz-plot analysis of the K+K¯0π− system finds that the D(1285) is a JPG=1++ state coupling predominantly to a δπ decay channel, while the E(1420) peak consists mostly of a JPG=0−+ wave with a substantial δπ decay mode. There is little evidence of a 1++ resonance at the E mass.

We have measured the differential cross-section and the analyzing power (polarization) for p-He4 elastic scattering at incident kinetic energies of 0.56, 0.80, 1.03, 1.24, and 1.73 GeV. The experiment used a polarized proton beam incident on a liquid helium target and a single arm magnetic spectrometer to detect elastic scattering. Both the differential cross sections and the analyzing power show structure near −t=0.25 (GeV/c)2 which decreases in magnitude with increasing energy. Both multiple scattering and optical model interpretations of the data are discussed. The inclusive production of Ξ − and Ξ ∗0 (1530) is investigated in K − p interactions at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . The inclusive production cross sections are 172 ± 20 μ b and 135 ± 15 μ b for the Ξ − , and 43 ± 7 μ b and 32 ± 5 μ b for the Ξ ∗0 (1530) at 10 and 16 GeV /c , respectively. In the beam momentum range up to 16 GeV/ c , the energy dependence of the cross section for Ξ − production in K − p interactions is similar to Σ − production in π − p interactions. It is, instead, different from the energy behaviour of Σ − production cross sections observed in π − p interactions. The Ξ − and Ξ ∗0 (1530) are both produced more in the forward ( x > 0) than in the backward hemisphere, indicating the presence of hyperon-exchange processes.

Cross-section values or upper limits are presented for twenty-five two-body hypercharge-exchange reactions in K − p and π + p interactions at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . The 16 GeV/ c results are compared with some predictions of line-reversal plus exchange-degenerate Regge poles, of SU(3) and of the additive quark model. Agreement is found in all cases.

Measurements are reported of the differential cross section for the reaction π − +p→ ω +n from threshold to a final-state c.m. momentum P ∗ of 200 MeV /c . The previously reported fall in total cross section σ/P ∗ below about 100 MeV/ c is again seen. The differential cross section remains close to isotropic over the entire range. A paralle experiment on the variation in the elastic differential cross section across the threshold shows evidence of this threshold. The elastic data cover a range of incident moments from 1010 to 1180 MeV/ c in steps of 5 MeV/ c .

Inclusive production of vector and tensor mesons is studied in a K − p experiment at 32 GeV/ c in the MIRABELLE bubble chamber. The K ∗ 0 (890) , ϱ 0 and ω cross sections are comparable, about 4 mb each. The K ∗ 0 (1420 and cross sections are also comparable, about 1 mb each. The K ∗ o ̈ + (890), Φ, K ∗ o ̈ − (1420) and f cross sections beam fragmentation; ϱ production is almost forward-backward symmetric in the c.m.s. The p T production slopes of K ∗ o ̈ − (890) and ϱ are similar, the Φ slope is shallower. Vector and tensor mesons alone are responsible for ≅50% (≅60%) of final-state pions

We present results on a number of non-diffractive two-body channels contributing to reactions K + p→K 0 π + p and K + p→K + π − π + p. The data come from an exposure of the Mirabelle bubble chamber to an r.f. separated K + beam of 32 GeV/ c at the Serpukhov accelerator. Total cross sections are given for the final states K ∗+ (890) p , K ∗+ (1420) p , K 0 Δ ++ (1232), K ∗+ (890) p , Δ ++ (1232), K ∗0 (1420) Δ ++ (1232), K ∗0 (1780) Δ ++ (1232) and K ∗0 (890) Δ ++ (1950) . The differential cross sections are given for all channels with sufficient statistics. The energy dependence of the total and differential cross sections is studied.
