We have studied inclusive KS0, Λ, and Λ¯ production and strange-resonance production in the reactions pp→(KS0, Λ, or Λ¯)+π±+anything at 405 GeV/c. The observed cross sections are 7.43 ± 0.45 mb for KS0, 4.01 ± 0.35 mb for Λ, and 0.63 ± 0.12 mb for Λ¯. From the analyses of the effective-mass distributions for the (KS0π±), (Λπ±), and (Λ¯π±) systems, the resonance production cross sections are determined as 4.1 ± 1.0 mb for K*+(890), 3.6 ± 1.0 mb for K*−(890), 3.4 ± 1.7 mb for K*±(1420), 0.67 ± 0.12 mb for Σ+(1385), 0.45 ± 0.09 mb for Σ−(1385), and 0.25 ± 0.08 mb for Σ¯±(1385). The inclusive total and differential cross sections are discussed in comparison with data at lower energies. The direct production cross sections for pseudoscalar, vector, and tensor K mesons are estimated to be 2.3 ± 1.2, 3.4 ± 1.0, and 1.7 ± 0.8 mb, respectively. Direct pseudoscalar-K-meson production accounts for less than one-third of the total inclusive kaon production. Evidence of vector-meson dominance in inclusive meson production at high energy is indicated.

Particle and Anti-particle Production by 200 GeV/c Protons in the Charged Hyperon Beam at the CERN SPS

A charge hyperon beam has been brought into operation at the CERN SPS. Particles are identified by a DISC Čerenkov counter, and decay products are analysed by a magnetic spectrometer. Cross sections for the inclusive production of π + , K + , p , Σ + , Σ − , ζ − , d, and π − , K − , p , Σ + , Σ − , ζ − , ω − , d in the forward direction have been measured at laboratory momenta between 70 and 130 GeV/ c . This range of momenta corresponds to 0.35 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.66 for an incident proton momentum of 200 GeV/ c . Antihyperon ( Σ − , ζ − , Σ + ) and Σ + and ω − fluxes have been measured for the first time in a hyperon beam.

Neutral Strange Particle Production by 300-GeV Protons

A neutral beam designed to transmit a high flux of Λ0 hyperons with momenta above 50 GeV/c has been built and operated at Fermilab. Inclusive production cross sections per target nucleus have been measured for p+A→Λ0+X, p+A→KS0+X, and p+A→Λ¯0+X with 300-GeV protons incident on solid targets A=berylium,copper,andlead. The region of phase space covered is predominantly projectile fragmentation: 0.2<~x<~1, 0<~p⊥<~2 GeV/c. The A dependence of the inclusive cross sections is analyzed. The cross sections are compared to other work in pp collisions by extrapolating the A dependence to A=1. The results of measurements of Λ0 and Λ¯0 polarization from the beryllium target are presented.

Cross-section of the Reaction $e^+ e^- \to \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^+ \pi^-$ for Center-of-mass Energies From 890-{MeV} to 1100-{MeV}

We present the results of a measurement of the cross section oof the reaction e + e − → π + π − π + π − from 890 to 1100 MeV in the center of mass, obtained with a magnetic detector at the Orsay Storage Ring ACO. With respect to previous experiments, the present one offers the possibility of reconstructing events with at least one constraint and his improved statistics. We find that our measurement of the cross section for e + e − → π + π − π + π − is compatible with quasi two-body production of π A 1 ( m A1 = 1.1 GeV, Γ A1 ∼ 0.2−0.3 GeV), through the ϱ and ϱ′(1600) intermediate states. We were able to states. We were able to determine the cross section of this reaction at the energy of the φ meson and consequently an upper limit on the branching ratio of φ → π + π − π + π − .

In a large-acceptance spectrometer, muon pairs and associated hadrons were observed with μμ masses up to 10 GeV/ c 2 and ΔM M = 0.015 resolution. We report here on the production of 4000 J/ ψ and 80 ψ ′ mesons.

Production Characteristics of the F Meson

Inclusive cross sections of η production by e + e - annihilation for c.m. energies between 4.0 and 5.0 GeV are presented. The η production is shown to be correlated with the production of a weakly decaying particle, indicating that its main source is F production. At the 4.42 GeV resonance it is correlated with a low energy photon, suggesting F F ∗ or F ∗ F ∗ production. A mass determination of the F is made at 4.42 GeV using the F → ηπ decay channel.

Scaling properties of high mass symmetric hadron and pion pair production in proton - beryllium collisions

We present measurements of the production symmetric high-mass hadron and pion pairs by protons of 200, 300, and 400 GeV, incident on a beryllium target. The two-particle invariant cross section for pion production can be described by the function E1E2d6σdp13dp23=(1.7×10−28)pt−8.4(1−xt)14 cm2/GeV4 (where pt is the mean pt of the two hadrons). Functions of the same form have been used in describing single-pion inclusive production. Equality of the exponents of pt in the two processes is observed, confirming the role of smearing contributions to single-hadron cross sections.

RESONANCE PRODUCTION IN THE REACTION anti-p d ---> p(s) pi+ pi- pi- pi0 AT 0.4-GeV/c TO 0.9-GeV/c ANTI-PROTON MOMENTA

Resonance production has been studied in the annihilation process p n aarπ + π - π - π 0 induced by antiprotons in the 0.4 to 0.9 GeV/ c momentum range. We observe strong production of ϱ mesons, together with some f 0 (predominantly in the ϱf 0 channel), ω 0 and A 2 mesons and there is a strong ϱϱ signal. We also observe a broad (~300 MeV/ c 2 ) enhancement at ~1100 MeV/c 2 in the π + π - π - invariant-mass distribution, whereas no such enhancement is seen in the π + π - π 0 channel; we have considered various explanations for this enhancement, including an “A 1 ” effect and interference between amplitudes for conventional resonance production.

PRODUCTION AND DECAY ANGULAR DISTRIBUTIONS OF THE Y* (1385) IN THE LINE REVERSED REACTIONS: pi+ p ---> K+ Y* (1385) AND K- p ---> pi- Y* (1385) AT 11.5-GeV/c

We have measured in a single experimental setup, the differential cross sections and decay angular distributions of the Y ∗ (1385) produced in the two line-reversed reactions: π + p → K + Y ∗+ (1385) (279 events/ω b ) and K − p → π − Y ∗+ (1385) (190 events/ωb) at 11.5 GeV/ c . The data have been derived from a triggered bubble-chamber experiment using the SLAC Hybrid Facility. We find the differential cross sections and Y ∗ polarizations for the two reactions to be in agreement with exchange-degeneracy predictions, if kinematic differences are taken into account. The Stodolsky-Sakurai and additive quark model predictions are in agreement with the main features of the decay angular distributions of the Y ∗ (1385), except for small violations at low momentum transfer, which can be associated with a finite helicity non-flip contribution in the forward direction.

Production of High Transverse Momentum Low Mass Electron - Positron Pairs in High-energy $p p$ Collisions

The production of electron-positron pairs of masses below 1200 MeV/ c 2 and of transverse momentum above 1.8 GeV/ c has been studied in pp collisions at √ s = 53 and 63 GeV. The cross section for ϱ, ω, and φ production are presented. The continuum below 600 MeV/ c 2 is consistent with origination from Dalitz decays of η and ω mesons and from semileptonic decay of D and D mesons.
