Proton Polarization in Inclusive Processes at {Fermilab} Energies

The results of an experiment conducted at Fermilab to measure the polarization of the final-state proton in the reaction p+p→p↑+X and p+C→p↑+X are presented. Measurements were made at beam energies of 100, 200, 300, and 400 GeV for PT from 0.5 to 1.5 GeV/c and xF between - 0.7 and - 0.9.

Diffraction Dissociation of High Energy Protons on Hydrogen and Deuterium Targets

We report results from a measurement of the inclusive processes pp→Xp and pd→Xd in the range 5<Mx2s<0.1, 0.01≲|t|≲0.1 (GeV/c)2, and incident proton momenta of 65, 154, and 372 GeV/c. Both pp and pd data show an exponential t dependence and a dominant 1Mx2 behavior for Mx2s≲0.05. By comparing pp and pd data we test factorization and, using the Glauber model, we measure the XN total cross section, σXN=43±10 mb.

Production of Hadrons at Large Transverse Momentum in 200-GeV, 300-GeV and 400-GeV p p and p n Collisions

Measurements of the invariant cross section Ed3σd3p are presented for the production of hadrons (π, K, p, and p¯) at large transverse momentum (p⊥) by 200-, 300-, and 400-GeV protons incident on H2, D2, Be, Ti, and W targets. The measurements were made at a laboratory angle of 77 mrad, which corresponds to angles near 90° in the c.m. system of the incident proton and a single nucleon at rest. The range in p⊥ for the data is 0.77≤p⊥≤6.91 GeV/c, corresponding to values of the scaling variable x⊥=2p⊥s from 0.06 to 0.64. For p−p collisions, the pion cross sections can be represented in the region x⊥>35 by the form (1p⊥n)(1−x⊥)b, with n=8 and b=9. The ratio of π+ to π− production grows as a function of x⊥ to a value larger than 2 at x⊥≳0.5. The ratios of the production of K+ and protons to π+ and of K− and antiprotons to π− also scale with x⊥ for p−p collisions. The K±, p, and p¯ fitted values for n and b are given. Particle ratios are also presented for D2, Be, Ti, and W targets and the dependences on atomic weight (A) are discussed.

The momentum correlation of charged particles emitted together with a large transverse momentum pion has also been studied, using two magnetic spectrometers each centred at 90°.

N p Charge Exchange Scattering at Fermilab

We have measured the neutron-proton charge-exchange differential cross section in the momentum interval 60 to 300 GeV/c, with squared four-momentum transfers 0.002 to 0.8 (GeV/c)2. Independent of incident momentum, the data are characterized by a sharp forward peak of width 0.02 (GeV/c)2, followed by a shoulder and gentler falloff at higher momentum transfers.

New measurements of proton proton total cross-section at the CERN intersecting storage rings

Measurements of the proton-proton total cross section have been made with increased precision (±0.6%) over the ISR energy range s =23.5−62.7 GeV . Two different experimental methods gave consistent results, showing that the total cross section increases 10% over the ISR range and in addition that the absolute value of the ISR luminosity can be measured to ±0.9%.

A Study of the Charge Exchange Reaction p p --> n Delta++ (1232) at ISR Energies

We report on a study of the charge-exchange reaction pp → nΔ ++ (1232) at the CERN intersecting storage rings (ISR) in the energy range √ s = 23 to 53 GeV. From our analysis of the energy dependence of the total cross-section, of the differential cross-section d σ /d t and of the decay angular distributions we find evidence that pion exchange is dominant up to √ s = 23 GeV and that ( ϱ +A 2 ) exchange dominates the reaction for √ s ⩾ 30 GeV, as described by simple Regge-pole models.

Measurement of the K0(L) p and K0(L) d Total Cross-Sections

Total cross sections have been measured for the transmission of long-lived neutral K mesons through hydrogen and deuterium. The momentum range for the KL0 was 130-550 MeV/c. The momentum of each detected kaon was measured by time of flight. The cross sections are consistent with earlier less precise results. Comparison of the KL0 cross sections is made with the results of several K-matrix fits to other K¯N data, and the KL0 total cross sections are compared with existing theoretical calculations for K−d total cross sections.

The s Dependence of Double Diffraction Dissociation of Protons at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings

We report results on a new measurement of the double diffractive reaction pp → (p π + π − ) (p π + π − ) at the ISR obtained with the Split Field Magnet detector. Experimental procedures and data analysis are discussed in detail. The cross section measured at the five standard ISR energies exhibits an increase of (55 ± 7)% in the s -range from 549 to 3892 GeV 2 .

We have measured the charge-exchange reaction pp → (p π + ) (p π − ) at s = 23, 31, 45, 53, and 63 GeV at the ISR, using the Split Field Magnet detector. The data are characterized by a sharp forward peak of width 0.02 (GeV/ c ) 2 , followed by a much gentler slope at higher | t |; sizeable Δ ++ , Δ 0 , and N 0 production is observed in the (Nπ) mass spectra. Two different components are present in the data following power-law energy dependence of the type p lab − n with n 1 = −1.63 ± 0.13 and n 2 = −0.96 ± 0.07, respectively, indicating the onset of mechanisms in competition with pion exchange at ISR energies.
