The highest-energy measurement of ΔσL(pp) and the first ever measurement of ΔσL(p¯p), the differences between proton-proton and antiproton-proton total cross sections for pure longitudinal spin states, are described. Data were taken using 200-GeV/c polarized beams incident on a polarized-proton target. The results are measured to be ΔσL(pp)=−42±48(stat)±53(syst) μb and ΔσL(p¯p)=−256±124(stat)±109(syst) μb. Many tests of systematic effects were investigated and are described, and a comparison to theoretical predictions is also given. Measurements of parity nonconservation at 200 GeV/c in proton scattering and the first ever of antiproton scattering have also been derived from these data. The values are consistent with zero at the 10−5 level.

Measurements of the partial linear momentum transfer and production cross sections for light charged particles are reported for the reaction 680 MeV Ar40+natAg. From examination of light charged particle invariant cross section maps and comparison of experimental angular distributions and energy spectra to a reaction kinematics simulation, an average value of 85% linear momentum transfer is deduced, with a spin range of (0–75)ħ. Integration over energy and angle yields single and coincident light charged particle production cross sections. © 1996 The American Physical Society.

First observations of Pontecorvo reactions with a recoiling neutron

We report the first observations of Pontecorvo reactions of the type ¯pd →Xn. We fully reconstruct the outgoing meson and, for antiprotons stopped in liquid deuterium, we measure: BR(¯pd→π0)=(7.03±0.72)×10−6, BR(¯pd→ηn)=(3.19+0.48)×10−6, BR(¯pd→ωn)=(22.8+4.1)×10−6, BR(¯pd→η′n)14×10−6 (at 95% confidence level). Assuming charge independence, our result for¯ pd→π0n is compatible with measurements of the only other observed Pontecorvo reaction ¯pd → π−p. The experimental ratios between the above branching ratios are in fair agreement with both the statistical model and dynamical two-step models (assumingN¯ N annihilation into two mesons, with subsequent absorption of one meson on the remaining nucleon). This agreement suggests that there may be appreciable rates for Pontecorvo reactions producing final state mesons with masses above 1 GeV.

Inspire Record 441927 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.47358

We report on the observation of single W boson production in a data sample collected by the L3 detector at LEP2. The signal consists of large missing energy final states with a single energetic lepton or two hadronic jets. The cross-section is measured to be 0.61 −0.33 +0.43 ± 0.05 pb at the centre of mass energy s = 172 GeV , consistent with the Standard Model expectation. From this measurement the following limits on the anomalo γWW gauge couplingsare derived at 95% CL: −3.6 < Δκ γ < 1.5 and −3.6 < λ γ < 3.6.

Measurements of the ratio of Drell-Yan yields from an 800 \rm{GeV/c} proton beam incident on liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets are reported. Approximately 360,000 Drell-Yan muon pairs remained after all cuts on the data. From these data, the ratio of anti-down ($\bar{d}$) to anti-up ($\bar{u}$) quark distributions in the proton sea is determined over a wide range in Bjorken-$x$. These results confirm previous measurements by E866 and extend them to lower $x$. From these data, $(\bar{d}-\bar{u})$ and $\int(\bar{d}-\bar{u})dx$ are evaluated for $0.015<x<0.35$. These results are compared with parameterizations of various parton distribution functions, models and experimental results from NA51, NMC, and HERMES.

Measurement of the anti-p p ---> anti-lambda Lambda and anti-p p ---> Antisigma0 Lambda + c.c. reactions at 1.726-GeV/c and 1.771-GeV/c

Interest in the production of hyperon-antihyperon pairs following antiproton-proton annihilation stems largely from attempts to understand the nature of flavor production. To date the major focus of both the experimental and the theoretical effort has been on the p¯p→Λ¯Λ reaction. In this paper, we present data on the complementary channels p¯p→Σ¯0Λ and p¯p→Λ¯Σ0. Events from the kinematically similar p¯p→Λ¯Λ reaction were obtained in parallel. The procedure to distinguish these three separate reactions is described and results for all channels are presented. These include the total and differential cross sections, hyperon polarizations, and spin correlation coefficients. Data were obtained at incident antiproton lab momenta of 1.726 and 1.771 GeV/c which correspond to excess kinetic energies in the p¯p→Λ¯Σ0+c.c. reaction of 26 and 40 MeV, respectively, above threshold. Comparisons are made to earlier work at similar excess energies in the p¯p→Λ¯Λ channel. The low-energy regime has been highlighted in this experiment to reduce the complexity in the theoretical analysis. © 1996 The American Physical Society.

Pair production of W bosons in e+ e- interactions at s**(1/2) = 161-GeV

We report on the measurement of W-boson pair-production with the L3 detector at LEP at a centre-of-mass energy of 161.34 GeV. In a data sample corresponding to a total luminosity of 11 pb −1 , we select four-fermion events with high invariant masses of pairs of hadronic jets or leptons. Combining all final states, the measured total cross section for W-pair production is: sigma WW = 2.89 −0.70 +0.81 (stat.) ± 0.14 (syst.) pb. Within the Standard Model, this corresponds to a mass of the W boson of: M W = 80.80 −0.42 +0.48 (exp.) ± 0.03 (LEP) GeV. Limits on anomalous triple-vector-boson couplings are derived.

Inclusive cross sections for Ξ- hyperon production in high-energy Σ-, π- and neutron induced interactions were measured by the experiment WA89 at CERN. Secondary Σ- and π- beams with average momenta of 345 GeV/c and a neutron beam of 260 GeV/c were produced by primary protons of 450 GeV/c from the CERN SPS. The influence of the target mass on the Ξ- cross section is explored by comparing reactions on copper and carbon nuclei. Both single and double differential cross sections are presented as a function of the transverse momentum and the Feynman variable xF. A strong leading effect for Σ- produced by Σ- is observed.

Total reaction and 2n-removal cross-sections of 20-60 A MeV He-4, He-6, He-8, Li-(6-9), Li-11, and Be-10 on Si

Total reaction cross sections, σR, of 20–60A MeV He4,6,8, Li6–9,11, and Be10 were measured by injecting magnetically separated, focused, monoenergetic, identified secondary beams of those projectiles into a Si detector telescope and measuring their energy-deposition spectra. These σR’s, accurate to about 3%, were compared with predictions of optical, strong absorption, and microscopic models. The latter gave the best overall fit to the data, providing long-tailed matter densities were assumed. The best available optical potentials generally overpredicted the data by about 10%. Strong absorption calculations, in which the isospin-dependent term is quite important, were often unsuccessful, especially for projectiles with large neutron excess. Two-neutron removal cross sections were measured for He6 and Li11; the Li11 data were slightly overpredicted by a microscopic model which includes correlation effects for the Li11 valence neutrons. Both 2n and 4n removal from He8 were observed, in about a 2:1 ratio. Subtraction analysis of the data indicates that He4 is a good core within He6 and He8, as is Li9 within Li11. © 1996 The American Physical Society.

Dependence of nu nucleus cross-sections on the mass number

High energy v -nucleus cross sections have been compared for Pb, Fe, Al and C as target nuclei, exposed to the CERN v -beam. The events with θ vμ < 29 0 and p μ ⪆ 1 GeV /c have rates in the ratio of the mass number of the nuclei. Also a restricted sample with q 2 ⪅ 0.1 (GeV/ c ) 2 and θ vμ < 5 0 does not reveal a theoretically predicted deviation from A -proportionality, although due to the limited statistical accuracy in this restricted sample an “ A 2 3 - contribution ” of several tenths cannot be excluded either.
