Measurement of prompt and nonprompt charmonium suppression in PbPb collisions at 5.02 TeV

The nuclear modification factors of J/$\psi$ and $\psi$(2S) mesons are measured in PbPb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} =$ 5.02 TeV. The analysis is based on PbPb and pp data samples collected by CMS at the LHC in 2015, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 464 $\mu$b$^{-1}$ and 28 pb$^{-1}$, respectively. The measurements are performed in the dimuon rapidity range of $|y| <$ 2.4 as a function of centrality, rapidity, and transverse momentum (p$_\mathrm{T}$) from p$_\mathrm{T}=$ 3 GeV/$c$ in the most forward region and up to 50 GeV/$c$. Both prompt and nonprompt (coming from b hadron decays) mesons are observed to be increasingly suppressed with centrality, with a magnitude similar to the one observed at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=$ 2.76 TeV for the two J/$\psi$ meson components. No dependence on rapidity is observed for either prompt or nonprompt J/$\psi$ mesons. An indication of a lower prompt J/$\psi$ meson suppression at high p$_\mathrm{T}$ is seen with respect to that observed at intermediate p$_\mathrm{T}$. The prompt $\psi$(2S) meson yield is found to be more suppressed than that of the prompt J/$\psi$ mesons in the entire p$_\mathrm{T}$ range.

The polarization of the $\Upsilon(1S)$, $\Upsilon(2S)$ and $\Upsilon(3S) $mesons, produced in $pp$ collisions at centre-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$=7 and 8TeV, is measured using data samples collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1 and 2fb$^{-1}$, respectively. The measurements are performed in three polarization frames, using $\Upsilon\to\mu^+\mu^-$ decays in the kinematic region of the transverse momentum $p_{T}(\Upsilon)<30GeV/c$, and rapidity $2.2<y(\Upsilon)<4.5$. No large polarization is observed.

Measurement of forward $J/\psi$ production cross-sections in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

The production of J/ψ mesons in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV is studied with the LHCb detector. Cross-section measurements are performed as a function of the transverse momentum p$_{T}$ and the rapidity y of the J/ψ meson in the region p$_{T}$ < 14 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5, for both prompt J/ψ mesons and J/ψ mesons from b-hadron decays. The production cross-sections integrated over the kinematic coverage are 15.30 ± 0.03 ± 0.86 μb for prompt J/ψ and 2.34 ± 0.01 ± 0.13 μb for J/ψ from b-hadron decays, assuming zero polarization of the J/ψ meson. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The cross-section reported for J/ψ mesons from b-hadron decays is used to extrapolate to a total $ b\overline{b} $ cross-section. The ratios of the cross-sections with respect to $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV are also determined.

Suppression of $\Upsilon(1S)$, $\Upsilon(2S)$ and $\Upsilon(3S)$ production in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV

The production yields of Upsilon(1S), Upsilon(2S), and Upsilon(3S) quarkonium states are measured through their decays into muon pairs in the CMS detector, in PbPb and pp collisions at the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 2.76 TeV. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of 166 inverse microbarns and 5.4 inverse picobarns for PbPb and pp collisions, respectively. Differential production cross sections are reported as functions of Upsilon rapidity $y$ up to 2.4, and transverse momentum pt up to 20 GeV/c. A strong centrality-dependent suppression is observed in PbPb relative to pp collisions, by factors of up to ~2 and 8, for the Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) states, respectively. No significant dependence of this suppression is observed as a function of y or pt. The Upsilon(3S) state is not observed in PbPb collisions, which corresponds to a suppression for the centrality-integrated data by at least a factor of ~7 at a 95% confidence level. The observed suppression is in agreement with theoretical scenarios modeling the sequential melting of quarkonium states in a quark gluon plasma.

Search for the dimuon decay of the Higgs boson in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for the dimuon decay of the Higgs boson was performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1  fb-1 collected with the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at s=13  TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess is observed above the expected background. The observed (expected) upper limit on the cross section times branching ratio is 3.0 (3.1) times the Standard Model prediction at the 95% confidence level for a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV. When combined with the pp collision data at s=7  TeV and s=8  TeV, the observed (expected) upper limit is 2.8 (2.9) times the Standard Model prediction.

The full widths at half maximum (FWHM) of the signal $m_{μμ}$ distributions are also shown. In each category, the event yields are counted within an $m_{μμ}$ interval, which is centered at the simulated signal peak and contains 90% of the expected signal events. The expected signal event yields are normalized to $36.1 fb^-1$. The background in each category is normalized to the observed data yield, while the relative fractions between the different processes are fixed to the SM predictions.

Final COMPASS results on the deuteron spin-dependent structure function $g_1^{\rm d}$ and the Bjorken sum rule

Final results are presented from the inclusive measurement of deep-inelastic polarised-muon scattering on longitudinally polarised deuterons using a 6 LiD target. The data were taken at 160 GeV beam energy and the results are shown for the kinematic range 1(GeV/c)2<Q2<100(GeV/c)2 in photon virtuality, 0.004<x<0.7 in the Bjorken scaling variable and W>4GeV/c2 in the mass of the hadronic final state. The deuteron double-spin asymmetry A1d and the deuteron longitudinal-spin structure function g1d are presented in bins of x and Q2 . Towards lowest accessible values of x , g1d decreases and becomes consistent with zero within uncertainties. The presented final g1d values together with the recently published final g1p values of COMPASS are used to again evaluate the Bjorken sum rule and perform the QCD fit to the g1 world data at next-to-leading order of the strong coupling constant. In both cases, changes in central values of the resulting numbers are well within statistical uncertainties. The flavour-singlet axial charge a0 , which is identified in the MS‾ renormalisation scheme with the total contribution of quark helicities to the nucleon spin, is extracted at next-to-leading order accuracy from only the COMPASS deuteron data: a0(Q2=3(GeV/c)2)=0.32±0.02stat±0.04syst±0.05evol . Together with the recent results on the proton spin structure function g1p , the results on g1d constitute the COMPASS legacy on the measurements of g1 through inclusive spin-dependent deep inelastic scattering.

The relative modification of the prompt psi(2S) and J/psi yields from pp to PbPb collisions, at the center of mass energy of 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair, is presented. The analysis is based on pp and PbPb data samples collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2015, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 28.0 inverse picobarns and 464 inverse microbarns, respectively. The double ratio of measured yields of prompt charmonia reconstructed through their decays into muon pairs, (N[psi(2S)]/N[J/psi])[PbPb]/ (N[psi(2S)]/N[J/psi])[pp], is determined as a function of PbPb collision centrality and charmonium transverse momentum pt, in two kinematic intervals: abs(y) < 1.6 covering 6.5 < pt < 30GeV/c and 1.6 < abs(y) < 2.4 covering 3 <pt< 30GeV/c. The centrality-integrated double ratios are 0.36 +/- 0.08 (stat) +/-0.05 (syst) in the first interval and 0.24 +/- 0.22 (stat) +/- 0.09 (syst) in the second. The double ratio is lower than unity in all the measured bins, suggesting that the psi(2S) yield is more suppressed than the J/psi yield in the explored phase space.

Central collisions of O16 nuclei with the Ag107 and Br80 nuclei in nuclear emulsion at 14.6, 60, and 200 GeV/nucleon are compared with proton-emulsion data at equivalent energies. The multiplicities of produced charged secondaries are consistent with the predictions of superposition models. At 200 GeV/nucleon the central particle pseudorapidity density is 58±2 for those events with multiplicities exceeding 200 particles.

The ALICE Collaboration has studied J/psi production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=7 TeV at the LHC through its muon pair decay. The polar and azimuthal angle distributions of the decay muons were measured, and results on the J/$\psi$ polarization parameters lambda_theta and lambda_phi were obtained. The study was performed in the kinematic region 2.5 < y < 4, 2 < $p_t$ < 8 GeV/c, in the helicity and Collins-Soper reference frames. The results for lambda_theta in the helicity frame show a longitudinal polarization at low $p_t$, vanishing with increasing transverse momentum. All the other polarization parameters are consistent with zero, within uncertainties.

The ALICE Collaboration has measured inclusive J/psi production in pp collisions at a center of mass energy sqrt(s)=2.76 TeV at the LHC. The results presented in this Letter refer to the rapidity ranges |y|<0.9 and 2.5<y<4 and have been obtained by measuring the electron and muon pair decay channels, respectively. The integrated luminosities for the two channels are L^e_int=1.1 nb^-1 and L^mu_int=19.9 nb^-1, and the corresponding signal statistics are N_J/psi^e+e-=59 +/- 14 and N_J/psi^mu+mu-=1364 +/- 53. We present dsigma_J/psi/dy for the two rapidity regions under study and, for the forward-y range, d^2sigma_J/psi/dydp_t in the transverse momentum domain 0<p_t<8 GeV/c. The results are compared with previously published results at sqrt(s)=7 TeV and with theoretical calculations.

Measurement of the exclusive Υ production cross-section in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=7 $ TeV and 8 TeV

A study is presented of central exclusive production of Υ(nS) states, where the Υ(nS) resonances decay to the μ$^{+}$ μ$^{−}$ final state, using pp collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment. The cross-section is measured in the rapidity range 2 < y(Υ) < 4.5 where the muons are reconstructed in the pseudorapidity range 2 < η(μ$^{±}$) < 4.5. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 fb$^{−1}$ and was collected at centre-of-mass energies of 7 TeV and 8 TeV. The measured Υ(1S) and Υ(2S) production cross-sections are $ \sigma \left( pp\to pY(1S)p\right)=9.0\pm 2.1\pm 1.7\kern0.5em \mathrm{p}\mathrm{b}\kern0.5em \mathrm{and}\kern0.5em \sigma \left( pp\to pY(2S)p\right)=1.3\pm 0.8\pm 0.3\kern0.5em \mathrm{p}\mathrm{b}, $ where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The Υ(1S) crosssection is also measured as a function of rapidity and is found to be in good agreement with Standard Model predictions. An upper limit is set at 3.4 pb at the 95% confidence level for the exclusive Υ(3S) production cross-section, including possible contamination from χ$_{b}$ (3P ) → Υ(3S)γ decays.

Inclusive quarkonium production at forward rapidity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV

We report on the inclusive production cross sections of ${\mathrm{J}/\psi }$ , ${\psi (\mathrm{2S})}$ , $\mathrm{\Upsilon }$ (1S), $\mathrm{\Upsilon }$ (2S) and $\mathrm{\Upsilon }$ (3S), measured at forward rapidity with the ALICE detector in $\mathrm{pp}$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=8$  TeV. The analysis is based on data collected at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.23 pb$^{-1}$ . Quarkonia are reconstructed in the dimuon-decay channel. The differential production cross sections are measured as a function of the transverse momentum ${p_\mathrm{T}}$ and rapidity y, over the ${p_\mathrm{T}}$ ranges $0<{p_\mathrm{T}}<20$  GeV/c for ${\mathrm{J}/\psi }$ , $0<{p_\mathrm{T}}<12$  GeV/c for all other resonances, and for $2.5<y<4$ . The cross sections, integrated over ${p_\mathrm{T}}$ and y, and assuming unpolarized quarkonia, are $\sigma _{{\mathrm{J}/\psi }} = 8.98\pm 0.04\pm 0.82$   $\upmu $ b, $\sigma _{{\psi (\mathrm{2S})}} = 1.23\pm 0.08\pm 0.22$   $\upmu $ b, $\sigma _{\mathrm{\Upsilon }\mathrm{(1S)}} = 71\pm 6\pm 7$  nb, $\sigma _{\mathrm{\Upsilon }\mathrm{(2S)}} = 26\pm 5\pm 4$  nb and $\sigma _{\mathrm{\Upsilon }\mathrm{(3S)}} = 9\pm 4\pm 1$  nb, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second one is systematic. These values agree, within at most $1.4\sigma $ , with measurements performed by the LHCb collaboration in the same rapidity range.

Measurement of forward W and Z boson production in $pp$ collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV

Measurements are presented of electroweak boson production using data from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV. The analysis is based on an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb$^{−1}$ recorded with the LHCb detector. The bosons are identified in the W → μν and Z → μ$^{+}$ μ$^{−}$ decay channels. The cross-sections are measured for muons in the pseudorapidity range 2.0 < η < 4.5, with transverse momenta p$_{T}$ > 20 GeV/c and, in the case of the Z boson, a dimuon mass within $ 60 < {M}_{\mu }{{{}_{{}^{+}}}_{\mu}}_{{}^{-}}<120 $ GeV/c$^{2}$. The results are $ {\sigma}_W{{}_{{}^{+}}}_{\to \mu }{{}_{{}^{+}}}_{\nu }=1093.6\pm 2.1\pm 7.2\pm 10.9\pm 12.7\ \mathrm{p}\mathrm{b}, $ $ {\sigma}_W{{}_{{}^{-}}}_{\to \mu }{{}_{{}^{-}}}_{\overline{\nu}}=818.4\pm 1.9\pm 5.0\pm 7.0\pm 9.5\ \mathrm{p}\mathrm{b}, $ $ {\sigma}_{\mathrm{Z}\to \mu }{{{}_{{}^{+}}}_{\mu}}_{{}^{-}}=95.0\pm 0.3\pm 0.7\pm 1.1\pm 1.1\ \mathrm{p}\mathrm{b}, $ $ {\sigma}_{Z\to \mu }{{{}_{{}^{+}}}_{\mu}}_{{}^{-}}=95.0\pm 0.3\pm 0.7\pm 1.1\pm 1.1\ \mathrm{p}\mathrm{b}, $ where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second are systematic, the third are due to the knowledge of the LHC beam energy and the fourth are due to the luminosity determination. The evolution of the W and Z boson cross-sections with centre-of-mass energy is studied using previously reported measurements with 1.0 fb$^{−1}$ of data at 7 TeV. Differential distributions are also presented. Results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.
