New results on n p ---> d gamma, and time-reversal invariance

The angular distribution for the reaction n+p→d+γ has been measured at neutron energies of 475, 560, 625, and 750 MeV. Results based on 31 000 events at nine scattering angles are reported and compared with existing data for the inverse reaction, γ+d→n+p. The angular distributions are found to agree, as predicted by time-reversal invariance.

Anti-proton-nucleon scattering in deuterium below 1.0 gev/c

The p p and p n elastic differential cross sections have been extracted from the reaction p d→ p pn in which the deuteron breaks up. The incident antiproton momenta were 0.480, 0.735 and 0.940 GeV/ c , and the range of the momentum transfers was 0.04 < ∣ t ∣ < 0.7 (GeV/ c ) 2 . Both p p and p n differential cross sections are diffraction-like, with structure similar to the higher-momentum data.

Elastic anti-proton-deuteron scattering below 1.0 gev/c

We present differential cross sections for elastic p d scattering at beam momenta 0.735 and 0.940 GeV/ c and momentum transfers in the range 0.04<| t |<0.5(GeV/ c ) 2 . The p d elastic differential cross section is expressed in terms of a deutron form factor and the I =0 t -channel exchange N N amplitudes, enabling us to isolate the corresponding I =0 t -channel exchange cross sections.

$\pi^- p$ Interactions at 205-GeV/c: Cross-Sections and Charged Particle Multiplicity.

Results are reported based on a study of 3114 π−p events at 205 GeV/c in the National Accelerator Laboratory 30-in. bubble chamber. The measured π−p total and elastic cross sections are 24.0 ± 0.5 and 3.0 ± 0.3 mb, respectively. The elastic differential cross section has a slope of 9.0 ± 0.7 GeV−2 for 0.03≤−t≤0.6 GeV2. The average charged-particle multiplicity for the inelastic events is 8.02 ± 0.12.

The Discovery of a Second Narrow Resonance in e+ e- Annihilation

We have observed a second sharp peak in the cross section for e+e−→hadrons at a center-of-mass energy of 3.695±0.004 GeV. The upper limit of the full width at half-maximum is 2.7 MeV.

A Study of K+ pi- Elastic Scattering in the Reaction K+ n --> K+ pi- p Between 2.0-GeV/c and 3.0-GeV/c

Results are given from a study of 15 518 events of the reaction K + d → K + π − pp. The K + π − spin density matrix and the constraints imposed on it by positivity have been studied. Analyses of K + π − → K + π − elastic scattering have been carried out using methods developed by Estabrooks and Martin and Ochs and Wagner for the analogous case of ππ scattering. Results are found to be in agreement with earlier K π scattering studies using the reaction K + p → K + π − Δ ++ at much higher energies. The S-wave scattering length is found to be in agreement with the prediction of current algebra.

Pion and Nucleon Dissociation in $\pi^- p \to \pi^- \pi^+ \pi^- p$ at 205 GeV/c

In a 48 000-picture exposure of the Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber to a 205 GeV/ c π − beam, we have measured 169 events of the reaction, π − p → π − π + π − p, with a cross section of 635 ± 61 μ b. This reaction proceeds almost entirely via low mass π − → 3 π and p → p ππ dissociation. Factorization is satisfied for p → pππ dissociation in πp and pp interactions.

Measurement of e+ e- ---> e+ e- and e+ e- ---> mu+ mu- at SPEAR

The reactions e+e−→e+e− and e+e−→μ+μ− have been measured at center-of-mass energies 3.0, 3.8, and 4.8 GeV and production angles of 50°<θ<130° over all azimuthal angles. Agreement with quantum electrodynamics is excellent. New limits for cutoff parameters in quantum-electrodynamic-breakdown models are given.

The total cross section for hadron production by e+e− annihilation has been measured at center-of-mass energies between 2.4 and 5.0 GeV. Aside from the very narrow resonances ψ(3105) and ψ(3695), the cross section varies between 32 and 17 nb over this region with structure in the vicinity of 4.1 GeV.
