We present a new determination of the nonsinglet structure function ${\mathit{F}}_{2}^{\mathit{p}}$ - ${\mathit{F}}_{2}^{\mathit{n}}$ at ${\mathit{Q}}^{2}$=4 ${\mathrm{GeV}}^{2}$ using recently measured values of ${\mathit{F}}_{2}^{\mathit{d}}$ and ${\mathit{F}}_{2}^{\mathit{n}}$/${\mathit{F}}_{2}^{\mathit{p}}$. A new evaluation of the Gottfried sum is given, which remains below the simple quark-parton model value of 1/3.
Errors of F2(D) are the estimated total uncertainties and those on the ratio and difference are statistical only.
Values of the Gottfried Sum Rule integral (GS) defined as the integral between X(C=MIN) and X = 0.8 of (F2(P)-F2(N))DX/X.

We present the final results of the spin asymmetries A1 and the spin structure functions g1 of the proton and the deuteron in the kinematic range 0.0008<x<0.7 and 0.2<Q2<100GeV2. For the determination of A1, in addition to the usual method which employs inclusive scattering events and includes a large radiative background at low x, we use a new method which minimizes the radiative background by selecting events with at least one hadron as well as a muon in the final state. We find that this hadron method gives smaller errors for x<0.02, so it is combined with the usual method to provide the optimal set of results.

We present a next-to-leading order QCD analysis of the presently available data on the spin structure function g1 including the final data from the Spin Muon Collaboration. We present results for the first moments of the proton, deuteron, and neutron structure functions, and determine singlet and nonsinglet parton distributions in two factorization schemes. We also test the Bjorken sum rule and find agreement with the theoretical prediction at the level of 10%.
The second systematic (DSYS) error is due to QCD evolution.
First moments of the fitted function G1 evaluated on unmeasured X regions. Total uncertainties due to experimental systematics and theoretical sourc es in the QCD evolution.
First moment of fitted G1 evaluated on the whole X region.
We measured the spin asymmetry in the scattering of 100 GeV longitudinally-polarized muons on transversely polarized protons. The asymmetry was found to be compatible with zero in the kinematic range $0.006<x<0.6$, $1<Q~2<30\,\mbox{GeV}~2$. {}From this result we derive the upper limits for the virtual photon--proton asymmetry $A_2$, and for the spin structure function $g_2$. For $x<0.15$, $A_2$ is significantly smaller than its positivity limit $\sqrt{R}$.

Nucleon spin structure function g2.
: We have measured the spin-dependent structure function $g_1~p$ of the proton in deep inelastic scattering of polarized muons off polarized protons, in the kinematic range $0.003<x<0.7$ and $1\,\mbox{GeV}~2<Q~2<60\,\mbox{GeV}~2$. Its first moment, $\int_0~1 g_1~p(x) dx $, is found to be $0.136 \pm 0.011\,(\mbox{stat.})\pm 0.011\,(\mbox{syst.})$ at $Q~2=10\,\mbox{GeV}~2$. This value is smaller than the prediction of the Ellis--Jaffe sum rule by two standard deviations, and is consistent with previous measurements. A combined analysis of all available proton, deuteron and neutron data confirms the Bjorken sum rule to within $10\%$ of the theoretical value.
Results on the virtual photon proton asymmetry.
Results on the spin structure function of the proton.
Data for g1 at fixed Q**2 = 10 GeV (assuming no Q**2 dependence of A1).
Results are presented on the ratio of neutron and proton structure functions, F 2 n / F 2 p , deduced from deep inelastic scattering of muon from hydrogen and deuterium. The data, which were obtained at the CERN muon beam at 90 and 280 GeV incident energy, cover the kinematic range x = 0.002−0.80 and Q 2 = 0.1−190 GeV 2 . The measured structure function ratios have small statistical and systematic errors, particularly at small and intermediate x . The observed Q 2 dependence in the range x = 0.1−0.4 is stronger than predicted by perturbative QCD. From the present data together with results from other experiments it is suggested that the twist-four coefficient for the proton is smaller than that for the neutron for x larger than 0.2.

Merged 90 and 280 GeV data.
Experimental results obtained at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron on the structure-function ratio F2n/F2p in the kinematic range 0.004<x<0.8 and 0.4<Q2<190 GeV2, together with the structure function F2d determined from a fit to published data, are used to derive the difference F2p(x)-F2n(x). The value of the Gottfried sum F(F2p-F2n)dx/x=0.240±0.016 is below the quark-parton-model expectation of 1/3.

The spin asymmetry in deep inelastic scattering of longitudinally polarised muons by longitudinally polarised protons has been measured in the range 0.01<×<0.7. The spin dependent structure function g 1 ( x ) for the proton has been determined and, combining the data with earlier SLAC measurements, its integral over x found to be 0.126±0.010(stat.)±0.015(syst.), in disagreement with the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule. Assuming the validity of the Biorken sum rule, this result implies a significant negative value for the integral of g 1 for the neutron. These integrals lead to the conclusion, in the naïve quark parton model, that the total quark spin constitutes a rather small fraction of the spin of the nucleon. Results are also presented on the asymmetries in inclusive hadron production which are consistent with the above picture.

The energy distribution of inclusive hadrons produced by 280 GeV muons on hydrogen and deuterium targets are compared. The sum of the scaled energy distributions of the positive and negative hadrons is found to be the same for the two targets. The difference of these distributions is observed to factorise inx andz and thez-dependence is found to be independent of the target type and have a form (1−z)2.1±0.2. The net charge of the hadronic jet is positive at highx even in the case when the scattering takes place on the neutron. These results are in good agreement with the expectations of the Quark Parton Model.

The spin asymmetry in deep inelastic scattering of longitudinally polarised muons by longitudinally polarised protons has been measured over a large x range (0.01< x <0.7). The spin-dependent structure function g 1 ( x ) for the proton has been determined and its integral over x found to be 0.114±0.012±0.026, in disagreement with the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule. Assuming the validity of the Bjorken sum rule, this result implies a significant negative value for the integral of g 1 for the neutron. These values for the integrals of g 1 lead to the conclusion that the total quark spin constitutes a rather small fraction of the spin of the nucleon.
