Large Angle Elastic Scattering of Charged Pions on Protons at 20-{GeV}/c and 30-{GeV}/c Incident Momenta

Elastic cross-section measurements are presented for π ± −p at 20 GeV/ c and π − −p at 30 GeV/ c incident momenta in the large angle region (50° to 90° in the c.m. system). The data are compared with published lower energy elastic cross sections. A test is made of the dimensional counting rules for π ± −p elastic scattering and some indication of a deviation from this rule is observed in the π − −p case. A comparison is also made with the predictions of the constituent interchange model. Although the broad features of the predictions are confirmed, there are some important discrepancies. Finally, the predictions of the model due to Preparata and Soffer are also compared with the new data.

Evidence for a Resonant Structure of the Hadron Production from e+ e- Annihilations in the 1700-MeV-1950-MeV Center-Of-Mass Energy Region

We present experimental evidence for a resonant behaviour of the hadron production from e + e − annihilations at the e + e − storage ring ADONE. A Breit-Wigner fit to the enhancement present between 1800 and 1850 MeV gives the following parameters M = 1812 −13 +7 MeV, Γ = 34 −15 +21 MeV.

Evidence for a Resonant Behavior in e+ e- Annihilation Into Hadrons, Around 1820-MeV, at ADONE

Multihadron production has been measured at the Adone e + e − storage ring in the c.m. energy region 1600 ÷ 1900 MeV. A resonant behaviour is observed, centered at 1819 ± 5 (±2) MeV, with a width of 24 ± 5 (±4) MeV. This effect is observed only in the events with 3 or 4 charged particles together with photons, but not in those without photons.

Backward $K^- p$ Elastic Scattering and 0-degree $\Sigma^- \pi^+$ Production

In this paper we report measurements of the backward K−p differential cross section at 49 momenta covering the momentum range 476-1084 MeV/c. The statistical precision achieved, typically 2.5%, is an order of magnitude better than previous measurements. The systematic errors for this reaction are about 1%. The differential cross section for the reaction K−p→Σ−π+ where the π+ emerges at 0° has also been measured at 32 momenta with comparable improvement in precision over previous experiments. A partial-wave analysis of the K¯N channels including the new K−p backward elastic data is presented.

Measurement of the Total and Partial anti-p p Cross-Section Between 1901-MeV and 1950-MeV

The presence of a structure in the p̄p total cross section at 1930–1940 MeV, with a narrow width of 9 MeV is confirmed. The interpretation of the effect as a single, non interfering, resonance is made difficult by the comparison of the elastic scattering with the charge exchange cross sections.

Measurement of the Polarization Parameter in p p Elastic Scattering at 150-{GeV}/c

The polarization parameter in pp elastic scattering at 150 GeV/ c , and in the momentum transfer interval 0.4 ⩽ − t ⩽ 3.0 GeV 2 , has been measured in an MWPC and scintillation counter experiment at the CERN SPS using a polarized proton target. The polarization is decreasing steadily from zero to ≈ − 10% in the range 0.4 < − t < 1.3 GeV 2 ; for higher | t | the data suggests a change of sign. Results are also given for the differential cross section, which exhibits a small dip at − t = (1.46 ± 0.01) GeV.

K ∗0 (890) production in the hyperchange exchange reaction π − p → K ∗0 (890) Λ 0 Σ 0 at 10 GeV/ c (28 448 events) is discussed. An amplitude analysis in the t ′ range up to 1 GeV 2 shows that the production mechanism is dominated by natural parity exchange (∼84%). Comparisons are made with predictions from a Regge model and a quark model.

We have performed a search for narrow resonances in the center of mass energy range from 29.90 to 31.46 GeV using the e + e − storage ring PETRA at DESY. We present the total cross section for hadron production and an upper limit for resonance production, indicating that no bound state of charge- 2 3 quarks exists in this energy range.
