The π0 inclusive and semi-inclusive, single-spin asymmetries have been measured using transversely polarized, 200-GeV/c proton and antiproton beams colliding with an unpolarized hydrogen target. The measured asymmetries are consistent with zero within the experimental uncertainties for the kinematic region -0.15<xF<+0.15 and 1<pT<4.5 GeV/c. Improvements in the data analysis showed that our earlier large asymmetries at pT≳3 GeV/c were not correct. These data indicate that PQCD expectations seem confirmed and the higher-twist contribution to the single-spin asymmetry in π0 production at xF=0 is not large. Additional evidence for such a conclusion comes from the measurement of a semi-inclusive π0 asymmetry, where associated charged particles are detected opposite to the π0 azimuthal direction. This experiment also provides high-statistics data on the inclusive π0 cross sections for pp and p¯p collisions at √s≊19.4 GeV. © 1996 The American Physical Society.

The production of μ−e+ dileptons by muon neutrinos is studied in a high-statistics bubble-chamber experiment. The experiment consisted of exposing the Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber filled with a heavy Ne-H2 mix to a wideband neutrino beam. In a total sample of 146 700±11 700 charged-current interactions, 461 events with an e+(Pe+>300 MeV/c) and a μ− are observed. The rate for μ−e+ dilepton production in measured to be (0.42±0.06)%. The energy dependence of this rate is presented. The kinematic distributions for the μ−e+ events are consistent with charm production and subsequent semileptonic decay. A total of 60 KS0 and 31 Λ0 decays were observed in the μ−e+ event sample. The measured rates for neutral-strange-particle production are 0.78±0.12 K0K¯0's and 0.19±0.04 Λ0's per μ−e+ event. Finally, rates for Λc+, D0, and D+ production in charged-current νμ interactions are derived. They are found to be (4−2+10)%, (1.7−0.7+0.5)%, and (1.3−0.5+0.4)%, respectively.

The analyzing power in inclusive charged pion production has been measured using the 200 GeV Fermilab polarized proton beam. A striking dependence in x F is observed in which A N increases from 0 to 0.42 with increasing x F for the π + data and decreases from 0 to −0.38 with increasing x F for π − data. The kinematic range covered is 0.2⩽ x F ⩽0.9 and 0.2⩽ p T ⩽2.0 GeV / c . In a simple model our data indicate that at large x F the transverse spin of the proton is correlated with that of its quark constituents.

A high statistics sample of photoproduced charm particles from the FOCUS (E831) experiment at Fermilab has been used to search for CP violation in the Cabibbo suppressed decay modes D+ to K-K+pi+, D0 to K-K+ and D0 to pi-pi+. We have measured the following CP asymmetry parameters: A_CP(K-K+pi+) = +0.006 +/- 0.011 +/- 0.005, A_CP(K-K+) = -0.001 +/- 0.022 +/- 0.015 and A_CP(pi-pi+) = +0.048 +/- 0.039 +/- 0.025 where the first error is statistical and the second error is systematic. These asymmetries are consistent with zero with smaller errors than previous measurements.
All N-values corrected by efficiencies obtained from Monte-Carlo simulations. The CP asymmetry can be written as: ACP=(eta(D)-eta(DBAR))/(eta(D)+eta(DBAR)), where eta(Q=D+ KK)=(N(Q=D+ KK)/N(Q=D+ K) - N(Q=D- KK)/N(Q=D- K))/(N(Q=D+ KK)/N(Q=D+ K) + N(Q=D- KK)/N(Q=D- K)).
All N-values corrected by efficiencies obtained from Monte-Carlo simulations. The CP asymmetry can be written as: ACP=(eta(D)-eta(DBAR))/(eta(D)+eta(DBAR)), where eta(Q=D0 KK)=(N(Q=D0 KK)/N(Q=D0 K) - N(Q=DBAR0 KK)/N(Q=DBAR0 K))/(N(Q=D0 KK)/N(Q=D0 K) + N(Q=DBAR0 KK)/N(Q=DBAR0 K)).
All N-values corrected by efficiencies obtained from Monte-Carlo simulations. The CP asymmetry can be written as: ACP=(eta(D)-eta(DBAR))/(eta(D)+eta(DBAR)), where eta(Q=D0 PIPI)=(N(Q=D0 PIPI) - N(Q=DBAR0 PIPI))/(N(Q=D0 PIPI) + N(Q=DBAR0 PIPI)).
Semi-inclusive triple differential multiplicity distributions of positively charged kaons have been measured over a wide range in rapidity and transverse mass for central collisions of $^{58}$Ni with $^{58}$Ni nuclei. The transverse mass ($m_t$) spectra have been studied as a function of rapidity at a beam energy 1.93 AGeV. The $m_t$ distributions of K^+ mesons are well described by a single Boltzmann-type function. The spectral slopes are similar to that of the protons indicating that rescattering plays a significant role in the propagation of the kaon. Multiplicity densities have been obtained as a function of rapidity by extrapolating the Boltzmann-type fits to the measured distributions over the remaining phase space. The total K^+ meson yield has been determined at beam energies of 1.06, 1.45, and 1.93 AGeV, and is presented in comparison to existing data. The low total yield indicates that the K^+ meson can not be explained within a hadro-chemical equilibrium scenario, therefore indicating that the yield does remain sensitive to effects related to its production processes such as the equation of state of nuclear matter and/or modifications to the K^+ dispersion relation.

The K0 meson production by pi- mesons of 1.15 GeV/c momentum on various nuclear targets was measured with the FOPI spectrometer at the SIS accelerator of GSI. Inclusive production cross-sections and the momentum distributions of K0 mesons are compared to the elementary production cross-sections and to QMC and HSD model predictions. The results point to modifications of the elementary reactions amplitudes inside nuclei and to the existence of a repulsive KN potential of about 20 MeV at normal nuclear matter density.

Elastic scattering of 32.1 GeV/ c K + on protons has been measured in a bubble chamber experiment. Results are presented in the momentum transfer interval 0.06–1.40 GeV 2 and compared with data at different energies. An effective Regge trajectory is calculated using K + p elastic data from 10 to 175 GeV/ c .

We have found 122 charmed-particle decays among 3855 neutrino interactions located in the fiducial volume of a hybrid emulsion spectrometer installed in the Fermilab wide-band neutrino beam. We obtain an average relative charmed-particle production cross section of σ(ν μ → c μ − ) σ(ν μ →μ − ) =4.9 −0.6 +0.7 % , at an average neutrino energy of 22 GeV. We also obtain a production rate of σ(ν μ → c c ν μ ) σ(ν μ →ν μ ) =0.13 −0.11 +0.31 % , if we assume that there was an undetected muon, a limit of σ(ν μ → c c μ − ) σ(ν μ → c μ − )<3% (90% CL ) can be obtained. Other cross section ratios and limits are also presented.

We have observed $23.2 \pm 6.0_{-0.9}^{+1.0}$ purely-leptonic decays of $D_s^+ -> \mu^+ \nu_\mu$ from a sample of muonic one prong decay events detected in the emulsion target of Fermilab experiment E653. Using the $D_s^+ -> \phi \mu^+ \nu_\mu$ yield measured previously in this experiment, we obtain $B(D_s^+ --> \mu^+ \nu_\mu) / B(D_s^+ --> \phi \mu^+ \nu_\mu) =0.16 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.03$. In addition, we extract the decay constant $f_{D_s}=194 \pm 35 \pm 20 \pm 14 MeV$.

A search for charm production in the coherent diffractive dissociation reaction pSi→XSi was carried out for the modes D 0 → K − π + , D 0 → K − π + π + π − , and D + → K − π + π + . No charm signals were observed, and the 90% confidence level upper limit for coherent charm pair production was determined to be 26 μ b per silicon nucleus. The results are interpreted as an upper limit of 0.2% on the amount of intrinsic charm in the proton.
