A neutral beam designed to transmit a high flux of Λ0 hyperons with momenta above 50 GeV/c has been built and operated at Fermilab. Inclusive production cross sections per target nucleus have been measured for p+A→Λ0+X, p+A→KS0+X, and p+A→Λ¯0+X with 300-GeV protons incident on solid targets A=berylium, copper, andlead. The region of phase space covered is predominantly projectile fragmentation: 0.2<~x<~1, 0<~p⊥<~2 GeV/c. The A dependence of the inclusive cross sections is analyzed. The cross sections are compared to other work in pp collisions by extrapolating the A dependence to A=1. The results of measurements of Λ0 and Λ¯0 polarization from the beryllium target are presented.

We have measured the forward production spectra of various neutral particles produced by π−, K−, p¯, and p at 200 GeV/c, and by π− at 290 GeV/c incident on a Be target. The salient features of these measurements are (1) copious production of KSo at large Feynman xL for incident π− and K−, (2) production of roughly equal fluxes of Λ0 and Λ¯0 for incident π−, and (3) close similarity of the following spectra: π−→n and K−→Λ0; π−→Λ0, π−→Λ¯0, and p→KS0; π−→KS0 and p→Λ0. The overall features of the various distributions seem to agree with the ideas of dimensional counting presented in the constituent-interchange model of quark collisions. Results are presented in terms of the invariant cross section Ed3σ(xL, PT=0)dp3 per Be nucleus for each inclusive reaction.

Polarization of the scattered Λ has been measured in the reaction Λ+p→Λ+p. A total of 90 000 elastic events was recorded. Polarization was observed which decreased in magnitude with increasing momentum. For 0.1<~|t|<~0.4 GeV2 the polarization is P=−0.21±0.07 for p=110 GeV/c and is +0.01±0.04 at p=320 GeV/c. Results for 860 Λ¯−p elastic scatterings are also presented.

The real part of the forward amplitude for Compton scattering on protons was measured through the interference between the Compton and Bethe-Heithler amplitudes by detecting the zero-degree electron pairs asymmetrically. The measurement was made at an average photon energy of 〈k〉=2.2 GeV, and an average momentum transfer to the recoil proton 〈t〉=−0.027 (GeV/c)2. The result confirms the prediction of the Kramers-Kronig relation.

Cross sections and decay distribution moments are presented for the reaction p p → Δ ++ Δ ++ at 3.6 GeV/ c , and compared with previously published data at 9.1 and 12 GeV/ c . With the aid of the quark model, we have isolated the natural and unnatural parity exchange contributions and shown them to accord with expectations based on simple Regge-pole exchanges.

Heavy quarkonia are observed to be suppressed in relativistic heavy ion collisions relative to their production in p+p collisions scaled by the number of binary collisions. In order to determine if this suppression is related to color screening of these states in the produced medium, one needs to account for other nuclear modifications including those in cold nuclear matter. In this paper, we present new measurements from the PHENIX 2007 data set of J/psi yields at forward rapidity (1.2<|y|<2.2) in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. The data confirm the earlier finding that the suppression of J/psi at forward rapidity is stronger than at midrapidity, while also extending the measurement to finer bins in collision centrality and higher transverse momentum (pT). We compare the experimental data to the most recent theoretical calculations that incorporate a variety of physics mechanisms including gluon saturation, gluon shadowing, initial-state parton energy loss, cold nuclear matter breakup, color screening, and charm recombination. We find J/psi suppression beyond cold-nuclear-matter effects. However, the current level of disagreement between models and d+Au data precludes using these models to quantify the hot-nuclear-matter suppression.

Inclusive Production of Nonstrange Resonances in High-Energy $\nu p$ Charged Current Interactions

Inspire Record 144267 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.24174

We have examined the inclusive production of nonstrange particle resonances in νp interactions using the Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber. A sample of 2437 charged-current events with visible longitudinal momentum greater than 10 GeV/c was obtained. The ρ0 and Δ++(1232) are seen. An overall rate of 0.21±0.04 ρ0 per event is found. For five-prong events, the rate is 0.44±0.08 ρ0 per event. The ρ0Z distribution falls rapidly for Z greater than 0.4. The production of Δ++ is seen clearly in events with an identified proton. No evidence is seen for Δ0 production. An upper limit of 0.34 is placed on the ratio of ηπ0 (90% confidence level).

Inspire Record 1253852 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.62307

This Letter describes a model-independent search for the production of new resonances in photon + jet events using 20 inverse fb of proton--proton LHC data recorded with the ATLAS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 8 TeV. The photon + jet mass distribution is compared to a background model fit from data; no significant deviation from the background-only hypothesis is found. Limits are set at 95% credibility level on generic Gaussian-shaped signals and two benchmark phenomena beyond the Standard Model: non-thermal quantum black holes and excited quarks. Non-thermal quantum black holes are excluded below masses of 4.6 TeV and excited quarks are excluded below masses of 3.5 TeV.

Acceptance (A), efficiency (EPSILON), cross-section (SIG) and limits in number of events for the quantum black hole (QBH) benchmark model, as a function of the threshold mass M(th). Uncertainties on the cross section are on the order of 1%. The limits include statistical uncertainties only. Expected limits include the 68% uncertainty band. Acceptance was calculated using parton-level quantities by imposing criteria that apply directly to kinematic selections (photon/jet |eta|, photon/jet transverse momentum, Delta(eta), Delta(R)). All other selections, which in general correspond to event and object quality criteria, were used to calculate the efficiency based on the events included in the acceptance.

Search for long-lived neutral particles decaying into lepton jets in proton--proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

JHEP 11 (2014) 088, 2014.

Several models of physics beyond the Standard Model predict neutral particles that decay into final states consisting of collimated jets of light leptons and hadrons (so-called "lepton jets"). These particles can also be long-lived with decay length comparable to, or even larger than, the LHC detectors' linear dimensions. This paper presents the results of a search for lepton jets in proton--proton collisions at the centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV in a sample of 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ collected during 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Limits on models predicting Higgs boson decays to neutral long-lived lepton jets are derived as a function of the particle's proper decay length.
