Reaction π−p→π0π0n has been measured with high statistics in the beam momentum range 270–750MeV∕c. The data were obtained using the Crystal Ball multiphoton spectrometer, which has 93% of 4π solid angle coverage. The dynamics of the π−p→π0π0n reaction and the dependence on the beam energy are displayed in total cross sections, Dalitz plots, invariant-mass spectra, and production angular distributions. Special attention is paid to the evaluation of the acceptance that is needed for the precision determination of the total cross section σt(π−p→π0π0n). The energy dependence of σt(π−p→π0π0n) shows a shoulder at the Roper resonance [i.e., the N(1440)12+], and there is also a maximum near the N(1520)32−. It illustrates the importance of these two resonances to the π0π0 production process. The Dalitz plots are highly nonuniform; they indicate that the π0π0n final state is dominantly produced via the π0Δ0(1232) intermediate state. The invariant-mass spectra differ much from the phase-space distributions. The production angular distributions are also different from the isotropic distribution, and their structure depends on the beam energy. For beam momenta above 550MeV∕c, the density distribution in the Dalitz plots strongly depends on the angle of the outgoing dipion system (or equivalently on the neutron angle). The role of the f0(600) meson (also known as the σ) in π0π0n production remains controversial.

Measured values of the differential cross section for pion-nucleon charge exchange are presented at momenta 148, 174, 188, 212, 238, 271, 298, and 323 MeV/c, a region dominated by the Delta resonance. Complete angular distributions were obtained using the Crystal Ball detector at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). Statistical uncertainties of the differential cross sections are typically 2-6%, exceptions being the results at the lowest momentum and at the most forward measurements of the five lowest momenta. We estimate the systematic uncertainties to be 3-6%.

We present measurements of the differential and total cross sections and the Λ polarization for the reaction K−p→ηΛ from threshold to pK−=770MeV/c, with much better precision than previous measurements. Our cross-section data show a remarkable similarity to the SU(3) flavor-related π−p→ηn cross-section results. The reaction K−p→ηΛ at threshold is dominated by formation of the intermediate Λ(1670)12− state.

The Crystal Ball detector has been used at the DORIS II storage ring at DESY to study the reactionγγ→π0π0π0 in theπ0π0π0 invariant mass range from 850 MeV/c2 to 2600 MeV/c2. An enhancement around 1750 MeV/c2 is attributed to theπ2(1670) resonance. The observedπ0π0 invariant mass distribution and theπ0 angular distributions are consistent with those expected for the decay chainπ2→π0f2(1270)→π0π0π0. From our measurements we find the following resonance parameters: two photon partial width\(\Gamma _{\pi _2 }^{\gamma \gamma }= (1.41 \pm 0.23 \pm 0.28)keV\), massM(π2)=(1742±31±49)MeV/c2. and total width\(\Gamma _{\pi _2 }^{tot}= (236 \pm 49 \pm 36)MeV\).

The reaction e+e−→e+e−π0π0 has been analyzed using 97 pb−1 of data taken with the Crystal Ball detector at the DESY e−e+ storage ring DORIS II at beam energies around 5.3 GeV. For the first time we have measured the cross section for γγ→π0π0 for π0π0 mvariant masses ranging from threshold to about 2 GeV. We measure an approximately flat cross section of about 10 nb for W=mπ0π0<0.8 GeV, which is below 0.6 GeV, in good agreement with a theoretical prediction based on an unitarized Born-term model. At higher invariant masses we observe formation of the f2(1270) resonance and a hint of the f0(975). We deduce the following two-photon widths: Γγγ(f2(1270))=3.19±0.16±0.280.29 keV and Γγγ(f0(975))<0.53 keV at 90% C.L. The decay-angular distributions show the π0π0 system to be dominantly spin 0 for W<0.7 GeV and spin 2, helicity 2 in the f2(1270) region, with helicity 0 contributing at most 22% (90% C.L.).

The Crystal Ball Collaboration has measured the energy spectrum of electrons from semileptonicB meson decays at thee+e− storage ring DORIS II. Branching ratios and weak mixing angles of the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix are determined using several models for the hadronic matrix elements. We obtain the branching ratio for semileptonic.B decays to charmed states BR(B→evXc)=(11.7±0.4±1.0)%. Our result for the corresponding Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element is |Vcb|=0.052±0.006. The model dependence of both results is included in the error. We have not observed semileptonicB decays to non-charmed mesons. Analyzing the measured electron spectrum above 2.4 GeV, where nob→c decays contribute, we find BR(B→evXu)/BR(B→evXc)<6.5% at the 90% confidence level. This corresponds to an upper limit |Vub/Vcb|<0.21.
