Measurements of the midrapidity transverse energy distribution, $d\Et/d\eta$, are presented for $p$$+$$p$, $d$$+$Au, and Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV and additionally for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=62.4$ and 130 GeV. The $d\Et/d\eta$ distributions are first compared with the number of nucleon participants $N_{\rm part}$, number of binary collisions $N_{\rm coll}$, and number of constituent-quark participants $N_{qp}$ calculated from a Glauber model based on the nuclear geometry. For Au$+$Au, $\mean{d\Et/d\eta}/N_{\rm part}$ increases with $N_{\rm part}$, while $\mean{d\Et/d\eta}/N_{qp}$ is approximately constant for all three energies. This indicates that the two component ansatz, $dE_{T}/d\eta \propto (1-x) N_{\rm part}/2 + x N_{\rm coll}$, which has been used to represent $E_T$ distributions, is simply a proxy for $N_{qp}$, and that the $N_{\rm coll}$ term does not represent a hard-scattering component in $E_T$ distributions. The $dE_{T}/d\eta$ distributions of Au$+$Au and $d$$+$Au are then calculated from the measured $p$$+$$p$ $E_T$ distribution using two models that both reproduce the Au$+$Au data. However, while the number-of-constituent-quark-participant model agrees well with the $d$$+$Au data, the additive-quark model does not.

Using data from the Fermilab fixed target experiment E665, general properties of forward produced charged hadrons in μp interactions at a primary muon energy of 470 GeV are investigated. The normalized inclusive singleparticle distributions for Feynman-x D(xF ) and for the transverse momentum D(p2t , xF ) are measured as a function of W and Q2. The dependence of the average transverse momentum squared 〈p2t〉 on xF , W and Q2 is studied. The increasing contribution from diffractive production as Q2 decreases leads to a reduction of the average charged hadron multiplicities at low (positive) xF and an enhancement at large xF , for Q2 ≲ 10 GeV2. It also reduces 〈p2t〉 for Q2 ≲ 5 GeV2 and 0.4 ≲ xF < 1.0.

We compute the multifractal moments Gq in terms of a new scaled variable X suggested by Bialas and Gazdzicki to study the dynamical fluctuations of particles produced in the interactions of Au197 at 10.6A GeV with nuclear emulsion. An asymptotic power-law dependence of the moments on the bin size δX has been observed in pseudorapidity (η), azimuthal (φ), and η-φ phase spaces. The dynamical values of the generalized dimensions are determined in all the phase spaces. The dynamical properties of the produced particles are mapped onto smooth multifractal spectra f(Δαq) by excluding the statistical contribution. The Au197 results are compared with a Si28 ion at 14.5A GeV and a S32 beam at 200A GeV.

The production ofK0, Λ and\(\bar \Lambda \) particles is studied in the E665 muon-nucleon experiment at Fermilab. The average multiplicities and squared transverse momenta are measured as a function ofxF andW2. Most features of the data can be well described by the Lund model. Within this model, the data on the K0/π± ratios and on the averageK0 multiplicity in the forward region favor a strangeness suppression factors/u in the fragmentation process near 0.20. Clear evidence for QCD effects is seen in the average squared transverse momentum ofK0 and Λ particles.

Results on the production of charged hadrons in muon-deuteron and muon-xenon interactions are presented. The data were taken with the E665 spectrometer, which was exposed to the 490 GeV muon beam of the Tevatron at Fermilab. The use of a streamer chamber as vertex detector provides nearly 4π acceptance for charged particles. The μD data are compared with the μXe data in terms of multiplicity distributions, average multiplicities, forward-backward multiplicity correlations, rapidity and transverse momentum distributions and of two-particle rapidity correlations of charged hadrons. The data cover a range of invariant hadronic massesW from 8 to 30 GeV.

Results of negative binomial fits to charged hadron multiplicity distributions in muon-deuteron interactions for backward and forward hemispheres of the hadronic cm.
Pseudorapidity-interval dependence of multiplicity distributions of shower particles produced in high energy interactions of protons at 800 GeV, 4 He at ≈ 11 A GeV, and 28 Si at 14.5 A GeV in nuclear emulsions have been investigated. The multiplicity distributions and correlated moments are parametrised successfully in terms of a negative binomial distribution (NBD). The heavy-ion data for NBD agree well with the predictions of the multistring Monte Carlo code VENUS.

We report the measurements on partial production cross sections of the multiple helium fragments emitted in the interactions of Si28 ions at 14.5A GeV in nuclear emulsion. Interaction mean free paths of the helium fragments have been investigated on the basis of helium multiplicity and size of the target nucleus as a function of the distance from their production points. Multiplicity scaling in the produced helium fragments is also observed.
