We have measured the asymmetry of the cross section for γp→π+n from a polarized target at 5 and 16 GeV. The range of four-momentum transfer was 0.02<~−t<~1.0 GeV2. The π+ mesons were produced in a polarized butanol target and detected with the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center 20−GeVc spectrometer. A sizable asymmetry was found at both 5 and 16 GeV, a typical value being -0.6 near −t=0.3 GeV2. A small amount of data on the asymmetry of other photoproduction processes was also obtained.

Inspire Record 99058 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.27810

The polarization parameter in pp elastic scattering was measured at 6 GeV/ c with fine t resolution for 0.02 < − t < 0.5 GeV 2 using a polarized proton beam with Effective Mass Spectrometer at the Zero Gradient Synchrotron. The polarization rises like √− t in the interval 0.02 < − t < 0.1 GeV 2 , No statistical significant structure was found in this region of momentum transfer.

Polarization Parameter for Nucleon-Nucleon Elastic Scattering at 11.8-GeV/c

Inspire Record 122176 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.24427

Data are presented on the polarization parameter in pp and pn elastic scattering at 11.8 GeV/c for four-momentum transfers −t=0.15 to 0.9 GeV2. In contrast to lower energies where the pn polarization is positive, it is slightly negative at 11.8 GeV/c; averaging the data from −t=0.18 to 0.5 GeV2 we find P(pn)=(−0.9±0.5)%, to be compared with P(pp)=(5.6±0.8)%. These data, combined with our previous data at lower energies, show that the I=0 single-flip exchange amplitude has an anomalously rapid energy dependence.

Measurement of the Proton-Neutron Elastic Scattering Polarization from 2-GeV/c to 6-GeV/c

Left-right asymmetries from a deuterium target in a polarized-proton beam were observed with the Argonne National Laboratory effective-mass spectrometer. Results were obtained for both pp and pn elastic scattering from −t=0.15 to 1.0 GeV2 at 2, 3, 4, and 6 GeV/c. For −t≲0.6 GeV2 the pn polarization was found to have the same sign as for pp, but with faster energy dependence, the ratio P(pn)P(pp) at −t=0.3 GeV2 falling from 0.78±0.02 at 2 GeV/c to 0.22±0.03 at 6 GeV/c.

Study of the Reaction $p p$ (Polarized) $\to p \pi^+ n$ With Polarized Beam From 3-{GeV}/$c$ to 12-{GeV}/$c$

We present density-matrix elements and single-spin correlations for the reaction p↑p→pπ+n at 3, 4, 6, and 11.75 GeV/c, using both longitudinal and transverse beam polarizations. For small momentum transfers, the spin correlations are mainly due to off-shell π+p elastic scattering, while for larger t there are large polarization effects associated with the production dynamics for p↑p→Δ++n. Comparison of longitudinal and transverse polarization correlations suggests that the Δ++-production spin effects are due mainly to unnatural-parity exchanges. We present a model-dependent amplitude analysis, and extract the energy dependence of the natural- and unnatural-parity-exchange contributions.

SPIN DEPENDENT PARAMETERS P (NOOO), D (NONO), K (NOON), D (SOSO), D (SOKO), M (SOSN), AND M (SOKN) IN P P ELASTIC SCATTERING AT 579-MEV

Inspire Record 195612 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.23816

The polarization parameter Pn000, the two-spin parameters Dn0n0, Kn00n, Ds0s0, and Ds0k0, and the three-spin parameters Ms0sn and Ms0kn have been measured for pp elastic scattering at 579 MeV between 34° and 118° center-of-mass scattering angle. The experiment was performed at SIN using a polarized proton beam, a polarized butanol target, and a polarimeter for the measurement of the polarization of the scattered proton. These data form the basis for a complete experimental determination of the scattering amplitudes.

Measurement of vector-tensor spin-transfer observables for the reaction H(p(pol.),d(pol.))pi+ between 580-MeV and 1300-MeV.

The three polarization tensor components of the deuteron produced in the H( p , d )π + reaction have been measured for the first time. The experiment was performed using a vertically polarized proton beam produced by the SATURNE accelerator. The deuteron polarization was measured with the POLDER polarimeter. The three polarizing powers t 20 00 , t 21 00 and t 22 00 and the three spin-transfer observables t 20 11 , t 22 11 and t 22 11 have been extracted at a proton kinetic energy of 580 MeV over a wide angular range and at two fixed center-of-mass angles, 132° and 151°, between 800 and 1300 MeV. The six observables, calculated in the C.M. helicity frame, have been compared with predictions of the most refined partial-wave analyses and also with the predictions of a theoretical coupled-channel model which includes the NN-NΔ transition. The comparison between the data and the theory/partial-wave analyses shows some discrepancies which get worse with increasing proton energy. Adding these data to the world database should improve significantly future partial-wave analyses. The A y 0 analyzing power has also been measured over the same kinematical range. The partial-wave analysis predictions are in good agreement with this observable.
