We have measured the analyzing power A y in n-d elastic scattering at 67.0 MeV. The experiment was based on the detection of recoil deuterons, allowing for a precise measurement of the backward angular range. The results are in good agreement with recent three-nucleon calculations which are based on the Paris and Bonn NN potentials.

A Large Solid Angle Study of Pion Absorption on He3

Measurements have been made of pi+ absorption on He3 at T_pi+ = 118, 162, and 239 MeV using the Large Acceptance Detector System (LADS). The nearly 4pi solid angle coverage of this detector minimizes uncertainties associated with extrapolations over unmeasured regions of phase space. The total absorption cross section is reported. In addition, the total cross section is divided into components in which only two or all three nucleons play a significant role in the process. These are the first direct measurements of the total and three nucleon absorption cross sections.

We have studied the reactions\(\bar pn \to \pi ^ -\pi ^ -\pi ^ +(\pi ^0 )\) at incident momenta between 0.42 and 1.65 GeV/c using two exposures in deuterium-filled bubble chambers. The ratio of the rates for 3π to 4π final states shows a sharp increase at a momentum of about 0.8 GeV/c. A full partial-wave analysis of the 3π final state has been made and complex structure is observed at approximately the same momentum, associated in particular with theJP=3+ final state.

A study of hadron Pb collisions through hadron-induced showers in thick lead chambers.

Structures of hadron-induced showers observed by the Pamir thick lead chambers are compared with simulations. The simulations are made for several models, VENUS, QGSJET, HDPM and the modified UA5 model, for hadron–nucleus interactions. A parameter Z , which is related to the inelasticity of hadron–Pb interactions, is defined and the Z -distribution of experimental data is compared with those of the simulations applying the same procedure of data processing to both sets of data. The Z -distribution for single-isolated hadrons is well reproduced by the models (VENUS, QGSJET and modified UA5) which give an average inelasticity 〈K h – Pb 〉=0.7 –0.8, whereas that for multi hadrons is close to the HDPM model which gives a smaller inelasticity of 〈K h – Pb 〉=0.5 –0.6. The difference of the characteristics between the two categories of hadron-induced showers is discussed.
