The measurement of invariant cross sections for the production of protons by 400 GeV protons from a variety of nuclear targets is described. Results are given for Li6, Be, C, A1, Cu, and Ta at 70°, 90°, 118°, 137° and 160° for detected protons from 0.4 to 1.4 GeV/c. Some angular distributions are given over a wider selection of angles. Data on inclusive jet production in the transverse-momentum (p⊥) range 0-8 GeV/c for 200-GeV/c p, π−, π+, K−, K+, and p¯ incident on a hydrogen target are presented. The jet cross section is fully corrected for losses and biases, and compared with the predictions of a model based on quantum chromodynamics. Both the absolute cross section and the inclusive charged-particle distributions inside and outside the jet are in qualitative agreement with the model.

We present data on dimuon production by 16 GeV π + and π − beams on a Cu target. From the data we evaluate, for π − N collisions, the fraction of dimuon events that originate from the annihilation process q q ̄ → μ + μ − . Using this information the experimentally determined cross section for the process q q ̄ → μ + μ − is observed to be in agreement with the Drell-Yan model over a wide range of incident energies. The observed deviations from exact scaling are of the order predicted by QCD calculations for the Q 2 -dependence of the nucleon and the pion structure function.

Inclusive π 0 production at 90° has been studied at the ISR at s 1 2 = 52.7 and 62.4 GeV over the p T range from 7 to 15 GeV/ c . The two photons from π 0 decay yielded overlapping electromagnetic showers in the liquid-argon-Pb plate calorimeter detector system. Any direct photon production is included in these measurements. For large values of p T , the cross section is observed to decrease with p T more slowly than the p T −8 behaviour which has been observed at lower values of p T .

Average total cross sections are given for neutrino charged current interactions at neutrino energies of 2.87 GeV and 9.05 GeV. The ratios 〈σ〉 〈E〉 are 0.69 ± 0.05 and 0.61 ± 0.06 in units of 10 −38 cm 2 /GeV nucleon, respectively The errors include both statistical and systematic uncertainties.

The inclusive production of Λ , K S 0 , Σ ± (1385) and K ∗± (892) in π − p interactions at 6 GeV/ c has been studied. The observed cross sections are: σ ( Λ )=0.94±0.06 mb, σ (K S 0 )=0.98±0.06 mb, σ ( Σ + (1385))=60±7 μb , σ ( Σ − (1385))=90±9 μ b, σ( K ∗+ (892))=216±28 μ b and σ( K ∗− (892))=41±8 μ b , respectively. The inclusive spectra of these particles are presented as functions of squared transverse momentum and Feynman scaling variable x . The polarization of Λ has also been investigated. It is found from a comparison with higher-energy data that the inclusive cross sections for Σ ± (1385) and the production ratios Σ ± (1385)/ Λ in π − p at 6 GeV/ c have not reached the high-energy limiting values.

The cross section for the K L 0 p elastic scattering has been measured for the first time. The incident momentum and momentum transfer ranges are 3 ⩽ p ⩽ 13 GeV/ c , 0.1 ⩽ | t | ⩽ 1.3 GeV 2 . The results are compared to those of other experiments related to ours by isotopic spin conservation, finding agreement with some and discrepancies with others. The differential cross sections have been parametrized in the form A e bt . The coefficients show little or no dependence on energy, with A ≅ 9.8 mb · GeV −2 and b ≅ 4.7 GeV −2 . The effective linear trajectory has been determined and gives α 0 = 0.95 ± 0.15, α ′ = −0.35 ± 0.48 GeV −2 , in good agreement with dominance by pomeron exchange.
