Fermilab experiment E835 has measured the cross section for the reaction p ̄ p→e + e − at s =11.63, 12.43, 14.40 and 18.22 GeV 2 . From the analysis of the 66 observed events new high-precision measurements of the proton magnetic form factor are obtained.
Using a prompt neutrino beam in which a nu_tau component was identified for the first time, the nu_tau magnetic moment was measured based on a search for an anomalous increase in the number of neutrino-electron interactions. One such event was observed when 2.3 were expected from background processes, giving an upper 90% confidence limit of 3.9x10^-7 Bohr magnetons.
We report preliminary results on the production of electron-positron pairs in the mass range 2.5 to 4 GeV in 400-GeV p-Be interactions. Production cross sections of the ψ(3100) near x=0 as a function of pt, x, and the decay angle are presented and implications of these new data for single direct leptons are discussed. A ψ′(3700) signal is observed at a level corresponding to σ(ψ′)σ(ψ)=(10±3)%.
We present the first measurement of the form factor ratios g1/f1 (direct axial-vector to vector), g2/f1 (second class current) and f2/f1 (weak magnetism) for the decay Xi0 -> Sigma+ e- anti-nu/e using the KTeV (E799) beam line and detector at Fermilab. From the Sigma+ polarization measured with the decay Sigma+ -> p pi0 and the e- - anti-nu/e correlation, we measure g1/f1 to be 1.32 +0.21-0.17(stat.) +/- 0.05(syst.), assuming the SU(3)f (flavor) values for g2/f1 and f2/f1. Our results are all consistent with exact SU(3)f symmetry.
An analysis of high-transverse-momentum electrons using data from the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) of p¯p collisions at s=1800 GeV yields values of the production cross section times branching ratio for W and Z0 bosons of σ(p¯p→WX→eνX)=2.19±0.04(stat)±0.21(syst) nb and σ(p¯p→Z0X→e+e−X)=0.209±0.013(stat)±0.017(syst) nb. Detailed descriptions of the CDF electron identification, background, efficiency, and acceptance are included. Theoretical predictions of the cross sections that include a mass for the top quark larger than the W mass, current values of the W and Z0 masses, and higher-order QCD corrections are in good agreement with these measured values.
The first observation of μ + e + events produced in antineutrino interactions using the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber is reported. The relative yield of μ + e + events is (4.8 −3.2 +5.3 ) × 10 −4 of all charged-current events with antineutrino energy greater than 10 GeV. The observed V 0 rate is 1.0 −1.0 +1.2 per μ + e + event. Possible sources of these events are discussed.
We present a measurement of $\sigma \cdot B(W \rightarrow e \nu)$ and $\sigma \cdot B(Z~0 \rightarrow e~+e~-)$ in proton - antiproton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =1.8$ TeV using a significantly improved understanding of the integrated luminosity. The data represent an integrated luminosity of 19.7 pb$~{-1}$ from the 1992-1993 run with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). We find $\sigma \cdot B(W \rightarrow e \nu) = 2.49 \pm 0.12$nb and $\sigma \cdot B(Z~0 \rightarrow e~+e~-) = 0.231 \pm 0.012$nb.
The transverse momentum cross section of $e^+e^-$ pairs in the $Z$-boson mass region of 66-116 GeV/$c^2$ is precisely measured using Run II data corresponding to 2.1 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The cross section is compared with quantum chromodynamic calculations. One is a fixed-order perturbative calculation at ${\cal O}(\alpha_s^2)$, and the other combines perturbative predictions at high transverse momentum with the gluon resummation formalism at low transverse momentum. Comparisons of the measurement with calculations show reasonable agreement. The measurement is of sufficient precision to allow refinements in the understanding of the transverse momentum distribution.
The cross section for the reaction p¯p→e+e− has been measured at s=8.8, 10.8, 12.4, 13.1, and 14.4 GeV2 by Fermilab experiment E835. A non-magnetic spectrometer is used to identify the e+e− final states generated by the antiproton beam intersecting an internal hydrogen gas jet target. From the analysis of the 144 observed events, new high-precision measurements of the proton magnetic form factor for timelike momentum transfers are obtained.
We present a measurement of the forward-backward charge asymmetry of the process pp¯→Z0/γ+X,Z0/γ→e+e− at Mee>MZ, using 110pb−1 of data at s=1.8TeV collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The measured charge asymmetries are 0.43±0.10 in the invariant mass region Mee>105GeV/c2, and 0.070±0.016 in the region 75<Mee<105GeV/c2. These results are consistent with the standard model values of 0.528±0.009 and 0.052±0.002, respectively.
