We observe a narrow resonance in the reaction e + e − → hadrons using the DASP detector at the DORIS storage ring. The mass is found to be (9.46 ± 0.01) GeV and the observed width is compatible with the storage ring resolution of ±8 MeV. The energy-integrated cross section results in an electronic width Γ ee = (1.3 ± 0.4) keV.
VISIBLE HADRONIC TOTAL CROSS SECTION.
An experiment using the PLUTO detector has observed the formation of a narrow, high mass, resonance in e + e − annihilations at the DORIS storage ring. The mass is determined to be 9.46±0.01 GeV which is consistent with that of the Upsilon. The gaussian width σ is observed as 8±1 MeV and is equal to the DORIS energy resolution. This suggests that the resonance is a bound state of a new heavy quark-antiquark pair. An electronic width Γ ee =1.3±0.4 keV was obtained. In standard theoretical models, this favors a quark charge assignment of 1 3 .

The pion form factor is measured in the reaction e + e − → π + π − for center of mass energies in the range 480–1100 MeV. Our results are first analysed in terms of the conventional Vector Meson Dominance formalism, and then taking into account the ωπ inelastic channel. The result of this later formalism is a pion form factor ( F π ) which fits quite well all the existing data on F π both in the timelike and spacelike regions, and pion mean square radius of 〈 r π 2 〉 = 0.460 ± 0.011 fm 2 or 〈r π 2 〉 1 2 = 0.678 ± 0.008 fm .

Measurements of the photoproduction processes γρ→ρ+n and γρ→ρ-Δ++ (1236) are reported in the energy range 2.8 to 4.8 GeV. The data show shrinkage of the differential cross section in this energy region for the process γρ→ρ-Δ++ (1236); no shrinkage is observed for the ρ+n process. The energy dependences of the ρ+n and ρ-Δ++ (1236) total cross sections are much steeper than current model prediction. The ρ spin density matrices for each process are also presented.

From a muon-proton scattering experiment with a streamer chamber at the Stanford Linear Accelerator we present results in the ranges 0.3<Q2<4.7 GeV2 and 1.7<W<4.7 GeV for the reactions μ+p→μpV where V is a vector meson (ρ0, ω, or φ). It is shown that in ρ production the skewing parameter and the longitudinal-transverse ratio change significantly as Q2 increases above 1 GeV2. The cross section for ρ0 production as a function of Q2 falls below the vector-meson-dominance prediction. The ratio of the cross section for exclusive vector-meson production to the total cross section falls by a factor of 10 between photoproduction and a Q2 of 2 GeV2, yet the ratio of ω to ρ production remains constant at the photoproduction value out to Q2>2 GeV2.

The KS0KS0 system produced in the reaction π−p→nKS0KS0 at 6.0 and 7 0 GeV/c has been studied utilizing the ANL 1.5-m streamer-chamber facility. A 400 000-photograph exposure yielded 5096 unweighted nKS0KS0 events. The cross section for this reaction was determined to be 9.6 ± 1.3 μb at 6.0 GeV/c and 8.7 ± 1.1 μb at 7.0 GeV/c. The decay angular distributions were parametrized in terms of moments of the spherical harmonics. The 〈Y40〉 moment was fitted to interfering Breit-Wigner amplitudes for the f and f′ mesons. Using this fit, the branching ratio R=Γ(f→KK¯)Γ(f→all) was found to be (2.3 ± 0.8)%. An energy-independent production-amplitude analysis revealed an enhancement in the S-wave amplitude near 1300 MeV. The properties of the S-wave enhancement are discussed and compared with those observed in other recent experiments. Extrapolated cross sections for the reaction ππ→KS0KS0 are presented. We find a cross section considerably below the S-wave unitarity limit in the S* region.

We have measured inclusive γ and π0 production in multiprong events produced by e+e− annihilation in the center-of-mass energy range 4.9 to 7.4 GeV. We present the results obtained with the magnetic detector DM1 at the Orsay storage ring ACO for the reaction e + e − → π + π − π 0 from 483 to 1100 MeV in the center of mass. Our data show without ambiguity an interference effect between the ω and φ mesons, which corresponds to a negative coupling constant product ratio Re( g γω g ω →3 π / g γφ g φ →3 π ) ; however our measurements above the φ, performed using kinematical analysis, can only be explained by a higher energy contribution. In addition, the parameters of the ω have been obtained with an improved accuracy compared to other experiments, and particularly the branching ratio B ω →e + e − = (6.75±0.69) × 10 −5 . We confirm that the reaction e + e − → π + π − π 0 proceeds essentially via a quasi-two-body state ϱπ , at the energy of the φ.

We have measured in a single experimental setup, the differential cross sections and decay angular distributions of the Y ∗ (1385) produced in the two line-reversed reactions: π + p → K + Y ∗+ (1385) (279 events/ω b ) and K − p → π − Y ∗+ (1385) (190 events/ωb) at 11.5 GeV/ c . The data have been derived from a triggered bubble-chamber experiment using the SLAC Hybrid Facility. We find the differential cross sections and Y ∗ polarizations for the two reactions to be in agreement with exchange-degeneracy predictions, if kinematic differences are taken into account. The Stodolsky-Sakurai and additive quark model predictions are in agreement with the main features of the decay angular distributions of the Y ∗ (1385), except for small violations at low momentum transfer, which can be associated with a finite helicity non-flip contribution in the forward direction.

We present the results of a measurement of the cross section oof the reaction e + e − → π + π − π + π − from 890 to 1100 MeV in the center of mass, obtained with a magnetic detector at the Orsay Storage Ring ACO. With respect to previous experiments, the present one offers the possibility of reconstructing events with at least one constraint and his improved statistics. We find that our measurement of the cross section for e + e − → π + π − π + π − is compatible with quasi two-body production of π A 1 ( m A1 = 1.1 GeV, Γ A1 ∼ 0.2−0.3 GeV), through the ϱ and ϱ′(1600) intermediate states. We were able to states. We were able to determine the cross section of this reaction at the energy of the φ meson and consequently an upper limit on the branching ratio of φ → π + π − π + π − .

The invariant mass spectrum of neutral meson states from π − p interactions at 40 GeV/ c incident momentum has been investigated in a high statistics experiment performed at the 70 GeV IHEP accelerator. To detect the high energy photons coming from the produced neutral states, a hodoscope spectrometer with a computer on-line was used. A clear structure on the mass spectrum of dipions produced in the reaction π − p→π°π°n is observed at 2 GeV. The decay angular distributions show in this mass region the variation with mass typical of a state with a spin J = 4. The mass of the observed meson is found to be M = (2020±30)MeV and the estimate of the full width is (180±60) MeV.

Inclusive cross sections of η production by e + e - annihilation for c.m. energies between 4.0 and 5.0 GeV are presented. The reaction γ V p → p π + π − was studied in the W , Q 2 region 1.3–2.8 GeV, 0.3–1.4 GeV 2 using the streamer chamber at DESY. A detailed analysis of rho production via γ V p→ ϱ 0 p is presented. Near threshold rho production has peripheral and non-peripheral contributions of comparable magnitude. At higher energies ( W > 2 GeV) the peripheral component is dominant. The Q 2 dependence of σ ( γ V p→ ϱ 0 p) follows that of the rho propagator as predicted by VDM. The slope of d σ /d t at 〈 Q 2 〉 = 0.4 and 0.8 GeV 2 is within errors equal to its value at Q 2 = 0. The overall shape of the ϱ 0 is t dependent as in photoproduction, but is independent of Q 2 . The decay angular distribution shows that longitudinal rhos dominate in the threshold region. At higher energies transverse rhos are dominant. Rho production by transverse photons proceeds almost exclusively by natural parity exchange, σ T N ⩾ (0.83 ± 0.06) σ T for 2.2 < W < 2.8 GeV. The s -channel helicity-flip amplitudes are small compared to non-flip amplitudes. The ratio R = σ L / σ T was determined assuming s -channel helicity conservation. We find R = ξ 2 Q 2 / M ϱ 2 with ξ 2 ≈ 0.4 for 〈 W 〉 = 2.45 GeV. Interference between rho production amplitudes from longitudinal and transverse photons is observed. With increasing energy the phase between the two amplitudes decreases. The observed features of rho electroproduction are consistent with a dominantly diffractive production mechanism for W > 2 GeV.

We discuss the structure of the momentum transfer distributions for the diffractive dissociation processes p → n π + , p → Δ ++ π − and K − → K 890 ∗0 π − . In the near-threshold mass region a clear break of slope is found around t ′KK ∼ 0.25 GeV 2 for the two baryonic channels, whereas no comparable structure is seen for the mesonic system. The K → K ∗ π differential cross section exhibits a nearly exponential behaviour up to t ′ pp ∼ 0.6 GeV 2 , falling over three orders of magnitude. The slope variations and breaks are strongly correlated both to the mass region considered and to the decay angle of the fragmentation system.

The reaction pn→ppπ at 19 GeV/c is studied. It is dominated by the process where the neutron dissociates into the pπ- system and exhibits the characteristic features of diffraction dissociation. The pπ- mass distribution shows a strong peak at 1.3 GeV but is otherwise rather structureless. By comparison with other experiments we find that this peak is neither seen at higher nor at lower energies. The reason why it is not seen in experiments at higher energies seems to be that they suffer from strong experimental limitations. The 1.3 GeV peak is connected with small momentum transfers and an analysis of the moments of the decay angular distributions shows that this peak is a low-spin phenomenon. For larger momentum transfers the lowest moments show an onset already at threshold. By comparison with a pion exchange Deck model we find a substantial baryon exchange contribution for small momentum transfers. This contribution seems to become more pronounced at higher energies.

We have observed e + e − hadrons at C.M. energies of 13 GeV and 17 GeV at PETRA using the TASSO detector. We find R (13 GeV) = 5.6 ± 0.7 and R (17 GeV) = 4.0 ± 0.7. The additional systematic uncertainty is 20%. Comparing inclusive charged hadron spectra we observe scaling between 5 GeV and 17 GeV for x = p / p beam > 0.2; however the 13 GeV cross section is above the 17 GeV cross section for smaller x . This may be due to copious bb̄ production. The events become increasingly jet like at high energies as evidenced by a shrinking sphericity distribution with increasing energy.

We present experimental results on proton-deuteron and deuteron-deuteron elastic scattering measured at the two highest ISR energies, √ s = 53 GeV and √ s = 63 GeV. The data cover the single- and multiple-scattering regions over a wide interval of four-momentum transfer t . In both reactions we find clear evidence for a substantial t -dependent contribution of inelastic intermediate states in the multiple-scattering region, as well as in single scattering. In the analysis we use the Glauber multiple-scattering theory extended to include inelastic shadow effects. This extension of the basic theory contains as input a triple-Regge parametrization describing the high-mass inclusive spectrum. The analysis of inelastic corrections to multiple scattering on deuterons at high energies is shown to provide a sensitive test of different parametrization of inclusive production in proton-proton collisions.

Compton-scattering cross sections from hydrogen (γp→γp) and from deuterium have been measured at four-momentum transfer t in the range 0.014<~−t<~0.17 GeV2 and photon energies of 8 and 16 GeV. Fits to our proton data of the form dσdt=AeBt give B≈7.8 GeV−2 and an intercept A which is in agreement with the optical point. Both coherent scattering from deuterons and incoherent scattering from neutrons and protons are seen from deuterium. A small difference between the neutron and proton cross sections is seen, indicating the presence of about a 3% isovector t-channel exchange amplitude in addition to the predominant isoscalar amplitude. The vector-dominance model predicts lower cross sections (by at least 20%) for both the hydrogen and deuterium cases.
