Forward angle pi+- p elastic scattering differential cross-sections at T(pi) = 87-MeV to 139-MeV

Inspire Record 400646 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.25894

Absolute π±p elastic scattering differential cross sections have been measured at five incident pion energies between 87 and 139 MeV. An active target of scintillator material (CH1.1) was used to detect recoil protons in coincidence with scattered pions. Pions were detected at forward angles between 27 and 98°c.m. where the low-energy recoil protons stop in the target. The cross sections, typically 5–10% lower than phase shift predictions for π+p and 10–20% lower for the π−p cross sections, are consistent with earlier measurements by this group.

Proton-Proton Elastic Scattering Involving Large Momentum Transfers

Cocconi, G. ; Cocconi, V.T. ; Krisch, A.D. ; et al.
Phys.Rev. 138 (1965) B165-B172, 1965.
Inspire Record 49634 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.26688

Twenty-nine proton-proton differential elastic cross sections for lab momenta p0 from 11 to 31.8 BeV/c, at four-momentum transfers squared, −t, from 2.3 to 24.4 (BeV/c)2, have been measured at the Brookhaven alternating gradient synchrotron. The circulating proton beam impinged upon a thin CH2 internal target. Both scattered protons from p−p elastic events were detected by scintillation-counter telescopes which were placed downstream from deflection magnets set at the appropriate angles to the incident beam. The angular correlation of the protons, their momenta, and the coplanarity of the events were determined by the detection system. The results show that at high momentum transfers the differential cross section, dσdt, depends strongly upon the energy; for −t=10 (BeV/c)2, the value of dσdt at p0=30 BeV/c is smaller by a factor∼1000 than at p0=10 BeV/c. At all energies, dσdt falls rapidly with increasing |t| for scattering angles up to about 65° (c.m.), while in the range from 65 to 90° the cross section falls only by a factor of about 2. The smallest cross section measured was 9×10−37 cm2 sr−1 (c.m.), at p0=31.8 BeV/c and −t=20.4 (BeV/c)2; this is about 3×10−12 of the zero-degree cross section at the same energy.

Some Two-Body Final States of K-p Interactions at 1.33 GeVc

Trower, W.P. ; Ficenec, J.R. ; Hulsizer, R.I. ; et al.
Phys.Rev. 170 (1968) 1207-1222, 1968.
Inspire Record 944939 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.26507

We studied 21 187 two-prong, two-prong-with-kink, and zero-prong-V events at incident kaon momentum of 1.33 GeVc using the 72-in. hydrogen bubble chamber at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory and two scanning and measuring projectors in Urbana. We determined the total and partial cross sections for all contributing reactions. For the two-body final states, some production and polarization angular distributions were measured. The angular distributions are discussed in terms of exchanges in the kinematical channels s, t, and u assuming the simplest Feynman graphs. Elastic scattering is analyzed as a diffraction process.

The elastic scattering of 3.55 GeV/ c π + and π − mesons by protons was measured at centre-of-mass angles between 165° and 177°. The angular distributions for 864 events show a steeply rising backward peak for π + p, while the shape is less clear for π − p.

The π + p cross section for elastic scattering from hydrogen was measured at seven incident energies ranging from 20.8 to 95.9 MeV for an angular range from 60° to 145°. The experimental set-up is discussed in detail as well as the method used for data analysis. A table of results and a set of phase shifts are provided.

Search for Narrow Baryons in $\pi^- p$ Elastic Scattering at Large Angles

Inspire Record 153784 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.27177

Hoping to find resonant structures in the momentum dependence of π − p elastic scattering we have measured the differential cross section for this reaction at c.m. angles near 90°. An intense pion beam (≈ 10 7 π /s) has been used, together with a high incident momentum resolution (d P / P ≈ 2 × 10 −4 ), to scan the region of laboratory momenta from 5.75 to 13.02 GeV/ c (c.m. energy from 3.42 to 5.03 GeV). The sensitivity attained by the experiment is such that signals would have been seen corresponding to the formation of non-strange baryon resonances having width larger than ≈ 0.1 MeV and elasticity larger than a few per cent. Within these limits no resonances were sighted.

pi--p Elastic Scattering at 1.44 Bev

An investigation of π−+p elastic scattering, made in a liquid propane bubble chamber, is reported. Identification of events is made on the basis of kinematics. The problem of contamination by pion scattering from protons bound in carbon is considered in some detail; it is shown that the latter requires a correction of only 4±2.5% of the total number of events. The angular distribution is presented. It shows a large diffraction peak at small angles and an approximately isotropic plateau over the backward hemisphere. The forward peak is fitted to a black-sphere diffraction pattern with a radius of (1.08±0.06)×10−13 cm. The total elastic cross section is found to be σe=10.1±0.80 mb.

Large Angle Elastic Scattering of Charged Pions on Protons at 20-{GeV}/c and 30-{GeV}/c Incident Momenta

Inspire Record 152838 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.27195

Elastic cross-section measurements are presented for π ± −p at 20 GeV/ c and π − −p at 30 GeV/ c incident momenta in the large angle region (50° to 90° in the c.m. system). The data are compared with published lower energy elastic cross sections. A test is made of the dimensional counting rules for π ± −p elastic scattering and some indication of a deviation from this rule is observed in the π − −p case. A comparison is also made with the predictions of the constituent interchange model. Although the broad features of the predictions are confirmed, there are some important discrepancies. Finally, the predictions of the model due to Preparata and Soffer are also compared with the new data.
