We report on a measurement of the process e + e − →e + e − + hadrons, where one of the scattered electrons is detected at large angles, with an average Q 2 of 23 GeV. The results are analysed in terms of the photon structure function F 2 and are compared with QCD predictions.

Differential three-jet cross sections have been measured in e + e − -annihilation at an average CM energy of 33.8 GeV and were compared to first- and second-order predictions of QCD and of a QED-like abelian vector theory. QCD provides a good description of the observed distributions. The inclusion of second-order effects reduced the observed quark-gluon coupling strength by about 20% to α S = 0.16 ± 0.015 (stat.) ± 0.03 (syst.). The abelian vector theory is found to be incompatible with the data.

We present an analysis ofρ0ρ0 production by two photons in theρ0ρ0 invariant mass range from 1.2 to 2.0 GeV. From a study of the angular correlations in the process γγ→ρ0ρ0→π−π+π− we exclude a dominant contribution fromJP=0− or 2− states. The data indicate sizeable contributions fromJP=0+ for four pion massesM4π<1.7 GeV and fromJP=2+ forM4π>1.7 GeV. The data are also well described by a model with isotropic production and uncorrelated isotropic decay of theρ0,s. The cross section stays high below the nominalρ0ρ0 threshold, i.e.M4π<1.5 GeV. The matrix element forρ0ρ0 production is found to decrease steeply with increasingM4π. Upper limits for the couplings of the ι(1440) and Θ(1640) to γγ andρ0ρ0 are given:Γ(ι→γγ)·B(ι→ρ0ρ0)<1.0 keV andΓ(Θ→γγ)

We have observed ϱ 0 production in e + e − annihilation to hadrons at high energies. The differential cross section at a centre of mass energy W , of 34 GeV, is presented. In the range 0.2< x < 0.7, we measure 0.33 ± 0.06 (stat.) ± 0.07 (syst.), 0.22 ± 0.06 ± 0.05 and 0.22 ± 0.02 ± 0.05 ϱ 0 /event at W = 14, 22 and 34 GeV respectively.

We have studied the topologies of hadronic events in e + e - annihilation data taken in the region of the upsilon resonances with the non-magnetic CUSB detectors at CESR. Using a thrust-like variable we compare the decay of ϒ, ϒ′ and ϒPrime; find for ϒ″ a significant excess of high thrust events, which we interpret as evidence for electric dipole transitions.

Data on inclusive and semi-inclusive production of nonstrange meson resonances from a bubble chamber study of pn interactions at 19 GeV/c are presented. Most of the results concern ρ0 production. The inclusive cross-sectionσ(pn → ρ0+x)=(2.4±0.4) mb agrees well with pp data. The ρ0 cross-sections are equal in the protonlike and neutron-like hemispheres. The differential cross-sections are in general agreement with earlier observation in pp interactions. In the fragmentation region the approximate structure function can be described byEdσ/dx= =a(1−|x|)n withn=3.0±0.8 in agreement with recent predictions from quark counting rules. The production of ω(780) is observed in the reaction pn→pp+ω+X with a cross-section σ=(0.13±0.03) mb. There is indication of f0(1270) and g(1680) production.

The inclusive cross sections for the production of high transverse momentum π + and π − mesons in proton-proton interactions have been measured at the highest ISR energy √ s = 63 GeV and at a c.m. production angle of 50°. The cross sections for π + and π − mesons are compared as a function of transverse momentum. It is shown that the inclusive cross section of π − mesons decreases faster than the π + cross section. particle σ ( π ± )/ σ (charged particles) are presented as a function of transverse momentum.
