Results on inclusive kaon production at 200 and 900 GeV centre of mass (CM) energy obtained with the UA5 detector at the pulsed CERN SPS antiproton-proton Collider are presented and compared with our earlier data at 546 GeV. The average transverse momentum 〈 p t 〉 of kaons has been estimated to be (0.50±0.04) GeV/ c at 200 GeV and (0.63±0.03) GeV/ c at 900 GeV in the central region and shows an increase with CM energy that is smore rapid than that expected from previous ISR data. The yield of kaons per inelastic p p event is found to be (0.72±0.12) at 200 GeV and (1.31±0.14) at 900 GeV. Finally, the K/π ratio has been found to exhibit a very slow increase with CM energy.

We present inclusive ¶ and K *0 (892) cross sections and Feynman x -spectra in K + p collisions at 250 GeV/ c . In the K + fragmentation region, x > 0.2, the ratio of ¶ to K *0 (892) is used to estimate the strangeness suppression factor λ , with the result γ =0.17 ± 0.02 (stat ± 0.01 (syst). We see no evidence for an energy dependence of λ in the CM energy range 7.8 ≤ s ≤21.7 GeV.

Inclusive π 0 and η production at large transverse momentum were studied in both p̄p and pp interactions at √ s = 24.3 GeV. The experiment was performed using an internal molecular hydrogen gas jet target in the CERN SPS collider. No significant differences between production in p̄p and pp were observed in the transverse momentum range 2.5 < P T < 5.1 GeV/ c .

We have measured the W transverse momentum distribution ( p T W ) using a sample of 323 W → eν and W → μν events produced in proton-antiproton collisions at the CERN collider. In the present letter we extend the study of the distribution up to p T W ∼- m W and compare to leading and higher order QCD. This comparison is a precise test of QCD with hadron colliders and the inclusive spectrum gives good agreement over a large range of p T W . However we observed two events at very large p T W (∼- 100 GeV/ c ) in which the W candidate recoils against an energetic di-jet system. Both events have a very large missing transverse energy and a jet-jet mass compatible with the W mass. In a separate analysis, a topologically similar event has been observed in which a high-mass di-jet system is balanced by a large missing transverse energy which could be interpreted as Z 0 → ν ν decay. We cannot easily explain these three events in terms of explicit second-order QCD calculations. However we cannot exclude at this stage the possibility that they are the result of non-gaussian fluctuations in the response of UA1 calorimetry or a statistical fluctuation in the data.

From the measurements of the inclusive production ratios between π - , K - and p̄ at Feynman x = 0 in 360 GeV/ c pp interactions and using the predictions of the Lund fragmentation model, we determine the strangeness and diquark suppression factors and find γ s , l = 0.28 ± 0.03 and γ D , l = 0.063 ± 0.011 .

We present results from a high statistics study of the nucleon structure function F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) measured in deep inelastic scattering of muons on carbon in the kinematic range 0.25⩽ x ⩽0.80 and Q 2 ⩾25 GeV 2 . The analysis is based on 1.5×10 6 reconstructed events recorded at beam energies of 120, 200 and 280 GeV. R = σ L / σ T is found to be independent of x in the range 0.25⩽ x ⩽0.07 and 40 GeV 2 ⩽ Q 2 ⩽200 GeV 2 with a mean value R =0.015±0.013 ( stat ) ±0.026 (syst.).

Clear evidence is presented for the production of an Ω ∗− resonance of mass 2253±13 MeV/ c 2 and width 81±38 MeV/ c 2 in K − p interactions at 11 GeV/ c . The state is observed in the Ξ (1530)K̄ decay mode, and the corresponding inclusive cross section is estimated to be 630±180 nb. Comparisons are made with theoretical predictions and with similar states observed inhyperon beam induced data.

We have measured the differential and total cross sections ofD meson production in 200 GeV π−-beryllium interactions, using a sample of 48 fully reconstructed and nearly background-freeD mesons in the decay channelsK∓π±,K∓π±π± andK∓π∓π±π±. A single electron trigger has been used to select events containing a pair of charmed particles. A vertex telescope of 6 silison microstrip detectors allowed the reconstruction of tracks of charged secondaries and the reconstruction of primary and decay vertices with high precision. The ratio of branching fractions for\(\mathop {D^0 }\limits^{( - )}\to K^ \mp\pi ^ \pm\) to\(\mathop {D^0 }\limits^{( - )}\to K^ \mp\pi ^ \mp\pi ^ \pm\pi ^ \pm\), and an upper limit for\(D^0- \bar D^0 \) mixing are presented.

Determination of the Real Part of the Isospin Even Forward Scattering Amplitude of Pion Nucleon Scattering at 55-{MeV} as a Test of Low-energy Quantum Chromodynamics

The real part of the isospin-even forward-scattering amplitude of pion-nucleon scattering has been determined at a pion energy of Tπ=55 MeV by measurement of the elastic scattering of positive and negative pions on protons within the Coulomb-nuclear interference region. The value confirms the prediction of the Karlsruhe-Helsinki phase-shift analysis for that energy. These phases have been used to determine the σ term of pion-nucleon scattering by means of dispersion relations, resulting in a value for σ which is in contradiction with chiral perturbation theory of QCD.
