We have studied the K ππ system in the 14.3 GeV/ c reactions K − p → K − π + π − p, K − p → K 0 π − π 0 and K − p → K 0 π + π − n . The data have been obtained from a 500 000 picture exposure of the CERN 2m HBC. The first two final states are dominated by Q-production in the Kππ system; there is also an L-signal at M (K ππ ) ∼ 1.75 GeV. The reaction cross sections are compared to K − p data at other energies. We discuss the K ππ mass dependence of the diffractive production slope. Evidence is presented for a Q − p versus Q + p differential cross section cross-over around | t | = 0.17 GeV 2 . A t -channel isospin analysis for the KN → K ∗(890)π N channels in the Q-region shows that the I = 1 exchange amplitude is ⋍ 10% of the dominant I = 0 exchange amplitude. The K ππ decay distributions indicate a predominant J P = 1 + state in the Q-region, and an important J P = 2 − contribution in the L-region. We find neither s -channel nor t -channel helicity conservation at the meson vertex in the Q- or L-regions. The K π angular correlation moments within the K ππ diffractive system are characteristic of K π elastic scattering, suggesting a π -exchange Deck-type production mechanism. There is evidence for a Kf 0 and κπ contribution (where κ is the J P (K π ) = 0 + state) to the diffractive K ππ system. A fit to the K − π + π − and K 0 π − π 0 Dalitz-plot distributions for the Q-re gion indicates that the ratio of K ϱ to K ∗ π decay amplitudes decreases with increasing K ππ mass.

The average multiplicities 〈 n c 〉 and 〈n〉, of charged-plus-neutral pions produced in e + e − collisions, have been determined for total center-of-mass energies ranging from 1.2 to 2.4 GeV. No appreciable multiplicity variation is observed over this energy range, where the mean values 〈; n c 〉 = 3.3 +0.3 −0.2 and 〈 n 〉 = 4.4 +0.4 −0.2 are found.

A large solid angle detector has been used to observe π + π − π 0 events produced, at the ω energy, by electron-positron collisions in the ORSAY storage ring. From the ω excitation curve we have deduced: σ ( e + e − → ω 3 π ) = (180 ± 0.20) μ b, Γ = (9.1 ± 0.8) MeV and with B( ω → π + π − π 0 ) = 0.898 ± 0.045 we have calculated Γ e + e − = (0.76 ± 0. 08) keV and g 2 ω 4π = 18.4 ± 1.8 .

Results are presented on an analysis of the reaction K + p → K ∗+ (890) p at 16 GeV/ c and compared with data at lower incident momenta and with corresponding results for the reaction K − p → K ∗− (890) p. It is found for both reactions that the energy dependence of the cross section exhibits a simple ( p − n lab behaviour.

We have measured with good statistics the differential cross section for p p →π + π − , K + K − around 0°. Our data and previous results show that the s -dependence of dσ/d t has a value compatible with the appropriate baryon exchange.

The final results of an experimental investigation of the reaction γ+n→p+π− performed with a deuterium bubble chamber at the 1 GeV Frascati electrosynchrotron are presented. Total and differential cross-sections on neutrons are extracted by means of the spectator model, the reliability of which has been checked by numerous tests and is extensively discussed. The problems of a possible isotensor component in the electromagnetic current, the time-reversal invariance of the electromagnetic interactions and the photoproduction of the Roper resonance are considered in detail.

Multihadron production in e+ e- collisions at high energy

Inspire Record 87243 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.1179

Multihadron production by electron-positron colliding beams has been investigated for total centre-of-mass energies ranging from 1.2 to 2.4 GeV. The total cross-section, σtot ≡ σ(e+e−→π+π−+ + anything), is of the order of σμμ ≡ σ(e+e−→μ+μ−), with a threshold near 1 GeV. Partial cross-sections for the various channels are also derived. The cross-section of the specific channel e+e−→π+π−π+π− exhibits an energy dependence which is suggestive of a heavier vector meson, ρ' (mρ,≈ 1.6 GeV,Гρ, ≈ 350 Mev), having the same quantum numbers as the ρ-meson. An upper limit is given for the coupling constantfρ′ (fρ′/4π<18, wherefρ′=mρ′2e/gγρ′). Final states withG+ parity are found to be much more abundant than those withG− parity. The average multiplicity (charged plus neutral final-state pions) is found to be betweet 4 and 5 over all the energy range explored.

Electron-positron interactions at high energies

The results of an experiment performed at Adone, the 2×1.5-GeV e+e− Frascati storage ring, are presented. During ∼ 1500 hours of running time a total of 5164 electron-positron elastic scattering events (integrated luminosity L=3.5×1035 cm−2) and 605 noncoplanar events from the reaction e+e−→a±+b±+anything (effective integrated luminosity L=2.5×1035 cm−2) have been collected at c.m. energies ranging from 1.4 to 2.4 GeV. Over the energy range explored (1.4-2.4 GeV), corresponding to an average q2 ranging from 0.8 to 2.4 (GeV/c)2, the yield of wide-angle (60°<θ<120°) electron-positron elastic scattering events is found to be in good agreement with the predictions of quantum electrodynamics (QED) (R=σexpσQED=1.05±0.04). The noncoplanar events appear to be of a hadronic nature and are produced with a much higher cross section than predicted on the basis of ρ, ω, φ dominance at these energies. The total cross section for the reaction e+e−→a±b±+anything shows a rapid increase to ∼ 90 nb between 1.0 and 1.5 GeV and falls off slowly to ∼ 50 nb at 2.4 GeV. Cross sections for some of the channels contributing to this multihadron process (e+e−→π+π−π+π−, e+e−→π+π−π+π−+neutrals, e+e−→3π+3π−) have been determined and are reported.

Elastic electron-proton scattering between 0.05 and 0.30 (gev/c)-squared

Elastic electron proton scattering has been used to check the validity of the dipole fit of the proton form factors at momentum transfer between 0.05 and 0.30 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The general behaviour of the cross sections is in agreement with previous measurements and is close to the dipole predictions but there is the suggestion of some small amplitude deviations. It is speculated that these deviations may be related to similar effects in the proton formfactor derived from the ISR pp elastic scattering data via a Chou-Yang model.
