We present a study of J/ψ and ψ(2S) production in pp¯ collisions, at s=1.8TeV with the CDF detector at Fermilab. The J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed using their μ+μ− decay modes. We have measured the inclusive production cross section for both mesons as a function of their transverse momentum in the central region, |η|<0.6. We also measure the fraction of these events originating from b hadrons. We thus extract individual cross sections for J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons from b-quark decays and prompt production. We find a large excess (approximately a factor of 50) of direct ψ(2S) production compared with predictions from the color singlet model.

Inspire Record 922830 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.58958

A measurement of the differential cross section for the inclusive production of isolated prompt photons in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC. The measurement covers the pseudorapidity range |eta|<2.5 and the transverse energy range 25 < ET < 400 GeV, corresponding to the kinematic region 0.007 < xT < 0.114. Photon candidates are identified with two complementary methods, one based on photon conversions in the silicon tracker and the other on isolated energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter. The measured cross section is presented as a function of ET in four pseudorapidity regions. The next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations are consistent with the measured cross section.

Inspire Record 890909 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.57943

A search for Z bosons in the mu^+mu^- decay channel has been performed in PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre of mass energy = 2.76 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, in a 7.2 inverse microbarn data sample. The number of opposite-sign muon pairs observed in the 60--120 GeV/c2 invariant mass range is 39, corresponding to a yield per unit of rapidity (y) and per minimum bias event of (33.8 ± 5.5 (stat) ± 4.4 (syst)) 10^{-8}, in the |y|<2.0 range. Rapidity, transverse momentum, and centrality dependencies are also measured. The results agree with next-to-leading order QCD calculations, scaled by the number of incoherent nucleon-nucleon collisions.

A search is presented for extra spatial dimensions, quantum black holes, and quark contact interactions in measurements of dijet angular distributions in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV. The data were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 2.6 inverse femtobarns. The distributions are found to be in agreement with predictions from perturbative quantum chromodynamics that include electroweak corrections. Limits for different contact interaction models are obtained in a benchmark model, valid to next-to-leading order in QCD, in which only left-handed quarks participate, quark contact interactions are excluded up to a scale of 11.5 or 14.7 TeV for destructive or constructive interference, respectively. The production of quantum black holes is excluded for masses below 7.8 or 5.3 TeV, depending on the model. The lower limits for the scales of virtual graviton exchange in the Arkani-Hamed--Dimopoulos--Dvali model of extra spatial dimensions are in the range 7.9-11.2 TeV, and are the most stringent set of limits available.

A search for supersymmetry is presented based on multijet events with large missing transverse momentum produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 13 TeV. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 inverse femtobarns, were collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2016. The analysis utilizes four-dimensional exclusive search regions defined in terms of the number of jets, the number of tagged bottom quark jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta, and the magnitude of the vector sum of jet transverse momenta. No evidence for a significant excess of events is observed relative to the expectation from the standard model. Limits on the cross sections for the pair production of gluinos and squarks are derived in the context of simplified models. Assuming the lightest supersymmetric particle to be a weakly interacting neutralino, 95% confidence level lower limits on the gluino mass as large as 1800 to 1960 GeV are derived, and on the squark mass as large as 960 to 1390 GeV, depending on the production and decay scenario.

A search for a heavy resonance decaying into a top quark and antiquark ($\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$) pair is performed using proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV. The search uses the data set collected with the CMS detector in 2016, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The analysis considers three exclusive final states and uses reconstruction techniques that are optimized for top quarks with high Lorentz boosts, which requires the use of nonisolated leptons and jet substructure techniques. No significant excess of events relative to the expected yield from standard model processes is observed. Upper limits on the production cross section of heavy resonances decaying to a $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ pair are calculated. Limits are derived for a leptophobic topcolor Z' resonance with widths of 1, 10, and 30%, relative to the mass of the resonance, and exclude masses up to 3.80, 5.25, and 6.65 TeV, respectively. Kaluza-Klein excitations of the gluon in the Randall-Sundrum model are excluded up to 4.55 TeV. To date, these are the most stringent limits on $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ resonances.

Eur.Phys.J.C 80 (2020) 41, 2020.
Inspire Record 1753976 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.90950

A search for WW production from double-parton scattering processes using same-charge electron-muon and dimuon events is reported, based on proton-proton collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The analyzed data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 77.4 fb$^{-1}$, collected using the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016 and 2017. Multivariate classifiers are used to discriminate between the signal and the dominant background processes. A maximum likelihood fit is performed to extract the signal cross section. This leads to the first evidence for WW production via double-parton scattering, with a significance of 3.9 standard deviations. The measured inclusive cross section is 1.41 $\pm$ 0.28 (stat) $\pm$ 0.28 (syst) pb.

Study of J/$\psi$ meson production from jet fragmentation in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 8 TeV

Inspire Record 1757506 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.90639

A study of the production of prompt J/$\psi$ mesons contained in jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 8 TeV is presented. The analysis is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.1 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. For events with at least one observed jet, the angular separation between the J/$\psi$ meson and the jet is used to test whether the J/$\psi$ meson is part of the jet. The analysis shows that most prompt J/$\psi$ mesons with energy above 15 GeV and rapidity $|y|<$ 1 are contained in jets with pseudorapidity $|\eta_{\text{jet}}|$ $<$ 1. The differential distributions of the probability to have a J/$\psi$ meson contained in a jet as a function of jet energy for a fixed J/$\psi$ energy fraction are compared to a theoretical model using the fragmenting jet function approach. The data agree best with fragmenting jet function calculations that use a long-distance matrix element parameter set in which prompt J/$\psi$ mesons are predicted to be unpolarized. This technique demonstrates a new way to test predictions for prompt J/$\psi$ production using nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics.

JHEP 11 (2021) 111, 2021.
Inspire Record 1917152 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.102957

A measurement of the cross section of the associated production of a single top quark and a W boson in final states with a muon or electron and jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV is presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2016. A boosted decision tree is used to separate the tW signal from the dominant $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ background, whilst the subleading W+jets and multijet backgrounds are constrained using data-based estimates. This result is the first observation of the tW process in final states containing a muon or electron and jets, with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations. The cross section is determined to be 89 $\pm$ 4 (stat) $\pm$ 12 (syst) pb, consistent with the standard model.
