The differential cross sections at 180° for the reactions γ+p→π++n and γ+n→π−+p were measured using a magnetic spectrometer to detect π± mesons. In order to reduce the spread of energy resolution due to the nucleon motion inside the deuteron, a photon difference method was employed with a 50-MeV step for the reaction γ+n→π−+p. The data show structures at the second- and the third-resonance regions for both reactions. A simple phenomenological analysis was made for fitting the data, and the results are compared with those of previous analyses.

Cross sections for π0 photoproduction from hydrogen in the backward direction have been measured for photon energies of 6, 8, 12, and 18 GeV. The range of momentum transfer covered in these measurements is −1 (GeVc)2<u<0(GeVc)2, dσdu is found to have a backward peak and decreases with energy as s−3.0±0.2. Photoproduction of η0 and ρ0 mesons has also been observed.

The differential cross sections for single-π+ photoproduction from hydrogen have been measured over a range of momentum transfers from -2×10−4 to -2 (GeV/c)2, and photon energies from 5 to 16 GeV. The differential cross section increases by roughly a factor of 2 as the magnitude of the square of the momentum transfer decreases from 0.02 (GeV/c)2. The cross section falls approximately as exp(−3|t|) at large momentum transfers, with a similar momentum-transfer dependence of the cross section at all photon energies studied.

We have measured the cross sections at 90° c.m. for π± and π0 photoproduction with polarized photons. The photon energies ranged from 0.8 to 2.2 GeV. We compare the resonant "bumps" in the cross section with theoretical models. The measured asymmetry agrees with a quark-model calculation though the predicted cross sections are low.

The angular dependence of the asymmetry for negative-pion photoproduction on neutrons by linearly polarized photons has been measured for photon energies 260, 300, 350, 400, 450, and 500 MeV at center-of-mass angles 60°, 75°, 90°, 150°, and 120°. The results are compared with theoretical models of low-energy single-pion photoproduction. The observed asymmetry below 400 MeV shows good agreement with predictions of dispersion-theoretical models by Berends, Donnachie, and Weaver and by Schwela. The asymmetry values in the 400-500 MeV energy region suggest that smaller M1− amplitude is more favorable.

Measurements are presented of the recoil-proton polarization for π0 photoproduction angles near 64° in the c.m. system. The steep angular dependence observed by others at lower energies persists to at least 1500 MeV, and the polarization crosses through zero near 63° over the entire 900-1600-MeV energy interval. Summary fits are made to available recoil-proton polarization data, 950-1250 MeV, and are found to require terms of order cos3θ, but no higher.

The cross section for single π0 photoproduction from hydrogen has been measured at nominal angles of 70°, 90°, 130°, and 180° for photon energies 220-400 MeV by detecting the recoil protons. The 180° measurements, taken with a new setup, avoid big corrections present in some of the previously published results. These new data allow a direct comparison with the experiment presented by the Bonn group and with the most recent theoretical predictions.

The asymmetry Σ(k,θ*)=(dσ⊥−dσ∥)(dσ⊥+σ∥) of the polarized cross sections for π0 photoproduction has been measured at θ*=90° for energies k of the incident photon in the range 230-380 MeV. The experiment has been performed with the polarized γ-ray beam of the Frascati 1-GeV electron synchrotron. The experimental results are compared with the present theoretical predictions in order to investigate the importance of ω exchange in the t channel and the contribution of the E1+(3) multipole at the 33 resonance. The theory with ω exchange is in the best agreement with the experiment.

The differential cross section for the reaction γ+n→π−+p was measured for laboratory photon energies between 600 and 1250 MeV, using a liquid deuterium target. The internal nucleon momentum distribution of the deuteron was used to calculate the major effect of using deuterium as a neutron target. The data show that the amplitude to excite the F15(1688) resonance is small, in agreement with a recent quark-model prediction.

The variation of the differential cross section for π+ photoproduction from hydrogen, with γ-ray energy, has been examined at a laboratory angle of 58° to the γ-ray beam. A thin hydrogen target, and a counter system designed to eliminate random events, have been employed. Mean values for the differential cross section dσdΩ at γ-ray energies of 162, 168, 175, and 192 Mev are 5.42±0.38, 5.77±0.41, 6.74±0.47, and 8.22±0.58 μb/sr, respectively, where the error limits refer to relative values. The results substantiate the rising trend of the interaction quantity {(dσdΩ)(μ2pε)(1+ωM)2} near threshold, in accord with dispersion theory; and the absolute cross sections are compatible with a threshold value for a0+ near 20 μb/ steradian, consistent with findings in related pion work.

We have measured the polarization of the recoil proton in the reactions γp→π0p and γp→γp for incident photon energies between 3 and 7 GeV, and t values from -0.2 to -0.65 GeV2. We have measured the ratio of the cross section for γ+n→π0+n to the cross section for γ+p→π0+p at 4.7 and 8.2 GeV. The measurements were made by detecting the recoil nucleons in coincidence with the decay γ rays of the π0's produced from a deuterium target. At 4.7 GeV the cross-section ratio, R≡σ(γ+n→π0+n)σ(γ+p→π0+p), is less than 1.0 at low t, with an indication of a dip at about t=−0.7(GeVc)2, and rises to 1.0 at high t. The ratios at the higher energy have less structure and are uniformly closer to 1.0.

Asymmetries in charged-pion photoproduction from hydrogen and deuterium have been measured with 16-GeV linearly polarized photons. Considerable energy dependence is seen in the natural-parity contribution to the π−π+ ratio from deuterium, and in the unnatural-parity part of the cross section for γn→π−p. The energy dependence of this latter cross section is consistent with the expected from a conventional pion Regge trajectory.

The cross section for photoproduction of single π+ from hydrogen has been measured at laboratory angles of 110°, 127.5° and 152°, between 0.9- and 3.2-GeV incident photon energy. Measurements have been made with approximately 15% statistical accuracy at about 40 photon energies at each angle. The results agree well with the previous Caltech data of Thiessen. The cross section shows a rapid drop with increasing energy with superimposed bumps or shoulders corresponding to the N(1688), Δ(1920), and Δ(2420). We have completed measurements of the differential cross section for γ+p→π0+p, and the asymmetry with polarized photons, for incident photon energies from 4 to 18 GeV and momentum transfers between t=−0.1 and −1.4 (GeV/c)2. The experiment was performed at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, using the SLAC 1.6-GeV/c spectrometer to analyze protons recoiling from a hydrogen target. For the cross-section measurements a normal collimated bremsstrahlung beam was used. For the asymmetry measurements the polarized photons were produced by coherent bremsstrahlung from a diamond crystal, and a coincidence was required between the recoil proton and one of the π0 decay photons in a shower counter.
