This paper gives a detailed description of an experiment which studies the interactions of muon-type neutrinos in hydrogen and deuterium. The experiment was performed at the Zero Gradient Synchrotron using the wide-band neutrino beam incident on the Argonne 12-foot bubble chamber filled with hydrogen and deuterium. The neutrino energy spectrum peaks at 0.5 GeV and has a tail extending to 6 GeV. The shape and intensity of the flux is determined using measurements of pion yields from beryllium. The produced pions are focused by one or (for the latter part of the experiment) two magnetic horns. A total of 364000 pictures were taken with a hydrogen filling of the bubble chamber and 903 000 with a deuterium filling. The scanning and other analyses of the events are described. The most abundant reaction occurs off neutrons and is quasi-elastic scattering νd→μ−pps. The separation of these events from background channels is discussed. The total and differential cross sections are analyzed to obtain the axial-vector form factor of the nucleon. Our result, expressed in terms of a dipole form factor, gives an axial-vector mass of 0.95±0.09 GeV. A comparison is made to previous measurements using neutrino beams, and also to determinations based upon threshold pion electroproduction experiments. In addition, the data are used to measure the weak vector form factor and so check the conserved-vector-current hypothesis.

This paper describes measurements of the semileptonic weak-neutral-current reactions νpμ→νpμ and ν¯pμ→ν¯pμ which yield the absolute differential cross sections dσ(νpμ)dQ2 and dσ(ν¯pμ)dQ2. The weak-neutral-current parameter, sin2θW, is determined to be sin2θW=0.220±0.016(stat.)(syst.)−0.031+0.023.

Measurement of Rates for Muonless Deep Inelastic Neutrino and anti-neutrino Interactions

Relative rates for deep inelastic neutrino and antineutrino scattering without a finalstate muon have been measured. For neutrinos the result is Rν=σ(νμ+nucleon→νμ+hadrons)σ(νμ+nucleon→μ−+hadrons)=0.11±0.05. The corresponding ratio for antineutrinos is Rν¯=0.32±0.09.

Analysis of 5180 ν¯ interactions shows a variation with energy of the inelasticity (y) distributions over the range 10 to 220 GeV and a dependence on the scaling variable x. From these data are obtained the approximate x dependence of the sea quarks and a limit on the strength of right-handed coupling between the u quark and a massive b quark.

We report here additional positive results of a search for muonless neutrino- and anti-neutrino-induced events using an enriched antineutrino beam and a muon identifier of relatively high geometric detection efficiency. The ratio of muonless to muon event rates is observed to be R=0.20±0.05. We observe no background derived from ordinary neutrino or antineutrino interactions that is capable of explaining the muonless signal.

Study of inclusive gamma and pi0 production in 12.4-gev/c p p interactions

From an exposure of the Argonne National Laboratory 12-foot bubble chamber to a beam of 12.4-GeV/c protons we have obtained a 3649-event sample of the reaction pp→γ+anything, where we observe photon conversions into e+e− pairs in the liquid hydrogen. We find that the invariant cross section for this reaction does not separate in its x and P⊥ dependence at our energy. By setting upper bounds on the cross sections for inclusive η and Σ0 production, we show that π0 decay is the dominant source of photons and therefore measure the cross section for inclusive π0 production to be σ(π0)=(31.5±2.6) mb. Comparison with the inclusive π+ and π− cross sections at 12.0 GeV/c shows that the relation 2σ(π0)=σ(π+)+σ(π−) is well satisfied. We confirm earlier indications that the average number of π0's per inelastic pp interaction is approximately independent of the number of associated charged particles produced.

Total and differential cross sections for νμe→νμe and ν¯μe→ν¯μe are measured. Values for the model-independent neutral-current couplings of the electron are found to be gV=−0.107±0.035(stat)±0.028(syst) and gA=−0.514±0.023(stat)±0.028(syst). The electroweak mixing parameter sin2θW is determined to be 0.195±0.018(stat)±0.013(syst). Limits are set for the charge radius and magnetic moment of the neutrino as (〈r2〉)<0.24×10−32 cm2 and fμ<0.85×10−9 Bohr magnetons, respectively.

Measurements of the semileptonic weak-neutral-current reactions νμp→νμp and ν¯μp→ν¯μp are presented. The experiment was performed using a 170-metric-ton high-resolution target detector in the BNL wide-band neutrino beam. High-statistics samples yield the absolute differential cross sections dσ(νμp)/dQ2 and dσ(ν¯μp)/dQ2. A measurement of the axial-vector form factor GA(Q2) is also presented. The results are in good agreement with the standard model SU(2)×U(1). The weak-neutral-current parameter sin2thetaW is determined to be sin2θW=0.220±0.016(stat)−0.031+0.023(syst).

A search for exotic I=2 hyperons decaying into Σ−π− or Σ−π−π0 has been completed in the final states Σ−π+π− and Σ−π+π−π0 produced in K−n interactions at 2.87 GeV/c. Cross sections for these two final states are 303±31 μb and 660±66 μb, respectively. Upper limits for exotic processes are σ(K−n→Y*−−π+, Y*−−→Σ−π−)<13 μb and σ(K−n→Y*−−π+, Y*−−→Σ−π−π0)<23 μb for Γ(Y*−−)<120 MeV; σ(K−n→Y*−−π+π0, Y*−−→Σ−π−)<28 μb for Γ(Y*−−)<80 MeV. Production cross sections have also been measured for all nonexotic resonances observed in the two final states.
