New data are presented for the reaction K − p → Λπ + π − at 11 energies between 1775 and 1957 MeV in the centre-of-mass. New values for the masses and widths of the Σ ± (1385) are given. The differential cross sections and the complete spin density matrices for the reactions K − p → π ± Σ ∓ (1385) were extracted from these data using also the information from the Λ decay. An energy-dependent partial-wave analysis has been carried out over the c.m. range 1775–2170 MeV also using data from an earlier experiment. Comparisons between the observed resonant amplitudes and SU(3) and SU(6) W ⊎ O(3) predictions have been made.

The photon total cross section on protons has been measured with high precision in the Fermilab tagged-photon beam for photon energies from 18 to 185 GeV. The cross section decreases to a broad minimum near 40 GeV, and then rises by about 4 μb over the remainder of the range. A ρ+ω+ϕ vector-dominance model (normalized to low-energy data) falls below the high-energy results by 2 to 6 μb, suggesting a contribution from charm-anticharm states.

We have measured π±p and pp elastic differential cross sections in the range |cosθc.m.|<0.35 for incident momenta from 2 to 9.7 GeV/c for π−p and pp and from 2 to 6.3 GeV/c for π+p. We find that the fixed-c.m.-angle πp differential cross sections cannot be described as simple functions of s. The data are compared to the energy and angular dependence predicted by the constituent model of Gunion, Brodsky, and Blankenbecler.

We have measured the forward production spectra of various neutral particles produced by π−, K−, p¯, and p at 200 GeV/c, and by π− at 290 GeV/c incident on a Be target. The salient features of these measurements are (1) copious production of KSo at large Feynman xL for incident π− and K−, (2) production of roughly equal fluxes of Λ0 and Λ¯0 for incident π−, and (3) close similarity of the following spectra: π−→n and K−→Λ0; π−→Λ0, π−→Λ¯0, and p→KS0; π−→KS0 and p→Λ0. The overall features of the various distributions seem to agree with the ideas of dimensional counting presented in the constituent-interchange model of quark collisions. Results are presented in terms of the invariant cross section Ed3σ(xL, PT=0)dp3 per Be nucleus for each inclusive reaction.

Invariant inclusive cross-sections for π+-mesons and protons from\(\bar pp\) reactions at 22.4 GeV/c are presented. The average multiplicity for the production of π+-mesons is 1.92±0.02 and for protons 0.41±0.02. Annihilation spectra have been approximated by using the difference between\(\bar pp\) and pp data. The resulting distributions have similar gross features as the total\(\bar pp\) data.

Large-angle π±p elastic-scattering cross sections, measured between 2 and 9 GeV/c in fine intervals of incident momentum and scattering angle, are used to search for cross-section fluctuations occurring for small changes in the center-of-mass energy as suggested by Ericson and Mayer-Kuckuck and by Frautschi. Measurements of the total cross section have been performed at the ISR with c.m. energies between 23.5 GeV and 62.5 GeV. Two independent experimental methods have been applied, a measurement of total interaction rate and of small angle elastic scattering. Both experiments give consistent results showing that the total cross section increases by (11.8±1.5) % over the ISR energy range. This experiment has also measured the slope of the forward diffraction peak in elastic scattering at small momentum transfer. The elastic cross section shows the same relative rise as the total cross section, and the ratio λ of elastic to total cross section approaches a constant value of λ =0.178±0.003.

The production of the φ and ω mesons has been studied in the reactions p p → φ(ω)π + π − and p p → φ(ω) ϱ 0 at 0.70–0.76 GeV /c . The c.m. angular distribution of the φ meson in the reaction p p → φπ + π − is found to be consistent with isotropy. The corresponding distribution for ω is not. the ratio σ( p p → φπ + π − ) σ( p p → ωπ + π − ) is (10 ± 2.4) · 10 −3 , which leads to a value of (19 ± 5) · 10 −3 when corrected for the phase-space factor. Implications of this result for the OZI rule are discussed.

The K π − system produced in the reaction K p → K 0 π − p at 4.2 GeV/ c is studied using high-statistics bubble-chamber data. The spin-parity structure is analysed as a function of the K 0 π − mass up to 1.52 GeV. Production of K ∗ (890) and K ∗ (1420) is observed in helicity-0 and helicity-1 states. Contributions of natural and unnatural parity exchange are present. Considerable S-wave production is observed over the whole mass region considered. We also study the t ′ dependence of the K ∗ (890) and K ∗ (1420) amplitudes. A comparison of our results on K ∗ (890) production with the results of an analysis of charge-exchange K ∗ (890) production, allows the separation of I = 0 and I = 1 exchange amplitudes. Some qualitative remarks are made concerning K ∗ (1420) production.
