Differential and total cross sections for π+ absorption on Li6, leading to the pp+4Heg.s., pp+4He*, and pp+X final states, are presented at incident pion energies of 100 and 165 MeV. We conclude that most of the cross section is confined to the level of coplanarity expected from quasideuteron absorption in the nuclear environment and that the contributions of nonquasideuteron absorption mechanisms are small. © 1996 The American Physical Society.

A strangelet search in Si+Pt and Au+Pt collisions at alternating-gradient synchrotron (AGS) energies, using a focusing spectrometer, sensitive to mass per charge of 3-14 GeV/c2 was conducted during the 1992 and 1993 heavy ion runs at the AGS. The null results thereof are presented as upper limits on the invariant production cross section, in the range of 10−5-10−4 mb c3/GeV2, and model dependent sensitivity limits in the range of 10−7-10−5 per collision. Measurements of the production cross sections of several nonstrange nuclear systems, from p to Be7 and Li8, the background of the strangelet search, are also presented.

We report a new measurement of Rb=Gamma(Z -> bb)/ Gamma(Z -> hadrons) using a double tag technique where the b selection is based on topological reconstruction of the mass of the B-decay vertex. The measurement was performed using a sample of 150k hadronic Z0 events collected with the SLD at the SLAC Linear Collider during the years 1993-1995. The method utilizes the 3-D vertexing abilities of the SLD CCD pixel vertex detector and the small stable SLC beams to obtain a high b tagging efficiency of 37% for a purity of 97.2%. The high purity reduces the systematics introduced by charm contamination and correlations with Rc. We obtain a result of Rb=0.2176+/-0.0033(stat.)+/-0.0017(syst.)+/-0.0008(Rc). Cross-sections and angular distributions for the production of events with single and multiple photons are measured from data recorded with the OPAL detector at the recently upgraded LEP collider. The measured cross-sections are generally consistent with Standard Model expectations for the e + e − → ν v γ(γ) and e + e − → γγ ( γ ) processes. Six events with an acoplanar photon pair and large missing mass are found. The observed number of events is larger than expected from e + e − → ν ν γγ ; however, the missing mass distribution is compatible with the Z 0 resonance. Deviations from QED are constrained by the data on e + e − → γγ ( γ ). Lower limits are set at 95% confidence level on the QED cut-off parameters Λ + and Λ − of 152 GeV and 142 GeV, respectively, and also on the mass of an excited electron of 147 GeV.

Deep inelastic charged--current reactions have been studied in $e~+p$ and $e~-p$ collisions at a center of mass energy of about $300\,\gev$ in the kinematic region $Q~2\greater200\,\gev~2$ and $x\greater0.006$ using the ZEUS detector at HERA. The integrated cross sections for $Q~2\greater200\,\gev~2$ are found to be $\sigep=30.3\,{}~{+5.5}_{\mns4.2}\,{}~{+1.6}_{\mns2.6}\,{\rm pb}$ and $\sigem=54.7\,{}~{+15.9}_{\mns\chax 9.8}\,{}~{+2.8}_{\mns3.4}\,{\rm pb}$. Differential cross sections have been measured as functions of the variables $x$, $y$ and $Q~2$. From the measured differential cross sections $d\sigma/dQ~2$, the $W$ boson mass is determined to be $M_W=79\,{}~{+8} _{-7}{}~{+4}_{-4}\,\gev$. Measured jet rates and transverse energy profiles agree with model predictions. A search for charged--current interactions with a large rapidity gap yielded one candidate event, corresponding to a cross section of $\sigep(Q~2\greater200\,\gev~2;\eta_{\rm max}<2.5)=0.8\,{}_{-0.7}~ {+1.8}\,\pm0.1\,{\rm pb}$.

We report on the first measurements of e + e − annihilations into hadrons and lepton pairs at centre-of-mass energies between 130 GeV and 140 GeV. In a total luminosity of 5 pb −1 collected with the L3 detector at LEP we select 1577 hadronic and 401 lepton-pair events. The measured cross sections and leptonic forward-backward asymmetries agree well with the Standard Model predictions.

We have searched for a heavy neutral gauge boson, Z ′, using the decay channel Z ′ → ee . The data were collected with the DØ detector at the Fermilab Tevatron during the 1992–1993 p p collider run at s =1.8 TeV from an integrated luminosity of 15±1 pb −1 . Limits are set on the cross section times brancing ratio for the process p p → Z′ → ee as a function of the Z ′ mass. We exclude the existence of a Z ′ of mass less than 490 GeV/c 2 , assuming a Z ′ with the same coupling strengths to quarks and leptons as the standard model Z boson.

At the electron-proton collider HERA the inclusive $D~{*\pm}$ meson photoproduction cross section has been measured with the H1 detector in two different, but partly overlapping, kinematical regions. For the first, where $\langle W_{\gamma p}\rangle \approx 200$\ GeV and $Q~2 < 0.01\,\gev~2$, the result is $\sigma(\gamma p \rightarrow c \bar{c} X) = (13.2 \pm 2.2 ~{+2.1}_{-1.7}\, ~{+9.9}_{-4.8})\,\mu b$. The second measurement for $Q~2 < 4\,\gev~2$ yields $\sigma(\gamma p \rightarrow c \bar{c} X) = ( 9.3 \pm 2.1 ~{+1.9}_{-1.8}\, ~{+6.9}_ {-3.2} )\,\mu b$ at $\langle W_{\gamma p}\rangle \approx 142$\,GeV and $\sigma(\gamma p \rightarrow c \bar{c} X) = ( 20.6 \pm 5.5 ~ {+4.3}_{-3.9}\, ~{+15.4}_{-7.2})\,\mu b$ at $\langle W_{\gamma p} \rangle \approx 230$\,GeV, respectively. The third error accounts for an additional uncertainty due to the proton and photon parton density parametrizations. Differential cross sections are presented as a function of the $D~{*\pm}$ transverse momentum and rapidity. The results compare reasonably well with next-to-leading order QCD calculations. Evidence for diffractive photoproduction of charm quark is presented.

Results on K s 0 production at central rapidity in sulphur-tungsten interactions are presented. The selection procedure used to identify K s 0 particles through their decay to two charged pions is described. The m T spectra for K s 0 , Λ and Λ and the relative production rates K s 0 Λ and K s 0 Λ , calculated in the kinematic region p T > 1 GeV/ c and 2.5 ≤ y LAB ≤ 3.0, are discussed.
