Results are presented of polarization parameter measurements for the reaction π − p→ π 0 n at 22 momenta between 617 and 2267 MeV/ c . These results are generally in agreement with those of previous measurements and in qualitative agreement with predictions of phase-shift analyses. Together with the recently published differential cross-section measurements, they provide a comprehensive set of data for this reaction in the resonance region.

Data on the reaction π − p → π + π − π 0 have been taken at 12 and 15 GeV/ c with the CERN Omega multiparticle spectrometer. In a 3-pion partial-wave analysis strong production of A 2 0 (1310) and ω ∗ (1675) is observed. Total and differential cross sections are determined and density matrix elements presented as a function of t in the t - and s -channel frames. The energy dependence of A 2 0 production is studied, and a comparison of ω(780), A 2 0 (1310) and ω ∗ (1675) production is made.

The single diffraction dissociation process pp → (p π + π − )p has been studied at the CERN ISR at √ s = 45 GeV and 0.1 < − t < 0.6 GeV 2 . The reaction is dominated by nucleon resonance production: pp → pN (1520) and pp → pN(1688) with cross-sections (0.25 ± 0.08) mb and (0.56 ± 0.19) mb respectively.

The cross sections for the reaction π − p → X o n, X o → 2 λ are measured at 32.5 and 48 GeV c momenta. The cross spectrometer of γ -quanta is used to select events of reaction, whose cross section is only about 0.05 μbarn. The cross section energy dependence has the power form ( ≈ p −1.11±0.12 . conclusion on U(6) symmetry of quark model is made when comparing the differential cross sections at zero angle for the reactions π − p → X o and π − p → η o . A measurement of the complete differential cross section for the reaction pp→dπ+ at 3.00, 3.20, 3.43, 3.65, 3.83, 4.00, 4.20, and 5.05 GeVc incident proton momentum has been made in an attempt to establish the role of the Δ (1950) in this region. The data show that the previously observed enhancement in the forward cross section between 3 and 4 GeVc due to this isobar is an effect which damps out quickly as the production angle departs from zero degrees, in contrast with the well-known enhancement at 1.35 GeVc, which is evident at all angles. In particular, the one-pion-exchange model is in poor agreement with the extended set of data. A detailed description is given of a novel proportional-wire-chamber system which facilitated the selection of this rather rare reaction from a very high competing background.

Results from the study of reactions (1) K−d→K−π−π+d and (2) K−d→K−π−π+nps at 7.3 GeV/c are presented. The interactions are dominated by the production of K*(890), ρ(765), Q(1200−1450), and D*(2200) in (1) and Δ−(1236) in (2). Observation of ρ(765) and its possible source as a misidentified K*(890) is discussed. Evidence is observed of splitting of the Q into two resonances with masses and widths (in MeV) M1=1228±21, Γ1=111±33, M2=1414±15, and Γ2=89±24, L(1775) is observed in (1). An off-shell one-pion-exchange-model calculation is compared to (2). Cross sections and branching ratios of the Q resonances are estimated on the basis of the model.

A spin and parity decomposition is presented of the (π+π+π−) final state formed opposite a proton by incident 13-GeV/c π+ mesons. The A3 enhancement is identified as the 2− amplitude decaying to f0π+ via an S wave. A change in relative phase is noted between the 2−S amplitude and the other principal contributions; this is not incompatible with analyses of the (3π)− system. The method employs the University of Illinois three-body partialwave analysis program.

Using bubble-chamber data on the reactions π+d→pspπ0π0, π+d→pspπ+π−, and π−p→nπ+π− at 7 GeV/c incident π momentum, π−π phase shifts are determined for 0.6<M(ππ)<1.5 GeV/c2. An I=0S-wave resonance is observed in the f0 peak region of M(ππ). Constructive ρ−ω interference is found in the reaction π+n→pπ+π− and evidence is presented for some specifically deuteron effects in the data with large spectator-proton momentum.

We have studied η′ production using a π+ beam incident on deuterium in the 72-in. bubble chamber, with beam momenta from 1.1 to 2.4 GeVc. Cross sections for reactions leading to five- and six-pronged final states are presented. We observe η′ production in the reaction π+d→ppη′, with the decay mode η′→π+π−η. The cross section for π+n→pη′ (studied in the impulse approximation) is observed to rise to a maximum of about 100 μb at 2.2-GeV c.m. energy. The production angular distribution develops peripheral peaking with increasing energy.

The joint decay density-matrix elements have been measured for the ρ0Δ++ and ωΔ++ channels at 3.7 GeV/c. The data are presented as a function of momentum transfer in both the t-channel and s-channel coordinate systems. The presence of correlated decays is illustrated for both reactions by employing selective cuts on the decay angles of one resonance, and displaying the effects on the decay distribution of the opposing resonance. An amplitude analysis is performed with the data near 0° production angle, where we obtain a helicity decomposition of the scattering amplitude with no experimental ambiguity.

We report on an experiment where the different contributions from the transverse and longitudinal polarization of the virtual photon are measured separately for the reaction e − p→e − π + n. The data taken above the resonance region at small ∣ t ∣ values in the q 2 range of ∣ q 2 ∣ < 0.5 GeV 2 show a clear dominance of the longitudinal part of the cross section and are well described by a generalized Born-term model. Using this model the electromagnetic form factor of the pion is determined. At q 2 = −0.35 GeV 2 one gets F π = 0.598 ± 0.021.
