Measurements are presented of electroweak boson production using data from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV. The analysis is based on an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb$^{−1}$ recorded with the LHCb detector. The bosons are identified in the W → μν and Z → μ$^{+}$ μ$^{−}$ decay channels. The cross-sections are measured for muons in the pseudorapidity range 2.0 < η < 4.5, with transverse momenta p$_{T}$ > 20 GeV/c and, in the case of the Z boson, a dimuon mass within $ 60 < {M}_{\mu }{{{}_{{}^{+}}}_{\mu}}_{{}^{-}}<120 $ GeV/c$^{2}$. The results are $ {\sigma}_W{{}_{{}^{+}}}_{\to \mu }{{}_{{}^{+}}}_{\nu }=1093.6\pm 2.1\pm 7.2\pm 10.9\pm 12.7\ \mathrm{p}\mathrm{b}, $ $ {\sigma}_W{{}_{{}^{-}}}_{\to \mu }{{}_{{}^{-}}}_{\overline{\nu}}=818.4\pm 1.9\pm 5.0\pm 7.0\pm 9.5\ \mathrm{p}\mathrm{b}, $ $ {\sigma}_{\mathrm{Z}\to \mu }{{{}_{{}^{+}}}_{\mu}}_{{}^{-}}=95.0\pm 0.3\pm 0.7\pm 1.1\pm 1.1\ \mathrm{p}\mathrm{b}, $ $ {\sigma}_{Z\to \mu }{{{}_{{}^{+}}}_{\mu}}_{{}^{-}}=95.0\pm 0.3\pm 0.7\pm 1.1\pm 1.1\ \mathrm{p}\mathrm{b}, $ where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second are systematic, the third are due to the knowledge of the LHC beam energy and the fourth are due to the luminosity determination. The evolution of the W and Z boson cross-sections with centre-of-mass energy is studied using previously reported measurements with 1.0 fb$^{−1}$ of data at 7 TeV. Differential distributions are also presented. Results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

The product of the differential production cross-section and the branching fraction of the decay is measured as a function of the beauty hadron transverse momentum, p(T), and rapidity, y. The kinematic region of the measurements is p(T) < 20 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5. The measurements use a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb(−)(1) collected by the LHCb detector in pp collisions at centre-of-mass energies in 2011 and in 2012. Based on previous LHCb results of the fragmentation fraction ratio the branching fraction of the decay is measured to bewhere the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, the third is due to the uncertainty on the branching fraction of the decay B̅(0) → J/ψK̅*(892)(0), and the fourth is due to the knowledge of . The sum of the asymmetries in the production and decay between and is also measured as a function of p(T) and y. The previously published branching fraction of , relative to that of , is updated. The branching fractions of are determined.

The associated production of a W boson with a jet originating from either a light parton or heavy-flavor quark is studied in the forward region using proton-proton collisions. The analysis uses data corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1.0 and 2.0  fb-1 collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, respectively. The W bosons are reconstructed using the W→μν decay and muons with a transverse momentum, pT, larger than 20 GeV in the pseudorapidity range 2.0<η<4.5. The partons are reconstructed as jets with pT>20  GeV and 2.2<η<4.2. The sum of the muon and jet momenta must satisfy pT>20  GeV. The fraction of W+jet events that originate from beauty and charm quarks is measured, along with the charge asymmetries of the W+b and W+c production cross sections. The ratio of the W+jet to Z+jet production cross sections is also measured using the Z→μμ decay. All results are in agreement with Standard Model predictions.

1 data table

Summary of the results. All results are reported within a fiducial region that requires a jet with $p_\rm{T} > 20$ GeV in the pseudorapidity range $2.2 < \eta < 4.2$, a muon with $p_\rm{T} > 20$ GeV in the pseudorapidity range $2.0 < \eta < 4.5$, $p_\rm{T}(\mu+j) > 20$ GeV, and $\Delta R(\mu, j) > 0.5$. For $Z+$jet events both muons must fulfill the muon requirements and $60 < M(\mu\mu) < 120$ GeV; the $Z+$jet fiducial region does not require $p_\rm{T}(\mu+j) > 20$ GeV.

A measurement of the cross-section for Z-boson production in the forward region of pp collisions at 8 TeV centre-of-mass energy is presented. The measurement is based on a sample of Z → e$^{+}$e$^{−}$ decays reconstructed using the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb$^{−1}$. The acceptance is defined by the requirements 2.0 < η < 4.5 and p$_{T}$ > 20 GeV for the pseudorapidities and transverse momenta of the leptons. Their invariant mass is required to lie in the range 60-120 GeV. The cross-section is determined to be $ \sigma \left(\mathrm{pp}\to \mathrm{Z}\to {\mathrm{e}}^{+}{\mathrm{e}}^{-}\right)=93.81\pm 0.41\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)\pm 1.48\left(\mathrm{syst}\right)\pm 1.14\left(\mathrm{lumi}\right)\mathrm{p}\mathrm{b}, $ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second reflects all systematic effects apart from that arising from the luminosity, which is given as the third uncertainty. Differential cross-sections are presented as functions of the Z-boson rapidity and of the angular variable ϕ$^{∗}$, which is related to the Z-boson transverse momentum.

Production of $\Upsilon$ mesons in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5 \mathrm{TeV}$ is studied with the LHCb detector. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.6 \mathrm{nb}^{-1}$. The $\Upsilon$ mesons of transverse momenta up to $15 \mathrm{GeV}/c$ are reconstructed in the dimuon decay mode. The rapidity coverage in the centre-of-mass system is $1.5 < y < 4.0$ (forward region) and $-5.0 < y < -2.5$ (backward region). The forward-backward production ratio and the nuclear modification factor for $\Upsilon(1S)$ mesons are determined. The data are compatible with the predictions for a suppression of $\Upsilon(1S)$ production with respect to proton-proton collisions in the forward region, and an enhancement in the backward region. The suppression is found to be smaller than in the case of prompt $J/\psi$ mesons.

The fraction of \Y1S originating from \chib1P decays in the \Y1S transverse momentum range $6 < \pt^{\Y1S} < 15\gevc$ and rapidity range $2.0 < y^{\Y1S} < 4.5$ is measured to be $(20.7\pm 5.7\pm 2.1^{+2.7}_{-5.4})%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the last gives the range of the result due to the unknown \Y1S and \chib1P polarizations.

Fraction of $\Upsilon(1S)$ originating from $\chi_b(1P)$ decays for different $p_T(\Upsilon(1S))$ bins, assuming production of unpolarized $\Upsilon(1S)$ and $\chi_b(1P)$ mesons. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the systematic uncertainty ($10.21\%$) and the third uncertainty is due to the unknown $\Upsilon(1S)$ and $\chi_b(1P)$ polarizations ($ _{-26}^{+13}\%$). The second and third uncertainties are considerent constant over the measurement fiducial phase-space.

The prompt production of charmonium $\chi_{c}$ and $J/\psi$ states is studied in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The $\chi_{c}$ and $J/\psi$ mesons are identified through their decays $\chi_{c}\rightarrow J/\psi \gamma$ and $J/\psi\rightarrow \mu^+\mu^-$ using 36 pb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the LHCb detector in 2010. The ratio of the prompt production cross-sections for $\chi_{c}$ and $J/\psi$, $\sigma (\chi_{c}\rightarrow J/\psi \gamma)/ \sigma (J/\psi)$, is determined as a function of the $J/\psi$ transverse momentum in the range $2 < p_{\mathrm T}^{J/\psi} < 15$ GeV/$c$. The results are in excellent agreement with next-to-leading order non-relativistic expectations and show a significant discrepancy compared with the colour singlet model prediction at leading order, especially in the low $p_{\mathrm T}^{J/\psi}$ region.

The prompt production of the charmonium $\chi_{c1}$ and $\chi_{c2}$ mesons has been studied in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV. The $\chi_c$ mesons are identified through their decays $\chi_c\to J/\psi\,\gamma$ with $J/\psi \to \mu^+ \mu^-$ using 36 $\mathrm{pb^{-1}}$ of data collected by the LHCb detector in 2010. The ratio of the prompt production cross-sections for the two $\chi_c$ spin states, $\sigma(\chi_{c2})/\sigma(\chi_{c1})$, has been determined as a function of the $J/\psi$ transverse momentum, $p_{\mathrm{T}}^{J/\psi}$, in the range from 2 to 15 GeV/$c$. The results are in agreement with the next-to-leading order non-relativistic QCD model at high $p_{\mathrm{T}}^{J/\psi}$ and lie consistently above the pure leading-order colour singlet prediction.

The production of Upsilon(1S), Upsilon(2S) and Upsilon(3S) mesons in proton-proton collisions at the centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s)=7 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector. The analysis is based on a data sample of 25 pb-1 collected at the Large Hadron Collider. The Upsilon mesons are reconstructed in the decay mode Upsilon -> mu+ mu- and the signal yields are extracted from a fit to the mu+ mu- invariant mass distributions. The production of $J/\psi$ mesons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$= 7 tev is studied with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The differential cross-section for prompt $J/\psi$ production is measured as a function of the $J/\psi$ transverse momentum p_{\rm T}\ and rapidity $y$ in the fiducial region $p_{\rm T}\in[0;14]$ GeV/c and $y\in[2.0;4.5]$. The differential cross-section and fraction of \j psi\ from $b$-hadron decays are also measured in the same p_{\rm T}\ and $y$ range s. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminos ity of 5.2 pb$^{-1}$. The measured cross-sections integrated over the fiducial region are $10.52\pm 0. 04\pm 1.40^{+1.64}_{-2.20}\mu b$ for $\mathrm{prompt}~J/\psi$ production and $1.14 \pm 0. 01\pm 0.16 \mu b$ for $J/\psi$ from $b$-hadron decays, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The $\mathrm{prompt}~J/\psi$ production cross-section is obtained assuming no $J/\psi$ polarisation and the third error indicates the acceptance uncertainty due to this assumption.
