Small angle elastic scattering events have been observed at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. Directions of both particles as well as the collision vertex are reconstructed with the help of four sets of spark chambers, two for each of the two arms. The elastic nature of the events is demonstrated by a collinearity requirement. We find values for the (diffraction) slope parameter in disagreement with the simple linear extrapolation of lower energy (Surpukov) data.

Results of a measurement of the π−p charge-exchange process at backward angles are presented. Differential cross sections were measured in the angular region −0.5<cosθ*<−1.0 at incident momenta of 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 GeV/c. An additional background subtraction to a version of the data published previously has a significant effect at 6 GeV/c and brings the data into agreement with more recent measurements. The 6-GeV/c data were combined with existing measurements of the differential cross sections for backward π+p and π−p elastic scattering to yield values for the isotopic-spin-½ and −32 u-channel and s-channel amplitudes for backward pion-nucleon scattering and for the magnitude of the phases between them. It is found that the u-channel amplitudes can be explained by pure Regge-pole (Δδ, Nα) exchange only near the extreme backward direction, but that a Reggeized absorption model agrees at least qualitatively with the data. The phase difference between the I=12 and 32 s-channel amplitudes is approximately 90° over the region −0.8<u<0 (GeV/c)2.

Using an 11-GeV bremsstrahlung beam and the SLAC 20-GeV spectrometer, we have measured K + missing mass spectra from hydrogen and deuterium at five angles with momentum transfer squared ranging from 0.025 to 0.46 GeV 2 . Steps in the spectra as a function of missing mass were found corresponding to production of Λ , Σ , Σ 1385 + Λ 1405 and Λ 1520 . The ratio Σ − and Σ 0 production is not consistent with pure isotopic spin 1 2 in the t -channel for the reaction γ N→K + Σ . The cross sections for γ N → K + Σ 1385 compared with γ N→ πΔ violate an SU(3) prediction.

We have measured the asymmetry of the cross section for γp→π+n from a polarized target at 5 and 16 GeV. The range of four-momentum transfer was 0.02<~−t<~1.0 GeV2. The π+ mesons were produced in a polarized butanol target and detected with the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center 20−GeVc spectrometer. A sizable asymmetry was found at both 5 and 16 GeV, a typical value being -0.6 near −t=0.3 GeV2. A small amount of data on the asymmetry of other photoproduction processes was also obtained.

Differential cross sections for He3 + He3 elastic scattering have been measured at 18 angles from 12.5 to 45° (lab) at energies of 17.91, 20.00, 22.00, 24.00, 26.00, 28.00, and 30.00 MeV (lab). In addition, differential cross sections have been measured at intermediate energies from 19.00 to 32.00 MeV (lab) at angles of 20, 28, 36, and 45° (lab). The relative standard deviations of the data are generally less than 2%, and there is an additional standard deviation in the cross-section scale of 3%. The measurements are compared with theoretical calculations using the resonating-group method in the one-channel approximation. A broad resonance in the l=3 partial wave is predicted by the theory, and such a resonance has been observed in the present experiment. Differences between theory and experiment can be qualitatively understood as being caused principally by omission in the theory of reaction channels and noncentral forces. The effect of radial distortion in resonating-group calculations for the He3 + He3 system has also been investigated in an approximate manner. It is found that the effect can be quite significant for calculations of the energies of states in Be6 below the He3 + He3 threshold.

Elastic and inelastic K L S regenerative scattering on copper and lead nuclei have been observed up to a momentum transfer of 0.17 GeV/ c . The elastic differential cross-section is of a ”diffractive” type. It can be described successfully in terms of an optical model only assuming an appreciable neutron excess in the vicinity of the nuclear surface.
