We present the first data on photon-photon annihilation into hadrons for CM energies > 1 GeV obtained with the detector PLUTO at the e + e − storage ring PETRA. Cross sections are extracted using an inelastic eγ scattering formalism. The results are compared to expectations from Regge-like models.

Single photon production in pp collisions at 30 < √ s < 62 GeV has been measured with liquid-argon-lead calorimeters at the CERN ISR. This process remains approximately constant with increasing √ s . For fixed √ s , the single photon to π 0 ratio increases strongly with increase in p T . The γ π 0 ratio is about 0.2 for p T above 4.5 GeV/c.

Inclusive $K^*$+- (892) Production in $p p$ and $\pi^+ p$ Interactions

A study is presented of the inclusive production cross sections of K ∗± (892) vector mesons in pp interactions at 12 and 24 GeV/ c and in π + p interactions at 16 GeV/ c . The K ∗± inclusive cross section is ∼0.9 mb for both pp at 24 GeV/ c and π + p interactions at 16 GeV/ c . For pp interactions, σ( K ∗+ ) and σ( K ∗− ) are seen to rise with energy, showing a threshold behaviour. In both pp and π + p interactions, σ( K ∗+ ) largely exceeds σ( K ∗− ) at these energies and this excess is interpreted as K ∗+ production by beam and target fragmentations. The decays of K ∗±0 yield ∼30% of the K 0 observed in the final states. The p T 2 dependence of both K ∗+ and K ∗ − cross sections is described by an exponential with slope of ∼3.3 (GeV/ c ) −2 . The longitudinal momentum spectra for K ∗+ in 16 GeV/ c π + p and 24 GeV/ c pp interactions are similar in shape in the target hemisphere. The K ∗− spectra are similar over the whole kinematic region when viewed in the quark c.m.s. and point to a central production mechanism. Comparing K ∗+ and ρ 0 production, striking similarities are found.

Measurement of High-energy Direct Photons in $\psi$ Decays

The inclusive γ and π0 momentum distributions at the ψ have been measured. Using these data and estimates of η production, it is found that (4.1 ± 0.8)% of ψ decays contain a direct photon with energy greater than 60% of the beam energy. The expected momentum distribution for direct photons calculated to lowest order in quantum chromodynamics is qualitatively different from that observed in the data.

We present a measurement of the cross section for hadron production by e+e− annihilation in the vicinity of the previously observed resonance near 3.77 GeV. The data are used to determine the parameters of the ψ(3770) resonance. The values found are: mass, 3764±5 MeV/c2, total width, 23.5±5 MeV, and partial width to electron pairs, 276±50 eV.

Measurement of the Baryon Exchange Reactions $K^- p \to \Lambda \eta$, $K^- p \to \Lambda \pi^0$ at 6-{GeV}/$c$ and the Value of the $\eta N N$ Coupling Constant

In order to determine the ηNN coupling constant we have measured the two reactions K − p→ Λη and K − p→ Λπ 0 with a magnetic wire chamber spectrometer which contained a gamma counter for the γγ decays of π 0 and η. The Λ polarization and the differential cross sections are given. The latter have quite different u dependences. Their ratio is interpreted, in terms of a nucleon-Regge exchange model, as the effect of a small ηNN coupling constant for which we obtain G η NN 2 = G π NN 2 · (0.26 ± 0.10) as allowed by SU(3). The large value given by Heisenberg's non-linear field theory, G η NN 2 = G π NN 2 · 0.9, is excluded by this measurement if the characteristic u dependence of the Λπ 0 channel is attributed to N α Regge exchange.

An Experimental Test of Exchange Degeneracy in the Reactions $\pi^+ p \to K^+ \Sigma^+$, $\pi^+ p \to K^+ \Sigma^+$ (1385) and Their Line Reversed Partners

A description is given of an experimental study of exchange degeneracy (EXD) in hypercharge-exchange reactions using the line-reversed partners π + p→K + Σ + (K − p→ π − Σ + ) and π + p→ K + Σ + (1385) (K − p→ π − Σ + (1385)) at incident momenta of 7.0 and 10.1 GeV/ c . Both pairs of reaction were measured in the same apparatus, with particular care being taken to minimize relative normalization errors. For the Σ production reactions we present high statistics measurements of the differential cross sections and polarizations from t ′=0 to large t . The general trends of the data agree with naive expectations from weak EXD. The cross-section difference in the extreme forward direction at the higher momentum is consistent with zero and there is a general reduction in the cross-section differences going from the lower to the higher momentum. The polarizations are approximately equal in magnitude and of opposite sign between the two reactions. On the other hand, the data do not agree with the detailed predictions of EXD. The slope for the positive reaction is systematically steeper in the forward region than for the negative reaction and there is a complex s and t dependence for the cross-section differences including a cross-over at t ⋍ −0.8( GeV /c) 2 . For the Σ(1385) production reactions, we present differential cross-section measurements in the forward region (| t |<0.3(GeV/ c ) 2 ). The cross-section differences are substantial and essentially constant over the s and t ranges studied.

Search for a 'Top' Threshold in Hadronic $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation at Energies Between 22-{GeV} and 31.6-{GeV}

Results on e + e − annihilation into hadrons at c.m. energies between 22 and 31.6 GeV are presented. The data were accumulated with the PLUTO detector at PETRA. The events are dominantly of the two-jet type. The value of the relative hadronic cross section R =3.88 ± 0.22 along with the details of the sphericity and thrust distribution rule out an open (tt̄) channel (Q t = 2 3 ) below 30 GeV. The inclusive muon results support the above conclusion.

The emission of protons from targets of Li6, Li, C12, Al27, Ca40, V51, Zr90, and Pb under bombardment from 800 MeV protons has been studied using a high resolution proton spectrometer. Spectra were measured at laboratory scattering angles of 5°, 7°, 9°, 11°, 13°, 15°, 20°, 25°, and 30° with special emphasis on the quasifree region. Outgoing momenta corresponding to the region of pion production were examined at 11° and 15°. Absolute cross sections have been derived by reference to known (p,p) scattering data at 800 MeV. The quasifree scattering has been compared to a distorted-wave impulse approximation analysis by summing over the unobserved (struck) nucleon. The systematics of proton production and the applicability of the distorted-wave impulse approximation analyses are discussed. The reactionsΣvp→π+n,K+Λ,K+∑0 andΣvn→π+n were studied at invariant hadronic masses around 2.2. GeV forQ2=0.06, 0.28, 0.70, and 1.35 GeV2. The main results are: At small |t| the π+ production is dominated by longitudinally polarized photons and can be described by one pion exchange. At low |t| the transverse (π+n) cross section drops steeply withQ2, but remains roughly constant forQ2≧0.5 GeV2. For |t⊢≧0.8 GeV2, (π+n/dt) is almost independent ofQ2. The integrated cross section (π+n) shows a similarQ2-dependence asσtot (γvp) forQ2≧0.28 GeV2. The ratioσ(π-p)/σ(π+n) atQ2=0.70 and 1.35 GeV2 for |t|≧0.6 GeV2 is smaller than in photoproduction and close to 1/4. The ratioσ(K+∑0 decreases steeply withQ2 following roughly the predictions of the quark-parton model.
