The cross section of the pure QED process e + e − → γγ has been measured using data accumulated during the 1989 and 1990 scans of the Z 0 resonance at LEP. Both the energy dependence and the angular distribution are in good agreement with the QED prediction. Upper limits on the branching ratios of Z 0 → γγ , Z 0 → π 0 γ and Z 0 → ηγ have been set at 1.4×10 −4 , 1.4×10 −4 and 2.0×10 −4 respectively. Lower limits on the cutoff parameters of the modified electron propagator have been found to be Λ + > 117 GeV and Λ − > 110 GeV. The reaction e + e − → γγγ has also been studied and was found to be consistent with the QED prediction. An upper limit on the branching ratio of Z 0 → γγγ has been set at 6.6 × 10 −5 . All the limits are given at 95% confidence level.

The OPAL detector at LEP is used to measure the branching ratio of theZ0 into invisible particles by measuring the cross section of single photon events ine+e− collisions at centre-of-mass energies near theZ0 resonance. In a data sample of 5.3 pb−1, we observe 73 events with single photons depositing more than 1.5 GeV in the electromagnetic calorimeter, with an expected background of 8±2 events not associated with invisibleZ0 decay. With this data we determine theZ0 invisible width to be 0.50±0.07±0.03 GeV, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. This corresponds to 3.0±0.4±0.2 light neutrino generations in the Standard Model.

From an analysis of multi-hadron events from Z 0 decays, values of the strong coupling constant α s ( M 2 Z 0 )=0.131±0.006 (exp)±0.002(theor.) and α s ( M z 0 2 ) = −0.009 +0.007 (exp.) −0.002 +0.006 (theor.) are derived from the energy-energy correlation distribution and its asymmetry, respectively, assuming the QCD renormalization scale μ = M Z 0 . The theoretical error accounts for differences between O ( α 2 s ) calculations. A two parameter fit Λ MS and the renormalization scale μ leads to Λ MS =216±85 MeV and μ 2 s =0.027±0.013 or to α s ( M 2 Z 0 )=0.117 +0.006 −0.008 (exp.) for the energy-energy correlation distribution. The energy-energy correlation asymmetry distribution is insensitive to a scale change: thus the α s value quoted above for this variable includes the theoretical uncertainty associated with the renormalization scale.
Data are at the hadron level, unfolded for initial-state radiation and for detector acceptance and resolution. Note that the systematic errors between bins are correlated.

The couplings of the Z 0 to charged leptons are studied using measurements of the lepton pair cross sections and forward-backward asymmetries at centre of mass energies near to the mass of the Z 0 . The data are consistent with lepton universality. Using a parametrisation of the lepton pair differential cross section which assumes that the Z 0 has only vector and axial couplings to leptons, the charged leptonic partial decay width of the Z 0 is determined to be Г ol+ol− = 83.1±1.9 MeV and the square of the product of the effective axial vector and vector coupling constants of the Z 0 to charged leptons to be a ̌ 2 ol v ̌ 2 ol = 0.0039± 0.0083 , in agreement with the standard model. A parametrisation in the form of the improved Born approximation gives effective leptonic axial vector and vector coupling constants a ̌ 2 ol = 0.998±0.024 and v ̌ 2 ol = 0.0044±0.0083 . In the framework of the standard model, the values of the parameters ϱ z and sin 2 θ w are found to be 0.998±0.024 and 0.233 +0.045 −0.012 respectively. Using the relationship in the minimal standard model between ϱ z and sin 2 θ w , the results sin 2 θ SM w = 0.233 +0.007 −0.006 is obtained. Our previously published measurement of the ratio of the hadronic to the leptonic partial width of the Z 0 is update: R z = 21.72 +0.71 −0.65 .

We study the inclusive momentum distribution of charged particles in multihadronic events produced in e + e − annihilations at E CM ∼ M (Z 0 ). We find agreement with the analytical formulae for gluon production that include the phenomena of soft gluon interference. Using data from CM energies between 14 and 91 GeV, we study the dependence of the inclusive momentum distribution on the centre of momentum energy. We find that the analytical formulae describe the data over the entire energy range. Both the momentum distribution at a fixed energy and the change with energy are described by QCD shower Monte Carlo's which include either coherent gluon branchings or string fragmentation. Simple incoherent models with independent fragmentation fail to reproduce the energy dependence and momentum spectra.

We present measurements of global event shape distributions in the hadronic decays of theZ0. The data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 1.3 pb−1, was collected with the OPAL detector at LEP. Most of the experimental distributions we present are unfolded for the finite acceptance and resolution of the OPAL detector. Through comparison with our unfolded data, we tune the parameter values of several Monte Carlo computer programs which simulate perturbative QCD and the hadronization of partons. Jetset version 7.2, Herwig version 3.4 and Ariadne version 3.1 all provide good descriptions of the experimental distributions. They in addition describe lower energy data with the parameter values adjusted at theZ0 energy. A complete second order matrix element Monte Carlo program with a modified perturbation scale is also compared to our 91 GeV data and its parameter values are adjusted. We obtained an unfolded value for the mean charged multiplicity of 21.28±0.04±0.84, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

We report on a measurement of the mass of the Z 0 boson, its total width, and its partial decay widths into hadrons and leptons. On the basis of 25 801 hadronic decays and 1999 decays into electrons, muons or taus, selected over eleven energy points between 88.28 GeV and 95.04 GeV, we obtain from a combined fit to hadrons and leptons a mass of M z =91.154±0.021 (exp)±0.030 (LEP) GeV, and a total width of Γ z =2.536±0.045 GeV. The errors on M z have been separated into the experimental error and the uncertainty due to the LEP beam energy. The measured leptonic partial widths are Γ ee =81.2±2.6 MeV, Γ μμ =82.6± 5.8 MeV, and Γ ττ =85.7±7.1 MeV, consistent with lepton universality. From a fit assuming lepton universality we obtain Γ ℓ + ℓ − = 81.9±2.0 MeV. The hadronic partial width is Γ had =1838±46 MeV. From the measured total and partial widths a model independent value for the invisible width is calculated to be Γ inv =453±44 MeV. The errors quoted include both the statistical and the systematic uncertainties.
Errors are statistical and point to point systematic luminosity error of 1 pct.

The pure QED reaction e + e − → γγ has been studied at centre of mass energies around the mass of the Z 0 boson using data recorded by the OPAL detector at LEP. Relative production rates of multijet hadronic final states of Z 0 boson decays, observed in e + e − annihilation around 91 GeV centre of mass energy, are presented. The data can be well described by analytic O( α s 2 ) QCD calculations and by QCD shower model calaculations with parameters as determined at lower energies. A first judgement of Λ MS and of the renormalization scale μ 2 in O( α s 2 ) QCD results in values similar to those obtained in the continuum of e + e − annihilations. Significant scaling violations are observed when the 3-jet fractions are compared to the corresponding results from smaller centre of mass energies. They can be interpreted as being entirely due tot the energy dependence of α s , as proposed by the nonabelian nature of QCD, The possibility of an energy independent coupling constant can be excluded with a significance of 5.7 standard deviations.
Data are corrected for final acceptance and resolution of the detector. No explicit corrections for hadronisation effects are applied.
We report on a search for new quarks in hadronic Z° decays. From the event shape analysis of a data sample containing 2185 multihadronic annihilation events, we observe no evidence for the top or b' quarks. We derive limits for the top and b' quark masses under the assumption of various possible standard model and non-standard model decay schemes. Our search is sensitive to quark masses larger than 23 GeV/ c 2 ; it yields the following lower limits at a 95% confidence level: 44.5 GeV/ c 2 for the top quark mass and 45.2 GeV/ c 2 for the b′ quark mass.

Combining these with our previous results on hadronic Z 0 decays, we find a hadronic width Γ had =1787±81±90 MeV and an invisible width Γ inv =552±85±71 MeV.

An extensive study of production and decay properties of charged and neutral Intermediate Vector Bosons (IVB) at the CERN proton-antiproton collider is presented. Intermediate Vector Bosons were detected in the electron, muon, and tau decay modes at centre-of-mass energies of 0.546 and 0.630 TeV. This paper is a summary, based on all the available data from the UA1 experiment from the running periods 1982–1985. Results are presented and compared with expectations of the Standard Eletroweak Model and QCD-improved Drell-Yan annihilation processes. The general conclusion is that there is an excellent agreement between the predictions of the Standard Model and our measurements.

This is the first full solid angle analysis of large transverse energy events in\(p\bar p\) collisions at the CERN collider. Events with transverse energies in excess of 200 GeV at\(\sqrt s= 630 GeV\) are studied for any non-standard physics and quantitatively compared with expectations from perturbative QCD Monte Carlo models. A corrected differential cross section is presented. A detailed examination is made of jet profiles, event jet multiplicities and the fraction of the transverse energy carried by the two jets with the highest transverse jet energies. There is good agreement with standard theory for events with transverse energies up to the largest observed values\(( \approx \sqrt {s/2} )\) and the analysis shows no evidence for any non-QCD mechanism to account for the event characteristics.

We have measured the W transverse momentum distribution ( p T W ) using a sample of 323 W → eν and W → μν events produced in proton-antiproton collisions at the CERN collider. In the present letter we extend the study of the distribution up to p T W ∼- m W and compare to leading and higher order QCD. This comparison is a precise test of QCD with hadron colliders and the inclusive spectrum gives good agreement over a large range of p T W . However we observed two events at very large p T W (∼- 100 GeV/ c ) in which the W candidate recoils against an energetic di-jet system. Both events have a very large missing transverse energy and a jet-jet mass compatible with the W mass. In a separate analysis, a topologically similar event has been observed in which a high-mass di-jet system is balanced by a large missing transverse energy which could be interpreted as Z 0 → ν ν decay. We cannot easily explain these three events in terms of explicit second-order QCD calculations. However we cannot exclude at this stage the possibility that they are the result of non-gaussian fluctuations in the response of UA1 calorimetry or a statistical fluctuation in the data.

We report evidence for beauty particle production through the observation of dimuon events from proton-antiproton collisions at energies of √ s =546 GeV and √ s =630 GeV at the CERN collider. Our data indicate that semi-leptonic decays of beauty particles are the dominant source of pairs of high- p T muons. The beauty flavour creation (gg or q¯q→b¯b ) cross-section needed to explain the dimuon rate is σ{ p¯p→b¯b +X, p b T 5 GeV/c, |η|<2.0}=(1.1±0.1±0.4) μb, which is in good agreement with QCD calculations. We also observe clear signals for ϒ→μ + μ − (hidden beauty) and high- p T J/ψ→μ + μ − , well above the backgraound of continuum muon pairs from the Drell-Yan mechanism.

Angular distributions of high-mass jet pairs (180< m 2 J <350 GeV) have been measured in the UA1 experiment at the CERN pp̄ Collider ( s =630 GeV ) . We show that angular distributions are independent of the subprocess centre-of-mass (CM) energy over this range, and use the data to put constraints on the definition of the Q 2 scale. The distribution for the very high mass jet pairs (240< m 2 J <300 GeV) has also been used to obtain a lower limit on the energy scale Λ c of compositeness of quarks. We find Λ c >415 GeV at 95% confidence level.

A sample of two-jet events from the UA1 experiment at the CERN $p \bar{p}$ Collider has been used to study the fragmentation of high-energy quark and gluon jets into charged hadrons. Compared with lower-energy jets observed in $e^+ e^−$ and $pp$ collisions, the fragmentation function measured in the present experiment is softer (i.e. peaked to smaller values of z) and the mean internal transverse momentum is larger, mainly because of the effects of the QCD scaling violations. Using our knowledge of the quark and gluon structure functions in the proton, together with the QCD matrix elements, a statistical separation of quark and gluon jets is achieved within the present experiment. The fragmentation function for the gluon jets is found to be softer, and the angular spread of the fragmentation products larger, than is the case for quark jets.

Results are presented on two-jet and three-jet cross sections, measured in the UA1 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) pp̄ Collider, at the highest available subprocess cms energies ( s ̂ >150 GeV ). Precise measurements of the two-jet angular distribution are consistent with previous results but show significant scale-breaking effects. The three-jet Dalitz plot and the three-jet angular distributions show evidence for final- and initial-state bremsstrahlung processes, in agreement with the leading-order QCD predictions. A comparison of the yield of wide-angle three-jet events with the yield of two-jet events at smaller scattering angles gives for the strong interaction coupling constant: α s ( K 3J K 2J )=0.16±0.02±0.03 at Q 2 ≈4000 GeV 2 , where the factor K 3J K 2J may plausibly be assumed to be close to unity.

The two-jet cross section measured in the UA1 apparatus at the CERN p p Collider has been analysed in terms of the centre-of-mass scattering angle θ and the scaled longitudinal parton momenta x 1 and x 2 . With a segmented total absorption calorimeter of large acceptance, we have measured the total transverse energy spectrum for pp̄ collisions at s 1 2 = 540 GeV up to ΣE T = 130 GeV in the pseudo-rapidity range | η |< 1.5. Using two different algorithms, we have looked for localized depositions of transverse energy (jets). For ΣE T > 40 GeV , the fraction of events with two jets increases with Σ E T ; this event structure is dominant for ΣE T > 100 GeV. We measure the inclusive jet cross section up to E T (jet) = 60 GeV and the two-jets mass distribution to 120 GeV/ c 2 . The measured cross sections are compatible with the predictions of hard scattering models based on QCD.

The polarization parameter P for the reactions p p → π − π + and p p → K − K + has been measured over essentially the full angular range at ll laboratory momenta between 1.0 and 2.2. GeV/ c , using a proton target polarized perpendicular to the scattering plane. The angles and momenta of both final state particles were determined from wire spark chambers, using the deflection caused by the polarized target magnet. Between 1000 and 5300 π − π + events, and 140 and 1300 K − K + events, were measured at each momentum. Differential cross sections for p p → π − π + were obtained. These are in excellent agreement with previous results. The polarization parameter for both channels is very close to +1 over much of the angular range. Legendre polynomial fits to the data are presented.
