Angular Distribution of the Target Asymmetry on Polarized Protons for the Reaction gamma p (Polarized) --> pi+ n at a Photon Energy of 700-MeV

At the Bonn 2.5 GeV electron synchrotron the angular distribution of the target asymmetry T = (σ↑ − σ↓) (σ↑ + σ↓) for the reaction γp↑ → π + n was measured at a mean photon energy of 700 MeV and pion CM-angles from 50° to 155°. The combination of a 3 He-cryostat, polarizing the free protons in the target up to 65%, with a large acceptance magnet for pion detection led to statistical errors of the target asymmetry comparable with those of cross section measurements.

K+ p Elastic Scattering at 32-GeV/c

Elastic scattering of 32.1 GeV/ c K + on protons has been measured in a bubble chamber experiment. Results are presented in the momentum transfer interval 0.06–1.40 GeV 2 and compared with data at different energies. An effective Regge trajectory is calculated using K + p elastic data from 10 to 175 GeV/ c .

Comparison of Neutral Particle Production in 100-GeV/c anti-p p and p p Interactions.

We derive cross-sections for the inclusive productiion in p̄p interactions at 100 GeV /c of π 0 , K S 0 and Λ 0 Λ 0 of 91.5±5.7 mb, 5.2±0.4 mb and 4.8±0.4 mb respectively, which are all higher than pp cross-sections at energy. We find indications that these differences can be attributed to “annihilation” processes.

Measurements of Exclusive Photoproduction Processes at Large Values of t and u from 4-GeV to 7.5-GeV

Exclusive photoproduction cross sections have been measured for the processes γp→π+n, γp→π0p, γp→π−Δ++, γp→ρ0p, γp→K+Λ, and γp→K+Σ0 at large t and u values at several energies for each process between 4 and 7.5 GeV. These measurements taken together with past data taken at small values of t and u provide complete angular distributions. The data show the usual small t and u peaks and a central region in which the cross section decreases approximately as s−7. The results are discussed within the context of parton or constituent models.

We present results from a measurement of the differential cross sections for Σ−p, Ξ−p, and π−p elastic scattering at 23 GeV/c. We have collected samples of 6200 Σ−p events, 67 Ξ−p events, and 30 000 π−p events in the interval 0.10<|t|<0.23 (GeV/c)2.

Inclusive pi- and gamma Production in 24-GeV/c p p Collisions

We report the 24-GeV/c inclusive π− yield near θc.m.=90° for 0.5<~PT≲2.2 GeV/c. No high-PT excess is seen at this energy. In addition we have obtained the inclusive γ-ray yield from a measurement of low-mass e+e− pairs. This yield is compared with that expected from π0-, η-, and ω-meson decay, to provide limits on possible direct photon production.

Measurements on the Differential Cross-Section of the pi0 Photoproduction on Hydrogen

The differential cross section for photoproduction of π° on hydrogen has been measured in a photon energy range of 560-690 MeV and for production angles in the interval 90°-105° in the centre of mass system. The experiment detects the recoil proton and a π°-decay photon in coincidence, using optical spark chambers and a lead glass Cerenkov counter. Presented cross sections, based on 35 000 events recorded on film, are in good agreement with recent phase shift analysis.

Small Angle p p Elastic Scattering at Energies Between 285-MeV and 572-MeV

Differential cross sections for elastic p−p scattering have been measured at 285, 348, 398, 414, 455, 497, 530, and 572 MeV kinetic energy. The experiment was performed at the CERN synchrocyclotron, using multiwire proportional chambers placed directly in a proton beam. Scattering was observed for 1.5°≲θ≲10° in the laboratory system. The ratio αp of the real and imaginary parts of the non-spin-flip nuclear forward amplitude was derived from the interference between the Coulomb and nuclear amplitudes. The values obtained are model-dependent, but in this energy range αp is positive and decreases with energy. Qualitatively good agreement with dispersion-relation predictions is observed.

Coherent Photoproduction of Vector Mesons on Deuterium at 5.5-GeV

Coherent photoproduction of vector mesons ρ0, ω, φ, and ρ′ on deuterium was studied using the SLAC 82-in. bubble chamber exposed to linearly polarized photons at 5.5 GeV. The reaction channel γd→π+π−d was studied in detail. Nine independent density-matrix parameters have been determined from the ρ0 decay distribution. ρ production in this channel was found to proceed almost completely through natural-parity exchange for |t|≤0.25 GeV2 and conserve s-channel c.m. helicity for |t|≤0.15 GeV2. A measurement of differential cross section for this channel has been made.

Elastic and inelastic scattering of 1.044 GeV protons have been studied on isotopically enriched even 40, 42, 44, 48 Ca isotopes and 48 Ti. A spin independent Glauber theory analysis of the elastic scattering allowed the extraction of neutron and nuclear matter densities for these targets.
