The differential cross section and polarization in p−d elastic scattering have been measured at an incident laboratory momentum of 0.99 GeVc (kinetic energy 425 MeV) over most of the angular range. Elastic p−d scattering events from a CD2 target were selected by angular correlation, coplanarity, and time of flight. A significant feature of the results is the large positive polarization at backward scattering angles.

The polarization parameter in π±p elastic scattering has been measured at several momenta in the range 2.50-5.15 GeV/c pion laboratory momentum and covering the range in t approximately from -0.2 to -2.0(GeV/c)2. The data show positive polarization for π±p scattering, having a dip near t=−0.6 (GeV/c)2 and becoming relatively large at greater values of −t. The results for π+ and π− scattering are approximately equal in magnitude but of opposite sign. The data have been analyzed to separate the components, which are symmetric and antisymmetric with respect to pion charge, and to show both the t and s dependence of each part.

The polarization parameter in π + p backward elastic scattering at 6 GeV/ c incident pion momentum has been measured using a butanol polarized proton target, a high intensity pion beam, and a scintillation hodoscope detection system. Details of the apparatus and data analysis are presented here, together with the final results.

Inclusive hadron production in muon-proton inelastic scattering has been measured for q2>0.5 (GeV/c)2 and 10<ν<135 GeV. The results are presented in the form of the transverse momentum distribution of charged hadrons and the hadron invariant structure function F(x′). Results are given for different regions of q2 and s.

This paper reports measurements of the hadrons produced in the inelastic scattering of 147-GeV muons by protons and deuterons in an experiment carried out at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. Both the scattered muon and the hadrons were measured in a large spectrometer. Properties of the hadron spectra are presented for proton, deuteron, and neutron targets and compared with theoretical models and with hadron spectra from related processes. Emphasis is placed on the quark-parton model and the data are found to be in substantial agreement with it. The average transverse momentum of the hadrons with respect to the virtual photon direction shows no dependence on the muon scattering variables. The data display "jet behavior" of the inclusive hadrons comparable to that found in e+e− annihilations.

The production of Ks0, Λ0, and Λ¯0 has been measured in deep-inelastic muon scattering at 225 GeV; decays into two charged hadrons were detected. Momentum distributions are compared to the inclusive charged-hadron distributions measured in the same experiment. The range of virtual-photon parameters covered is 0.4<Q2<50 GeV2 and 20<ν<210 GeV.

Measurements of the polarization in pp elastic scattering have been made at 5.15 GeV/c over the range −t=0.2 to 1.8 (GeV/c)2. The data are compared with a Regge-pole model, and with the diffraction model of Durand and Lipes in which the absorptive part of the pp interaction is derived from the electromagnetic form factor of the proton. The latter model reproduces the t dependence of the experimental data in a qualitative way.

Results on kaon, pion, and proton production in muon-proton scattering are presented for 1<Q2<80 GeV2 with an average Bjorken x of 0.033. The measured particle fractions for z>0.2(z=Phadν) are fπ=0.764±0.028, fK=0.187±0.042, and fp=0.049±0.013. The K±π± ratios as a function of z and pT2 are presented: The ratios increase with z, and with pT2 for z<0.3.

In an experiment at the Argonne Zero-Gradient Synchrotron we have measured values of the polarization parameter P(t) in the elastic scattering of negative pions, positive pions, positive kaons, and protons on protons at several incident laboratory momenta from 2.50 to 5.15 GeVc, and for values of the momentum transfer variable −t from 0.2 to 2.0 (GeVc)2. The final results from p−p elastic scattering presented here extend our knowledge of the polarization to much larger values of −t than the results of previous measurements. Outstanding features revealed by these polarization data include (1) the development of a dip at about −t=0.7 (GeVc)2, with (2) a substantial secondary peak at larger values of −t and (3) the gradual diminution of the maximum polarization with increasing energy. It is possible to fit the t dependence of the experimental results with a simple model. The energy dependence of the polarized cross sections is also discussed.

Measurements have been made of the inclusive scattering of 96, 147, and 219 GeV muons from hydrogen, and of 147 GeV muons from deuterium. Results are presented for the nucleon structure function F2(x,Q2) [≡νW2(x,Q2)] for 10<ν<200 GeV and 0.2<Q2<80 GeV2. The value of F2 rises with Q2 at small x, and falls with Q2 at large x, in agreement with the ideas of quantum chromodynamics. An average value of the ratio σLσT≡R=0.52±0.35 has been obtained for the region 0.003<x<0.10 and 0.4<Q2<30 GeV2. The values of F2 from this experiment have been combined with those from other charged-lepton scattering experiments to determine moments of the structure functions. The variation with Q2 of these moments is used to derive values for Λ, taking into account corrections up to second order in αs. The fit to the data is very good.
