An experiment studying the reaction π+p→Δ++π0π0 using the Argonne National Laboratory 1.5-m streamer chamber combined with a lead-glass hodoscope is described. The data were analyzed in terms of π+π−→π0π0 scattering, and the details of the extrapolation to the pole are discussed. An energy-independent amplitude analysis from threshold to 2.3 GeV is presented. In this analysis the f0(1270), the h0(2040), and a JP=2+ state at 1.8 GeV with a width of 0.280 GeV are observed. The amplitude ambiguity arising from analyses of π+π−→π+π− data in the 1.6-GeV region is resolved. An energy-dependent phase-shift analysis from 1.0 to 1.5 GeV is presented.

The dominant partial waves of the diffractively produced N π system at low Nπ masses (⩽ 1.4 GeV) are determined in the reactions π ± p → π (N π ) at 16 GeV/ c . A satisfactory description of our data can only be obtained by strong contributions of both a 1 2 − S-wave and a 3 2 + P-wave, violating the Gribov-Morrison rule. Spin and parity of the diffractively produced states are found from the interference between diffraction and Δ (1236) production. The interference term is obtained by an isospin analysis.

The reaction γp→; π + π − p in the energy range 4.1 to 6.2 GeV has been studied with a tagged photon beam incident on a liquid hydrogen target in the DESY one-meter streamer chamber. The reaction is analysed in terms of the longitudinal phase space (LPS) method. The one-pion-exchange model for Δ(1236) production and decay is examined. For the diffractive part of the LPS a dual model with pomeron exchange is investigated. In particular, the s -channel helicity conservation dual model of Dewey and Humpert describes the data well.

The production of the f 0 (1270) has been studied in the reaction π − p → π + π − n at 12 and 15 GeV/ c in the momentum transfer range 0.02 to 0.80 GeV 2 . Differential and total cross sections for the reaction π − p → f 0 n have been determined. The f 0 decay density matrix elements have been evaluated requiring all the matrix eigenvalues to be non-negative. The relative unnatural and natural parity exchange contributions to the f 0 production have been studied. The results are compared with a Regge exchange model formulated in terms of the pion and A 2 exchanges including cut contributions.

The reaction K − n → K − π + π − n has been studied in the SLAC 82″ liquid deuterium bubble chamber with a beam momentum of 12 GeV/ c . Although the kinematic fit for this final state has only one constraint, nonetheless a reasonably pure sample has been obtained. The cross section for the reaction is 1.02 ± 0.10 mb. The process K − n → K ∗0 890 Δ − is observed with cross section 36 ± 9 μ b and t -slope of 10 ± 2 (GeV/ c ) −2 . A kaon diffraction dissociation sample has been obtained, although the Q-signal is not so strong as in experiments with proton targets. Neutron dissociation into n π + π − is also observed with similar properties to those of proton dissociation into p π + π − , but with a broader t -distribution.

We have applied the Estabrooks and Martin analysis to a sample of 5279 events produced in the reactionπ+n ⇒ pρ0, and have made a density matrix study, including a positivity analysis, of theJ = 0, 1, 2density matrix in the f0 region, using a sample of 2385 events.

A two-arm spectrometer for simple event topologies is described. Its main characteristics are: (i) large solid-angle acceptance for the forward emitted particles, owing to the absence of magnetic-momentum analysis; (ii) high-resolution time-of-flight measurement of the recoil proton, in the momentum-transfer range 0.05 < | t | < 1 (GeV/ c ) 2 ; (iii) high data-taking rate and on-line pattern recognition.

We compare production of the low mass K π -resonances by K + and K − beams in the non-charge-exchange reactions K ± p → K 0 s π ± p at 10 GeV/ c . High statistics data, obtained with the same apparatus, allow extraction of the K ∗ (890) and K ∗ (1420) production amplitudes corresponding to unnatural and natural parity exchange in the t -channel. The NPE-part dominates in both charge states. Its t -dependence shows a strong crossover at t ≈ −0.3 (GeV/ c ) 2 for the K ∗ (1420). For the K ∗ (890) the crossover is weaker but it occurs at the same value of t . This behaviour can be explained by pomeron, f and ω Regge exchange contributions to the NPE amplitude. The UPE amplitudes agree, both in normalisation and t -dependence, with the expectations of π and B exchange as isolated from data for the charge exchange reaction K − p → (K − π + )n.

We present the observation of a J P = 4 + , I G = 1 − state in the reaction π − p → K S 0 K − p at 10 GeV/ c measured with a non-magnetic spectrometer at the CERN proton synchrotron (PS). A spherical harmonics moments analysis of the K S 0 K − system shows a signal at ∼ 1900 MeV in the 〈 Y 7 0 〉 and 〈 Y 8 0 〉 moments, indicative of a spin 4.
