Results are presented from an experiment designed to make the first systematic study of the depolarization parameter in elastic proton-proton scattering at high energies. Measurements were made at 3.0 and 6.0 GeV/c at |t| values extending to 1.7 (GeV/c)2 at the higher momentum. A high-intensity unpolarized proton beam was incident on a polarized proton target and the polarization of the elastically scattered recoil protons was determined with a carbon analyzer. The results are discussed in the framework of optical and exchange models.

The polarization parameter has been measured for K − p elastic scattering at nine incident beam momenta between 0.955 and 1.272 GeV/ c covering the c.m. angular range −0.9 < cos θ ∗ < + 0.9 . Experimental results and coefficients of Legendre polynomial fits to the data are presented and compared with other measurements and a partial-wave analysis.

LEGENDRE POLYNOMIAL COEFFICIENTS FOR POLARIZATION DERIVED USING INTERPOLATED DIFFERENTIAL CROSS SECTION DATA OF B. CONFORTO ET AL., NP B105, 189 (1976).
We have measured the K − p elastic-scattering differential cross section at 3.59 GeV/ c for t < −0.1 (GeV/ c ) 2 . After all geometrical and kinematical cuts we have 11 734 elastic events. The forward diffraction peak has a slope of 7.57 ± 0.1 (GeV/ c ) −2 , and there is a marked dip-bump structure at t ∼ −1.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The elastic cross section is 4.4 ± 0.2 mb. There is no evidence for a backward peak.

EVENTS NORMALIZED TO A TOTAL CROSS SECTION OF 26.3 +- 0.3 MB.
Results are presented on elastic scattering of 10.1 GeV/ c K − mesons on protons, based on a sample of 16 261 kinematically-fitted bubble-chamber events. The differential cross section is given over the | t |- range of 0.06 to 2.5 GeV 2 and is fitted with the expressions a e bt , A e Bt + Ct 2 and ( P e Qt + Re St ) over various intervals of t . The results are compared with those of other experiments at nearby energies. Upper limits of | α | < 0.28 and σ B < 0.4 μ b (both at a 90% confidence level) are given for the ratio of real to imaginary part of the forward-scattering amplitude and the backward-elastic-scattering cross section, respectively.
