Differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of negative pions from hydrogen have been measured over a limited range of squared four-momentum transfer (t) in the vicinity of t≃−3 (GeV/c)2 for incident pion momenta of 2.51, 2.76, and 3.01 GeV/c. These measurements confirm the existence of a minimum in the differential cross section in this region of incident momentum and scattering angle. The minimum occurs at a smaller value of t [t≃−2.6 (GeV/c)2] than has been observed at higher momenta.

Phys.Rev.Lett. 22 (1969) 1265-1269, 1969.
Inspire Record 56484 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.21699

The differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of negative pions by deuterons have been measured for 2.01-, 3.77-, and 5.53-GeV/c incident pion momenta, over an interval of the squared four-momentum transfer from -0.25 (GeV/c)2 to ∼-1.0 (GeV/c)2. The results are consistent with calculations based on a Glauber model of the scattering process.

Anti-p-p backward elastic scattering from 0.7 to 2.16 gev/c

Elastic scattering of p¯ on p has been studied for cosθc.m. between -0.88 and -1.0 and Plab(p¯) between 0.70 and 2.16 GeV/c. The momentum dependence of the cross section shows a sharp dip at 0.9 GeV/c and a broad peaking around 1.4 GeV/c. The possibility of the peak resulting from direct formation of boson resonances has been studied. Alternatively, a diffraction model agrees qualitatively with our data and other elastic data at different angles.

Anti-k-neutral and lambda-neutral production in k-minus + p interactions at 7.7 gev/c

This article reports the results of a spark-chamber measurement of the reactions K−+p→K¯0+neutrals and K−+p→Λ0+neutrals with an incident kaon momentum of 7.7 GeV/c. The production cross sections for these reactions are measured to be 800±50 μb and 188±18 μb, respectively. The cross-section distributions d2σdPIIdP⊥ in the center-of-mass system with large momentum transfer are discussed in terms of a fireball model of production.

The cross section for single π0 photoproduction from hydrogen has been measured at nominal angles of 70°, 90°, 130°, and 180° for photon energies 220-400 MeV by detecting the recoil protons. The 180° measurements, taken with a new setup, avoid big corrections present in some of the previously published results. These new data allow a direct comparison with the experiment presented by the Bonn group and with the most recent theoretical predictions.

Pi-minus p elastic scattering at 2.26 gev/c

The elastic scattering of negative pions on protons at 2.26 GeVc has been studied using the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory 72-in. hydrogen-filled bubble chamber. The elastic scattering cross section is found to be 8.91±0.24 mb. The forward diffraction peak is well fitted by an exponential in the square of the four-momentum transfer, and the slope is found to be 8.8±0.1 GeV−2. The differential cross section is parametrized in terms of three models: optical, strong-absorption, and two-slope. It is found that the two-slope model affords the best description of the data and also does very well in predicting the polarization data of other experiments. The best-fit parameters for all three models are given. In addition, the amplitudes associated with the best fits are given for the strong-absorption and the two-slope models.

Proton Compton effect by polarized photons at 90 degrees in the c.m. system in the first resonance region

For the reaction γ+p→γ′+p′ (proton Compton effect), we have measured the ratio dσIIdσ⊥ between the cross sections for linearly polarized photons, using the coherent bremsstrahlung beam of the Frascati electron synchrotron. At 90° in the c.m. system and in the photon energy region 300≤K≤335 MeV, we find dσIIdσ⊥=2.1−0.4+0.5. In the absence of theoretical predictions based on the dispersive theory in this energy region, this result is compared with the values obtained using an isobaric model, taking into account various possible intermediate states.

Pion production and elastic scattering in anti-proton-proton collisions at 6.94 bev/c

We have studied nonstrange p¯−p interactions observed in 7000 pictures of the 80-in. Brookhaven National Laboratory hydrogen bubble chamber exposed to an antiproton beam with a momentum of 6.94 BeVc. The total cross section was measured to be 58.7±2.8 mb, and the elastic interaction cross section 14.2±1.2 mb. The elastic differential cross section for four-momentum transfers (−t)≤0.3 (BeVc)2 is well described by the exponential form dσeldt=(dσdt)t=0ebt, where b=13.1±1.1 (BeVc)−2. The single-pion production cross section is 4.0±0.9 mb. This channel proceeds 70% through resonance formation. N*(1238) isobar and anti-isobar formation dominates pion production in four- and six-pronged events; the double-isobar formation cross section in the final state pπ+p¯π− is 1.35±0.2 mb. Isobar production was observed to be consistent with the predictions of a dominant one-particle-exchange process. The pion-annihilation process, which has a cross section of 25±5 mb, shows substantial pion resonance formation.
