Small angle elastic scattering events have been observed at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. Directions of both particles as well as the collision vertex are reconstructed with the help of four sets of spark chambers, two for each of the two arms. The elastic nature of the events is demonstrated by a collinearity requirement. We find values for the (diffraction) slope parameter in disagreement with the simple linear extrapolation of lower energy (Surpukov) data.

We have measured the differential cross section for pp and p̄p elastic scattering at √ s = 31, 53 and 62 GeV in the interval 0.05 < | t | < 0.85 GeV 2 at the CERN ISR using the Split Field Magnet detector. At 53 and 62 GeV, for 0.17 < | t | < 0.85 GeV 2 both pp and p̄p data show simple exponential behaviour in t ; at √ s = 31 GeV the data for 0.05 < | t | < 0.85 GeV 2 are consistent with a change in slope near | t | = 0.15 GeV 2 .

The cross sections is fitted in the framework of the triple Regge model. The symbols P and R in the (C=...) denote pomeron and reggeon, respectively. For fit I and II the authors used conventional trajectories alpha(P) = 1 +0.25*T, alpha(R) = 0.5 + T. Fit II is restricted to data with (1 - M(P=4)**2/S) > 0.84. In fit III they use alpha(R) = 0.2 + T for the RRP term. Fit IV is like fit I with additional fixed (pion pion P) term.

The cross sections is fitted in the farmework of the triple Regge model. The symbols P and R in teh (C=...) denote pomeron and reggeon, respectively. CONST(C=C) and SLOPE are from the replacement of the RRP term by the exponential one : CONST(C=C)*(SLOPE*(1-x)). See text for detail.

Production of neutral strange particles in muon - nucleon scattering at 490-GeV

The production ofK0, Λ and\(\bar \Lambda \) particles is studied in the E665 muon-nucleon experiment at Fermilab. The average multiplicities and squared transverse momenta are measured as a function ofxF andW2. Most features of the data can be well described by the Lund model. Within this model, the data on the K0/π± ratios and on the averageK0 multiplicity in the forward region favor a strangeness suppression factors/u in the fragmentation process near 0.20. Clear evidence for QCD effects is seen in the average squared transverse momentum ofK0 and Λ particles.

We present a measurement and comparison of the χc1 and χc2 production cross sections determined from interactions of 300-GeV/c π± and p with a Li target. We find χc1χc2 production ratios of 0.52−0.27+0.57 and 0.08−0.15+0.25 from reactions induced by π± and p, respectively.

The cross section per nucleon. The differential cross section is fitted by the equation : D(SIG)/D(PT**2)= CONST*EXP(SLOPE*PT), D(SIG)/D(XL) = CONST*(1-(XL-CONST(C=X0))**2)**POWER(C=1) , and D(SIG)/D(XL) = CONST*(1-ABS(XL-CONST(C=XC)))**POWER(C=2).

The cross section per nucleon. The differential cross section is fitted by the equation : D(SIG)/D(COS(THETA)) = CONST*(1+CONST*COS(THETA)**2), where THETA is the angle between the MU+ and beam momentum in the CHI/C rest frame.

$D$ Meson Production From 400 GeV/$c p p$ Interactions

We have measured the inclusive production properties of D and D messons produced from pp interactions at s =27.4 GeV . The differential production cross section is well represented by the empirical form d 2 σ d x F d P 2 T = 1 2 [σ ( D / D )(n+1)b](1−|x F |) n exp (−bp 2 T ) with n=4.9 ± 0.5, b=(1.0±0.1)( GeV /c) −2 , and the inclusive D / D cross section σ ( D / D ) is (30.2±3.3) ωb. The QCD fusion model predicts D / D production which is in good agreement with our data except for the magnitude of the cross section which depends sensitively on the assumed mass of the charm quark.
