The spin correlation parameters A oosk and A ookk were measured at 0.834 and 0.995 GeV using the SATURNE II polarized proton beam and the Saclay frozen spin polarized target. The measurements were carried out in the angular region φ CM from 50° to ≃ 90°. The shape of the angular distribution A oosk (pp) = f ( θ CM ) changes rapidly from 0.8 to 1.0 GeV. The A ookk data points specify our previous measurements.

A non q q ,J PC = 1 −+ , I G =1 − meson has been observed in the study of the exclusive reaction π − p→π 0 ηn at 100 GeV. Its mass is (1406±20) MeV. Its width is (180±30) MeV.

Measurement of the Ratios of Deep Inelastic Muon - Nucleus Cross-Sections on Various Nuclei Compared to Deuterium

Results are presented on the ratios of the deep inelastic muon-nucleus cross sections for carbon, copper and tin nuclei to those measured on deuterium. The data confirm that the structure functions of the nucleon measured in nuclei are different from those measured on quasi-free nucleons in deuterium. The kinematic range of the data is such that 〈 Q 2 〉 ∼ 5 GeV 2 at x ∼ 0.03, increasing to 〈 Q 2 〉 ∼ 35 GeV 2 for x ∼ 0.65. The measured cross section ratios are less than unity for x ≲ 0.05 and for 0.25 ≲ x < 0.7. The decrease of the ratio below unity for low x becomes larger as A increases as might be expected from nuclear shadowing. However, this occurs at relatively large values of Q 2 (∼ 5 GeV 2 ) indicating that such shadowing is of patrionic origin.

The polarization in pion-nucleon charge exchange was measured at 6 GeV/c incident momentum for 0.1 (GeV/c)2 < |t| < 1.6 (GeV/c)2. Using the channel π+ n ↑ → π0p allowed precise measurement of the recoil proton for good rejection of inelastic events. The results are compared with previous experiments using channel π−p ↑ with or without detection of the recoil neutron.

Search for New Charged Leptons Decaying Into Massive Neutrinos and New Stable Charged Leptons in $e^+ e^-$ Collisions

A search for sequential charged leptons decaying into massive neutrinos has been performed at Ec.m.=56 GeV at the KEK colliding-beam accelerator TRISTAN. We have found no evidence for the production of the charged heavy leptons for an integrated luminosity of 5.3 pb−1. A search for stable charged leptons was also conducted yielding null results. A new mass limit on the charged heavy leptons was obtained as a function of the mass of the associated neutrinos.

Measurement of the imaginary part of the I=1 $\bar{N} N$ S‐wave scattering length

The survival time spectrum of slow antineutrons produced in a LH2 target has been measured. From these data the imaginary part of the I=1 spin averaged S‐wave antineutron proton scattering length has been deduced to be Im a1= −0.83±0.07 fm. The result lies within the range of values calculated from current potential models.

Measurement of Pion Proton Bremsstrahlung for Pions at 299-{MeV}

We have measured the fivefold differential cross section d5σ/dΩπdΩγdEγ for the process π+p→π+pγ with incident pions of energy 299 MeV. The angular regions for the outgoing pions (55°≤θlabπ≤95°), and photons (θlabγ=241°±10°) in coplanar geometry are selected to maximize the sensitivity to the radiation from the magnetic dipole moment of the Δ++(1232) resonance. At low photon energies, the data agree with the soft-photon approximation to pion-proton bremsstrahlung. At forward pion angles the data agree with older data and with the latest theoretical calculations for 2.3μp≤μΔ≤3.3μp. However at more backward pion angles where no data existed, the predictions fail.

High Transverse Momentum Hadron Hadron Correlations in $\sqrt{s}=38$.8 GeV Proton Proton Interactions

Measurements of correlations of nearly back-to-back hadrons produced at a large transverse momentum in s=38.8 GeV proton-proton collisions are presented and compared to previous results with a beryllium target. The correlations of identified unlike-sign hadron pairs in ratio to the correlation for all unlike-sign pairs are compared with predictions of the Lund model. These predictions differ from the data.

A(ll) at Small Momentum Transfers for the First Complete Determination of the Forward $p p$ Scattering Amplitude

The asymmetry A LL for pp elastic scattering has been measured at 650 and 800 MeV in the region of Coulomb-nuclear interference. The real part of the double-spin-flip amplitude extracted from these data completes our determination of the forward pp scattering amplitudes at these energies. Comparison with the predictions of forward dispersion relations reveals a discrepancy in the spin-dependent channels at 650 MeV.

A measurement of the spin asymmetry and determination of the structure function g(1) in deep inelastic muon proton scattering.

The spin asymmetry in deep inelastic scattering of longitudinally polarised muons by longitudinally polarised protons has been measured over a large x range (0.01< x <0.7). The spin-dependent structure function g 1 ( x ) for the proton has been determined and its integral over x found to be 0.114±0.012±0.026, in disagreement with the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule. Assuming the validity of the Bjorken sum rule, this result implies a significant negative value for the integral of g 1 for the neutron. These values for the integrals of g 1 lead to the conclusion that the total quark spin constitutes a rather small fraction of the spin of the nucleon.
