Target asymmetry for neutral pi meson photoproduction on polarized protons at 4 GeV in the forward direction

The asymmetry A = (σ + −σ − ) (σ + +σ − ) of the reaction γ p↑↓ → π 0 p was measured at the Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron DESY, Hamburg at a mean photon energy of 4.0 GeV in the four-momentum transfer range 0.2 (GeV/ c ) 2 ⩽ −t ⩽ 1.1 (GeV/ c ) 2 in steps of approximately 0.08 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The π 0 -meson and the proton were detected in coincidence. The asymmetry is compatible with zero in the t -range 0.2 (GeV/ c ) 2 ⩽ − t ⩽ 0.4 (GeV/ c ) 2 and negative in the t -range ⩾ 0.5 (GeV/ c ) 2 .

Properties of the inelastic k+ p reactions between 1.2 and 1.7 gev/c

The observation of 70 000 K 0 p π + events produced with K + incident momenta of 1.21, 1.29, 1.38 and 1.69 GeV/ c allows a detailed description of the production and decay of the Δ(1236) and K ∗ (892) resonances which dominate the K 0 p π + final state. No striking variations with energy are observed. The associated production of Δ and K ∗ near threshold shows striking similarities with the same production at higher energy.

Measurement of the polarization parameter of the reactions pi- p ---> pi0 n and eta n at 5 and 8 gev/c

Measurements of the polarization parameter of the reactions π − p → π 0 n and π − p → η n at 4.90 and 7.85 GeV/ c and for a squared four-momentum transfer − t ranging from 0.1 to 2.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 have been achieved by using a butanol polarized proton target and detecting only the two γ's from the neutral meson decay. The background due to events involving bound protons has been separately measured and subtracted out. A large positive polarization has been found for the reaction π − p → π 0 n. It is consistent with other pion-nucleon scattering data connected by isospin conservation. The polarization for the reaction π − p → η n is not significantly different from zero within the large experimental errors.

Elastic electron - Proton Scattering at Large Four Momentum Transfer

Electron-proton elastic-scattering cross sections have been measured at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center for four-momentum transfers squared q 2 from 1.0 to 25.0 (GeVc)2. The electric (GEp) and magnetic (GMp) form factors of the proton were not separated, since angular distributions were not measured at each q 2. However, values for GMp were derived assuming various relations between GEp and GMp. Several theoretical models for the behavior of the proton magnetic form factor at high values of q 2 are compared with the data.

Study of t(z)=3/2 delta(1238) production in p p interactions at 6.6 gev/c

|Tz|=32Δ(1238) systems are studied from the standpoint of direct production utilizing experimental data on the reactions pp→pπ+n, pp→pπ+π−p, pp→pπ+π−π0p, and pp→pπ+π−π+n. Resonance-production total and differential cross sections are presented, in addition to the decay density-matrix elements. It is demonstrated that the experimentally defined Δ(1238) systems are not characterized solely by spin-parity 32+, and that corresponding elements of the density matrices of both pπ+ and π−n cases generally behave in a similar manner with increasing c.m. angle. Additional detailed studies of the t-channel moments are presented for peripherally produced πN systems as a function of both c.m. angle and πN invariant mass. Dynamical differences are observed between the pπ+ and nπ− moments for the very peripheral data. One-pion-exchange-model predictions are compared with the peripheral pπ+ moments and with several invariant-mass distributions from the pp→pπ+π−p data. Complications arising from the presence of two pπ+ combinations in the four- and five-body final-state data are discussed.

Reaction p n ---> p p pi- and n*(1450) production at 5.9 gev/c

A search for N ∗ (1450) production has been made among the 904 selected examples of the reaction pd → pp π − (p sp ) obtained in a bubble chamber exposure at 5.9 GeV/ c incident momentum. The cross section for the reaction pn → pp π − is found to be 1.4 ± 0.1 mb. The peripheral data are in good agreement with the predictions of a single-pion exchange model. Approximately 8% of the events can be attributed to N ∗ (1450) production by some other mechanism.

π − p → π 0 n and π − p → η n differential cross sections have been measured in nine nuclei ranging from hydrogen to lead at a 7.82 GeV/ c beam momentum and in a range of t going from 0 to −2 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The results can be understood in the framework of the Glauber theory which allows in addition a determination of the π 0 and η total cross sections on nucleons.
