The reaction p p → Λ Λ → p π + pπ − is studied in the experiment PS185 at the CERN Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR). A precise measurement of the excitation function in the immediate threshold region below 6 MeV excess energy was achieved. The total cross section shows an unexpected behaviour around 1 MeV excess energy.

Measurement of the double spin asymmetry A-LL for inclusive multi gamma pair production with 200-GeV/c polarized proton beam and polarized proton target

The invariant double-differential cross section, E 1 E 2 d 6 σ / d p 3 1 d p 3 2 , and the double-spin asymmetry, A LL , for inclusive multi-γ pair production in which γ-rays came from neutral mesons were measured with a 200 GeV / c longitudinally-polarized proton beam and a longitudinally-polarized proton target. Most of the multi-γ pairs comes from two-jet type events which are sensitive to partonic interaction. The A LL values were found to be consistent with zero. The invariant double-differential cross section for inclusive π 0 π 0 production was also measured. These measured cross sections are consistent with LUND Monte Carlo simulations. Using the LUND Monte Carlo simulation package with the Carlitz-Kaur model of spin dependent distribution functions of valence quarks, the A LL values have been compared with theoretical predictions of gluon polarization, ΔG / G . The results put restrictions on the size of ΔG / G in the region of 0.05 ⪅ x ⪅ 0.35.

The φπ + /ωπ + ratio from n¯p annihilations on a liquid hydrogen target, for n¯ momenta between 64 and 297 MeV/ c , was measured using the OBELIX spectrometer at LEAR. The ratio R(ϕπ/ωπ)=σ(n¯p→ϕπ+)/σ(n¯p→ωπ+) turned out 0.110±0.015 stat ±0.006 syst . Implications of this result on the OZI rule are discussed.

Precision measurement of the neutron magnetic form-factor

We present a precise measurement of the neutron magnetic form factor G mn at low momentum transfer ( q = 1.69 fm −1 ). From a simultaneous measurement of D ( e , e ′ n ) and D ( e , e ′ p ) we obtain the ratio of neutron and proton cross sections. The neutron detection efficiency is obtained from a separate measurement using tagged neutrons produced by H ( n , p ) n scattering of a monochromatic neutron beam. In contrast to previous determinations of G mn , the present value is insensitive to the systematic uncertainties in the interpretation of the data in terms of G mn and represents a determination of G mn to ±1.7%.

Measurement of gamma p ---> K+ Lambda and gamma p ---> K+ Sigma0 at photon energies up to 1.47-GeV

Z.Phys.C 63 (1994) 37-47, 1994.
Inspire Record 380478 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.14114

The reactions γp→K+ Λ and γp→K+ Σ0 have been measured with the multiparticle detector system SAPHIR at ELSA in Bonn. Besides the differential cross sections the Λ polarization and, for the first time, the Σ0 polarization have been determined in a photon induced reaction. All data are presented as functions of the photon energy (from threshold up to 1.47 GeV) and of the kaon production angle (0°–180°). The polarization of both Λ and Σ0 is substantial at all energies and varies strongly with the production angle.

Measurements of the two and three spin index observables in n p elastic scattering between 0.8-GeV and 1.1-GeV

We present data of several rescattering observables measured inn p elastic scattering between 0.80 and 1.10 GeV. The SATURNE II polarized beam of free neutrons obtained from the break-up of polarized deuterons was scattered on the Saclay polarized frozen-spin proton target. Three different configurations of beam and target polarization directions were used: the observablesDonon andKonno were measured with the normal-normal spin configuration at eight energies;Nonkk,Dos″ok andKos″ko were determined with the longitudinal-longitudinal configuration at six energies;Nonsk,Dos″ok andKos″so with the sideway-longitudinal configuration at six energies. Part of the data was obtained with an unpolarized CH2 target where only the two spin-index polarization transfer parametersKos″ko andKos″so were determined. Data are compared with phase shift analyses predictions and with the LAMPF results at 0.788 GeV. Present results are the first measurements of rescattering observables above 0.80 GeV. They provide an important contribution to any future theoretical or phenomenological analysis.

Inclusive charged pion production in hadron nucleus interactions at 100-GeV/c and 320-GeV/c

Z.Phys.C 62 (1994) 199-227, 1994.
Inspire Record 378192 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.14207

An experiment has been performed with the Fermilab 30-inch bubble chamber and Downstream Particle Identifier to study inclusive charged pion production in the high energy interactions of π±,K+,p and\(\bar p\) with thin foils of magnesium, silver and gold. The laboratory rapidity and transverse momentum distributions are presented separately for π+ and π− production. Comparisons are made with data from hadron-proton interactions and theA dependence of the cross sections in the different kinematic regions is discussed. We investigate the dependence of the cross sections on the number of observed protons ejected from the nucleus. By using our π−A data from two different beam energies, we study the energy dependence of these spectra. Comparisons are made with the VENUS string model Monte Carlo.

Radiative decay of the Delta resonance: Analyzing powers for pi- p (polarized) ---> gamma n

Stasko, J.C. ; Bassalleck, B. ; Booth, E.C. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.Lett. 72 (1994) 973-976, 1994.
Inspire Record 376202 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.19677

The polarized target asymmetry AN for π−p→→γn has been measured by coincident detection of the γ and the neutron at several angles across the Δ resonace energy region. A high-resolution NaI γ spectrometer together with good time-of-flight information for the neutron resulted in excellent separation of this radiative capture reaction from the much higher cross-section charge exchange reaction π−p→→π0n. Statistical uncertainties are ΔAN=0.02-0.04, representing a significant improvement over previous results. The new data are discussed in the context of recent theoretical models.

Neutron halo in heavy nuclei from anti-proton absorption

Lubinski, P. ; Jastrzebski, J. ; Grochulska, A. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.Lett. 73 (1994) 3199-3202, 1994.
Inspire Record 384612 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.19678

A new method to study the nuclear periphery using antiproton annihilation was applied to nine isotopes with mass numbers between 58 and 238. The method makes use of the detection of the radioactive annihilation products one unit lower in mass number than the target. A clear neutron halo effect, strongly correlated with the neutron binding energy, was observed in some nuclei. The experimental results are in qualitative agreement with calculations of proton and neutron densities at the nuclear periphery based on either a simple asymptotic density model or a more complex Hartree-Fock approach.
