The differential cross section of π+p elastic scattering has been measured in two high-statistics bubble-chamber exposures at laboratory beam momenta of 3.7 and 7.1 GeV/c. A new feature suggested by these data is a dip in dσdu at −u≃3 GeV2. This dip corresponds well to the third zero of J0(b−u′), where ℏcb=1 fm. The effective u-channel Regge trajectory computed for these two energies has a slope of 0.22 ± 0.26.
The charmonium χ states are observed in both π− and p Be interactions near 200 GeV/c via their radiative decay into J/ψ. The χ(3510) and χ(3555) are produced with roughly equal cross sections in π− collisions while the χ(3555) dominates in p collisions. Simple gluon fusion can account for χ production with incident protons but additional mechanisms are needed for incident π−.

Strong evidence is presented for quasi-two-body production of a π + p enhancement with mass 1881±6MeV and width 219±23MeV, recoiling off vector mesons ϱ O and ω from π + p interactions at 7.1 GeV/ c and K * o (890) from K + p interactions at 12 GeV/ c . We report results from a measurement of the inclusive diffraction dissociation of photons on hydrogen, γp→Xp, in the range 75<pγ<148 GeV/c, 0.02<‖t‖<0.1 (GeV/c)2, and MX2/s<0.1. Our data show an exponential t dependence and a dominant 1/MX2 behavior for MX2>4 GeV2. We test the finite-mass sum rule and, by comparing γp with π−p data obtained in the same apparatus, we test factorization.

The differential cross-section for elastic scattering π−+p has been determined on the basis of 1 421 events observed in a propane bubble chamber. The angular distribution presents a backward bump (θ>90°) of (31.5±1.3)%. The amplitude at 0° obtained extrapolating the angular distribution by means of a least squares fit is compared with the value obtained from the dispersion relations and the optical theorem. New values of the pion proton cross-sections were taken into account for the dispersion relation integrals. Using the same best fit of the angular distribution a value for the interaction radius is obtained from considerations based on the diffraction scattering part.

Quasi-elastic scattering with central dipion cluster production is studied in π+p andK+p interactions at 250 GeV/c. The cross section of double pomeron exchange is obtained as σDPE(π+p →π+(π+π−)p)=24 ±5 µb and σDPE(K+p→K+(π+π−)p)=19 ±5 µb. The low energy pomeron-pomeron cross section is estimated for the first time.

An analysis was made of 355 interactions between 1r- mesons and nucleons. The momentum and angular distributions of the secondary charged particles were measured. Information on 1r0 mesons produced in the interactions has been obtained. The experimental data are compared with the statistical theory. The results suggest that peripheral interactions may exist. In events of low multiplicity (two-prong cases) "one-meson" peripheral interactions play an important role, while in events of large multiplicity an important role is played by interactions not of the one-meson type, among which also central collisions are possible.

The differential cross section d σ d t′ for the charge-exchange process π + p → π 0 ( π + p) at 8, 16 and 23 GeV/ c is presented for several regions of the π + p effective mass. It is found that the dip at t ′ ≈ 0.6 (GeV/ c ) 2 which is observed in the Δ(1236) mass band becomes a less pronounced structure in the higher mass regions. However, while the slope of the d σ d t′ distributions in the near-forward direction decreases strongly with increasing π + p mass, there is no evidence that the observed structure moves to higher values of t ′ as the π + p mass increases. These results are consistent with a Regge-exchange picture where the position of the dip is determined by the exchanged trajectory, but are inconsistent with a simple geometrical picture.
A measurement is reported of charged multiplicity distributions of high-mass diffractive π±, K±, and p± states produced in 100 and 200 GeV/c hadron-proton collisions, h+p→X+p. The distributions are described well by a Gaussian function that depends only on the available mass M=Mx−Mh, has a maximum at n0≅2M12, and a peak-to-width ratio n0D≅2.
Cross sections for pi+-p elastic scattering have been measured to high precision, for beam momenta between 800 and 1240 MeV/c, by the EPECUR Collaboration, using the ITEP proton synchrotron. The data precision allows comparisons of the existing partial-wave analyses (PWA) on a level not possible previously. These comparisons imply that updated PWA are required.

We have studied the reaction π − p → X − p followed by the decay X − → ωπ − at 11.2 GeV/ c . The partial-wave analysis in the mass range 1.36–2.0 GeV shows a clear structure in the J P = 3 − , m = 0 wave peaking at 1.67 GeV with a width of ∼0.21 GeV. We interpret this result as resulting from the g → ωπ decay. The differential cross section d σ d t is in agreement with the production of the g-meson through one-pion exchange.

FOUR PION RESONANCE CALLED RHO(1.71) BY AUTHORS. DECAY IS CONSISTENT WITH 100 PCT <RHO0 RHO-> MODE.
Results are presented concerning topological cross-sections and multiplicity distribution for a π−p experiment at 11.2 GeV/c. The statistics used are one-half of the total ones (106 bubble chamber pictures). Comparison with data at different energies and theoretical predictions are made, and satisfactory agreement is obtained.

The reaction π-p→pωπ- has been studied at 9.1 GeV/c, its total cross-section is σ=(123±22) μb. The pB− and the quasi-three-body channels contribute with cross-section of σ=(24±7) μb and σ=(94±23) μb, respectively. The main features of the quasi-three-body pωπ- channel, displayed by some techniques of data presentation, are satisfactorily described by a double-Regge-pole model. In this model pomeron-meson and meson-meson exchanges are taken into account. An OPE modelà la Veneziano predicts a total cross-section too high and reproduces very poorly the observed features.
BREIT-WIGNER PLUS BACKGROUND FITS FOR B(1235)- AND OMEGA MESONS.
The spin rotation parameter R has been measured for elastic π − p scattering at 40 GeV/ c , at four momentum transfers t ranging from −0.19 to −0.52 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The average value within this interval is R π − p = -0.200± 0.023. The resulting constraints on the πN scattering amplitudes are discussed. The experiments also yields an average value for K − p scattering, R K − p scattering, R K − p = -0.16±0.16.
Differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of negative pi mesons on protons (π−−p→π−−p) were measured at the Berkeley Bevatron at five laboratory kinetic energies of the pion between 500 and 1000 MeV. The results were least-squares fitted with a power series in the cosine of the center-of-mass scattering angle, and total elastic cross sections for π−−p→π−−p were obtained by integrating under the fitted curves. The coefficients of the cosine series are shown plotted versus the incident pion laboratory kinetic energy. These curves display as a striking feature a large value of the coefficient of cos5θ* peaking in the vicinity of the 900-MeV resonance. This implies that a superposition of F52 and D52 partial waves is prominent in the scattering at this energy, since the coefficients for terms above cos5θ* are negligible. One possible explanation is that the F52 enhancement comes from an elastic resonance in the isotopic spin T=12 state, consistent with Regge-pole formalism, and the D52 partial-wave state may be enhanced by inelastic processes. At 600 MeV the values of the coefficients do not seem to demand the prominence of any single partial-wave state, although the results are compatible with an enhancement in the J=32 amplitude. A table listing quantum numbers plausibly associated with the various peaks and "shoulders" seen in the π±−p total cross-section curves is presented.

The NA24 experiment at CERN investigated inclusive γγ, π0π0, and γπ0 final states in the mass range between 4 and 9 GeV/c2 produced in π−p, π+p, and pp reactions at a c.m.-system energy s=23.7 GeV. The π0π0 cross sections agree well with expectations of the quark-parton model. For γπ0 production in π−p and pp reactions, a clear signal is observed and cross sections are shown. The production of γγ events was observed with a statistical significance of 2.9σ in π−p reactions. The cross section is in agreement with a higher-order QCD prediction.

Measurements of the polarization parameters and angular distributions are reported for π±p elastic scattering at 100 GeV/c and for pp elastic scattering at 100- and 300-GeV/c incident momentum. Interactions of 683-MeV/c negative pions with protons were investigated using the BNL 14-in. hydrogen bubble chamber in a 17-kG field. Two thousand elastic scatterings were analyzed, yielding a cross section of 18.9±1.0 mb. No evidence for powers of cosθ higher than the second was observed in the elastic angular distribution. The angular distribution obtained was dσdω=(0.384±0.026)+(1.70±0.06)cosθ+(3.36±0.11)cos2θ mb/sr. The single-pion production reactions π−+p→π−+π0+p and π−+p→π−+π++n were studied in detail. A total of 441 π0 productions and 833 π+ productions were analyzed giving cross sections of 3.99±0.50 and 7.50±0.80 mb, respectively. The differential distributions for these inelastic processes are presented and compared with the predictions of the model of Olsson and Yodh. The distribution of events on the Dalitz plots for π0 production is accounted for by the model. However, for the π+ reaction, the model (so far developed) does not describe adequately the distribution of events on the Dalitz plot. In particular, the model fails to account for the enhancement at high (π+π−) effective masses in ππ mass distribution. The center-of-mass angular distributions for π0 and π+ production reactions are presented and compared with the model.

The KS0KS0π0 system has been studied in the exclusive reaction π−p→KS0KS0π0n at 21.4 GeV/c. Evidence for the production of the f1(1285) and the η(1460) is presented. The η(1460) is produced away from minimum momentum transfer in the presence of nonresonant K*K (S-wave) production and phase-space background. The observed mass, width, and decay properties of the η(1460) are consistent with those attributed to the ι(1460) observed in radiative Jψ decay.

We present the results of a search for charm F mesons in 360 GeV/ c π − p interactions. Several methods have been used; all yield no evidence for the F and are interpreted as 90% confidence level cross section upper limits.

We have performed a high-statistics experiment on the reaction π−p→K+K¯0π−n at 8.0 GeV/c. A Dalitz-plot analysis of the K+K¯0π− system finds that the D(1285) is a JPG=1++ state coupling predominantly to a δπ decay channel, while the E(1420) peak consists mostly of a JPG=0−+ wave with a substantial δπ decay mode. There is little evidence of a 1++ resonance at the E mass.
