Pion Pair Production From $\gamma \gamma$ Collisions at {PEP}

We have studied several features of the production of charged-hardon pairs by γγ collisions. We have measured the f0 partial width Γf0→γγ(Q2) for Q2 in the range 0<Q2<1.4 GeV2/c2, and obtained Γf0→γγ=2.52±0.13±0.38 keV at Q2≈0. The measured Q2 dependence is in agreement with the generalized vector-dominance model. The cross section for γγ→(π+π−+K+K−) in the mass region 1.6≤Mππ≤2.5 GeV/c2 has also been measured and the result compared with that expected from the QCD continuum.

MEASUREMENT OF THE ASYMMETRY PARAMETER A IN PI- P ELASTIC AND CHARGE EXCHANGE SCATTERING AT PION ENERGIES T (PI) = 98-MEV, 238-MEV, 292-MEV, AND 310-MEV

The asymmetry parameter A in π−p elastic scattering at incident pion laboratory kinetic energies Tπ of 98, 238, and 2922 MeV and in π−p charge-exchange scattering π−p→π0n at Tπ=238, 292, and 310 MeV have been measured over a wide range of scattering angles (typically from about 60° to 130° c.m.) with a polarized proton target. The data have been used in an energy-independent phase-shift analysis to improve the precision of the pion-nucleon phase shifts, to set new limits on violation of isospin conservation in the pion-nucleon S wave, and to confirm significant charge dependence in the P32 wave.

A Measurement of the Cross-Section for Four Pion Production in gamma gamma Collisions at SPEAR

We present a measurement of the cross section for the reaction e + e − → e + e − π + π − π + π − at SPEAR. This channel is found to be large and dominated by the process γγ → ϱ 0 ϱ 0 → π + π − π + π − . The cross section, which is small just above the four-pion threshold, exhibits a large enhancement near the ϱ 0 ϱ 0 threshold.

The polarization parameter for K + n charge exchange scattering has been measured at five momenta between 0.851 GeV/ c and 1.351 GeV/ c for centre of mass angles −0.8 < cos θ ∗ < 0.8 . Results from a phase shift analysis incorporating these results are presented. No Z ∗ resonances are observed.

The polarizaton parameter has been measured for K + n elastic scatteringat five incident beam momenta between 0.851 GeV/ c and 1.351 GeV/ c for c.m. angles in the range −0.9 < cos θ ∗ < 0.9 . It is in good agreement with the most recent partial wave analysis of the KN system.

Measurement of the Parameters of the $\psi^{\prime\prime}$(3770) Resonance

We present a measurement of the cross section for hadron production by e+e− annihilation in the vicinity of the previously observed resonance near 3.77 GeV. The data are used to determine the parameters of the ψ(3770) resonance. The values found are: mass, 3764±5 MeV/c2, total width, 23.5±5 MeV, and partial width to electron pairs, 276±50 eV.

Measurements of K − p elastic scattering have been carried out at 14 momenta between 610 MeV/ c and 943 MeV/ c over the angular range −0.9 < cos θ < 0.9. The results agree well with the best existing data and have significantly smaller errors.
