Fragmentation Spectra in $K^- p$ Interactions at 110-{GeV}/$c$

The longitudinal momentum spectra of mesons produced in the projectile fragmentation region ofK−p interactions at 110 GeV/c, measured in a bubble chamber experiment, are compared to two fragmentation models related to hadron production by incident leptons. The models give a qualitative description of the data. However, it is found that the mesons having a valence quark in common with the projectile tend to have higher momenta than predicted.

Experimental Test of Electroweak Effects at {PETRA} Energies

The differential cross sections for Bhabha scattering and μ pair production, and the total τ pair cross section as measured by the PLUTO detector at PETRA, have been analyzed to extract information on the weak interaction of leptons. The data are compared with unified gauge theories. Since the observed electroweak effects are still consistent with zero (within errors) we can set experimental limits on neutral current parameters atQ2 values of 950 GeV2. In the framework of the standard SU(2)×U(1) model we find sin2Θw<0.52(95% c.l.). In the context of general singleZo models we can excludeZo masses of less than 40 GeV.

Energy Dependence of Transverse Momentum Invariant Distribution of Pions and Neutral Kaons in $K^- p$ Interactions Between 14.3-{GeV}/$c$ and 70-{GeV}/$c$

The energy dependence of the transverse momentum invariant distribution of pions and neutral kaons is studied in K − p interactions between 14.3 and 70 GeV/ c . The large P T part of the distributions violates the Feynman scaling and, above P T ≃ 1.5 GeV/ c , appears to be reasonably described by hard scattering models. The variation of the average transverse momentum is also studied as a function of the c.m. reduced longitudinal momentum, and its behaviour is compared to the data obtained via the hadronic shower produced in lepton-hadron interactions.

Exotic Exchange Processes in $K^- p$ and $\pi^- p$ Interactions at 4-{GeV}/$c$

Exotic exchange processes observed in K − p and π − p scattering in the neighbourhoood of 4 GeV/ c are analysed in terms of standard models. Some new data on π − p induced processes are presented and used in the analysis. Regge-Regge cut predictions are found to be smaller than the data up to these energies. Baryonium exchange models are shown to be indistindistinguishable from Regge cut models as regards their phenomenological predictions. The double scattering quark model of Białas and Zalewski is compatible with data on the exotic exchange production of Σ and Y ∗ (1385), but fails for Ξ and Ξ ∗ (1530) production. Modifications of this model are discussed.

Hard Scattering and $\Delta - \Delta$ Exchange in Backward Photoproduction of $\Delta^{++} \pi^-$

A tagged photon beam and multiparticle spectrometer have been used to measure the backward photoproduction process γp → Δ ++ π − . The energy dependence of the production cross section between 2.8 and 4.8 GeV is studied and found to exhibit shrinkage in excess of that expected for Δ σ dominance. An interpretation of the production mechanism in terms of an incoherent mixture of Δ σ exchange and a “hard scattering” contribution is presented.

Measurements of energy-energy correlations in hadronic final states produced in e + e − annihilation at c.m. energies between 7.7 and 31.6 GeV are presented. The data are compared to perturbative QCD predictions. Good qualitative agreement above 20 GeV c.m. energy is found. The importance of non-perturbative effects is discussed, as well as the detailed behaviour of the correlation near 180°.
