The reaction K + p → p + X is studied at a beam momentum of 16 GeV/ c using the events where a slow proton with momentum p lab < 1.2 GeV/ c is identified by its bubble density. The inclusive spectra presented and compared with those obtained in K + p interactions at 32 GeV/ c and K − p interactions at 14.3 GeV/ c . The prominent features associated with a triple-Regge formula are found to be consistent with the data. It is shown that the Δ ++ (1236) production strongly affects the shape of the inclusive spectra and the results of the triple-Regge fit. After removal of events associated with Δ ++ (1236) production, the data are consistent with the dominance of an ffR coupling.

Inclusive Production of anti-K* (890) and anti-K* (1420) in K- p Interactions at 10-GeV/c and 16-GeV/c

The inclusive production of K̄ ∗ (890) and K̄ ∗ (1420) is studied in K̄ − p interactions at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . At 10 GeV/ c an enhancement in the ( K ̄ 0 π − ) mass distribution is found at 1.74 GeV, but no clear signal is seen at 16 GeV/ c . The fraction of K 0 ' s coming from decay of the K ∗ (890) or K ∗ (1420) is large, being (50 ± 6)% and (45 ± 5)% at 10 and 16 GeV/ c , respectively. The inclusive cross sections for K ∗− (890) and K ∗0 (890) production are almost constant with energy from 8 to 32 GeV/ c with values of 3.5 and 3.3 mb, respectively. The K ∗ (890) production cross section is studied as a function of transverse and longitudinal variables and found to derive mainly from fragmentation of the incident K − meson. The spectra of K 0 ' s resulting from the decay of K ∗ (890) are studied.

Total and differential cross sections, Λ and Σ ∓ polarisations in π 0 Λ and π − Σ + final states as well as the Σ + (1385) density matrix elements are given.

We present a systematic analysis of the production of K ∗+ (892) and Δ ++ (1236) resonances in the K + p → K 0 p π + reaction at 5, 8.25 and 16 GeV/ c . We have measured total cross sections, differential cross sections, density matrix elements and examined resonance production mechanisms in terms of the exchange of states with definite naturality. Some results on the reaction K + p → K ∗+ (1420) p are also given.

PRISM Plot Analysis of the Reaction pi- p --> p pi+ pi- pi- at 16-GeV/c

A prism plot analysis of the reaction π − p→p π + π − π − at 16 GeV/ c has been made and the results are compared with those obtained in a similar analysis of the reaction π + p→ p π + π + π − at the same energy. The three dominating reaction mechanisms (pion dissociation, reggeon exchange, proton diffraction dissociation) appear to be well separated, while considerable residual overlaps are present inside these classes. The prism plot method is discussed as a means for detecting hidden structures and some evidence is presented for a broad three-pion enhancement around 2 GeV decaying primarily into ϱ 0 π − .

Transversity amplitudes and spin density matrix elements are determined for the process K − p → (π + π − ) s-wave ϵ 0 (1385). Predictions of the additive quark model and of duality diagrams are tested and found consistent with the data; this is the first information about the applicability of these models to processes where a scalar object is produced at the mesonic vertex.

Differential cross sections for K − n → Σ o π o have been measured at K − momenta between 680 and 840 MeV/ c in a bubble chamber experiment. For K − n → Σ o π − the Σ o polarization was also determined. The measurements were combined with the available data on K − p → Σπ in an energy-dependent partial wave analysis in the center of mass energy range from 1520 to 1745 MeV. An acceptable fit was obtained with the well established resonances.

Energy Dependence of the Reactions K0(L) p --> K0(s) p, pi+ Lambda, pi+ Sigma0 from 1540-MeV to 1610-MeV

The reactions K L o p→K S o p, π + Λ , π + Σ o have been measured for center-of-mass energies from 1540 to 1610 MeV. Channel cross sections and coefficients of the Legendre polynomial expansion of the differential cross sections and hyperon polarizations are presented. We see no evidence in the πΛ channel for the suggested 3 2 − resonance at 1580 MeV. The cross section for the K S o p channel shows an energy dependence which is not predicted by the existing phase shift solutions based on charged kaon data.

A πω enhancement at 1245 MeV is observed in the reaction K − p → Σ + π − ω. Its properties agree with those of a B meson produced by natural-parity exchange thus establishing a coupling of the B to a K K ∗ system.

We present the results of an experiment to study the reaction π−p→A2−p, A2−→KS0K− at 22.4 and 23.9 GeV/c. We have 3346 KS0K− events in the effective mass region 1.1 to 1.5 GeV, and covering the |t′| interval 0.0 to 1.0 (GeV/c)2. Because of the low background in this channel, we are able to study various |t′| regions, including the region 0.2 to 0.29 (GeV/c)2 in which the original split A2 peak was observed. We find no substructure in any region. We have also derived differential and total cross sections. The differential cross sections are well fitted by the form dσdt′=At′ebt′ with b≈7.0 (GeV/c)−2. The total cross section is in good agreement with the value derived from other experiments that measure the A2−→ρ0π− decay mode.
